ill., ril. Il Cabinet of Natural Curiosities di Albertus Seba è uno dei più bei libri di storia naturale del XVIII secolo, nonché uno dei volumi più premiati di tutti i tempi. Sebbene fosse abitudine degli scienziati del tempo raccogliere esemplari naturali, Albertus Seba (1665-1736) ci metteva una passione senza precedenti. La sua fantastica collezione di animali, piante e insetti da tutto il mondo divenne famosa a livello internazionale già durante la sua vita. Nel 1731, dopo anni di collezionismo, Seba decise di pubblicare un libro che raffigurasse ogni suo pezzo, commissionandone le illustrazioni da raccogliere in un catalogo in quattro volumi - dalle piante esotiche a serpenti, rane e coccodrilli, dalle conchiglie ai coralli, dagli uccelli alle farfalle, passando per creature fantastiche quali l'idra e il drago, senza tralasciare alcune creature oggi estinte.

1781-1784 Four volumes (complete). 502, 482, [2], iv, 496, 524, [4] p., 49 figures, 4 folded engraved plates, contemporary full marbled calf, spines richly gilt with five raised bands and red and black labels, edges red. Marbled endpapers. Volume two with upper corned of front cover with water damage (loss of leather) and in a lesser degree the back cover as well. Outer corner of volume four damaged with some loss. Volume two with water damage / waterstained to 30 pages in upper corner and becoming gradually less, the last 40 pages also with waterstain in upper corner. Volume four with waterstain in upper corner of first 70 or so pages. The plates are clean, and the spines are nice with bold lettering. In case of doubt please ask me for photographs of the work. Despite its defects a rare complete set!

It was initially based in Kew, but in 1930 moved ito the Royal Botanic Gardens, and was renamed the Imperial Mycological Institute. In 1948, it changed its name to the Commonwealth Mycological Institute and in 1986 to the International Mycological Institute. In 1998 it was assimilated by CAB International. Their publications ''Mycological Papers'' began with no. 1, published in 1925; ceased with no. 176, published in 2001.
