Hall, M. D. and published 1802 by same publisher. The second volume is sometimes found separately but is clearly part of the set. The plates including equipment, machinery, garden plans, layouts of greenhouses, hothouses, ice-house, buildings, plants, etc. A thorough reference work for the gardener and farmer of the time.

The Planter's Guide Or A Practical Essay on the Best Method of Giving Immediate Effect to Wood by the Removal of Large Trees and Underwood; Being an Attempt to Place the Art and that of Geneneral Arboriculture on Fixed and Phytological Principles
Edinburgh and London: John Murray 1828. Second edition greatly improved and enlarged. Illustrated with six engraved plates octavo pp xxxviii 527 sadly the plates are heavily foxed which has also affected the neighbouring page howver the remainder of the text is remarkably clean and very tight and sound; bound in a contemporary half calf rubbed rebacked sympathetically with a new calf spine. lightly tipped-in at the first page is a small advertisement leaf warning of 'sundry ignorant and uneducated persons' attempting to pass themselves off as having been trained by Henry Steuart - this seems to be scarce. Steuart 1759 - 1836 was a Scottish landowner agricultural improver soldier and classical scholar. Owing to bad health Steuart abandoned most of his literary work and experiments in arboriculture became the chief interest of his life. In September 1823 a deputation from the Highland and Agricultural Society which included Sir Walter Scott and Lords Belhaven and Corehouse visited Allanton and reported on the improvements effected there by Steuart's system of transplanting large trees. Though he had had to contend with an unfavourable soil and an exposed position he attained at no extraordinary expense the power so long desired of anticipating the slow progress of vegetation and accomplishing within two or three seasons those desirable changes in the face of nature which he who plants in early youth can in ordinary cases only hope to witness in advanced life. From this time Steuart frequently corresponded with Sir Walter who imitated several of Steuart's experiments at Abbotsford. When in 1828 Steuart published this work Scott reviewed it enthusiastically in the Quarterly March. When Scott visited Allanton in January 1829 in company with Lockhart he noted in his journal: Sir Henry is a sad coxcomb and lifted beyond the solid earth by the effect of his book's success. But the book well deserves it. The book was also favourably reviewed by Southwood Smith in the Westminster Review by Professor Wilson Christopher North in Blackwood's Magazine April 1828 and in the Edinburgh Review March 1829. It had a large circulation in America. In his preface to the second edition Steuart claims to have made the first attempt to apply the principles of physiology to practical arboriculture and to have created the new science of phytology. This copy was used in the printing office of J. Horace McFarland (1859-1948). McFarland was one of the first Americans to sound the call for environmental and scenic protection. In 1878, at age nineteen, McFarland opened his printing business and began to publish gardening and seed catalogs. Realizing that woodcuts did not adequately represent the plants, he started to explore the use of photography. By 1894, he was experimenting with color photography and his company had become America's premier publisher of gardening catalogs, with what may have been the first color photographs produced in the US. The success of his publishing business provided McFarland with wealth and security, and freed him to engage extensively in the philanthropy and civic activism he loved. He was recognized as a master gardener whose books and photographs on roses, trees and other subjects were famous across the United States. He wrote more than a dozen books on roses and made the American Rose Society a world-renowned institution. As president, he established a method of rose identification and registration that is still in use today. He was widely known as "Mr. Rose" and was a founder and president of the American Rose Society, which had an international impact on the propagation of roses. His home and garden in the Bellevue Park section of Harrisburg was an internationally famous testing ground for hundreds of new plant species. It contained 5,000 plants including varieties of roses. The binding shows rubbing bumping and wear but is quite sound. Rebacked in modern red leather with a largely plain spine bearing the title and a gilt roll at the headcap and foot and a small central device in the middle of the spine. Corners rebuilt with leather. All edges gilt. Modern faux marbled paper endpapers. Text is a bit toned and there is foxing on the plates. Most if not all of the plates have their tissue guards. Original early cloth binding, rebacked preserving the original backstrip. Spine label. Binding slightly worn at extremities and a few small stains on front board. Hardbound. Jacob George Strutt (17841867) painter and etcher, studied in London, and was a contributor to the Royal Academy and British Institution at intervals between 1819 and 1858. For a few years he practiced portrait-painting, but from 1824 to 1831 exhibited studies of forest scenery, and he is now best known by two sets of etchings which he published at this period `Sylva Britannica, or portraits of Forest Trees distinguished for their Antiquity' (1822; reissued, as here, in 1838), and `Delicia Sylvarum, or grand and romantic Forest Scenery in England and Scotland' (1828). About 1831 Strutt went abroad, and, after residing for a time at Lausanne, settled in Rome. In 1851 he returned to England, but was not active after 1858. London: James Ridgway 1821. Octavo pp ii 528 slight age-toning but otherwise surprisingly clean internally bound in a recent brown quarter calf and cloth very slightly rubbed. Later editions of the book were published under the title 'A Hothouse and Greenhouse Manual Or Botanical Cultivator' but this first edition is very scarce. Sweet was a prominent botanist and gardener of his day. He published both expensive colour plate works and also practical manuals such as this. Cairo University Press 1954 - 1969. Four volumes. The first three volumes are duplicates from East Malling Research Station librray the only marking being a stamp on the half-title and shelf numbers on the spines very clean internally stoutly bound in a good red quarter leather and cloth binding. Volume Four is smartly bound in brown cloth. Overall quite an attractive set. The second volume has an inscriptin from the authors and was originally given the othe botanist F.W. Andrews. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. The Flora not unexpectedly is an unusual work. It is a labour of love clearly carried out unhurriedly in the tradition of those great botanical scholars Tackholm would emulate. It has been hailed as a model of scholarship and completeness. One special feature is the detailed treatment of the extensive ancient Egyptian tomb flora; another is the attention paid throughout the volumes to agriculturally important plants and economic botany. Also the enormous bibliographies which provide access to the ancient and modern Arabic literature are gems" - extracted from Abraham D. Krikorian's obituary in "Nature". First Edition.
