Ouvrage d'histologie végétale, traduit de l'allemand par J. Godrin. Eduard Strasburger (1844-1912), né à Varsovie, étudia la botanique à l'Université de Bonn sous la direction d'Hermann Schacht et y acquit ses compétences en microscopie. À Iéna, il devint l'élève de Nathanael Pringsheim et de Heackel ; sous l'influence de ce dernier, il s'enthousiasma pour la théorie de l'évolution de Darwin. Strasburger est surtout connu pour avoir éclaircit le phénomène de la division cellulaire. "In 1884, from his observations of plants, Strasburger independently conclued (...) that the nucleu was responsible for heredity, and that it contained within the filaments the substance that was divised in halves between the daughter cells and bore the characters of the parents and earlier ancestor" (DSB).
