Dicibile e indicibile in meccanica quantistica
br. Dall'inizio degli anni Cinquanta fino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1990, Bell ha dedicato gran parte dei suoi studi - oggi considerati fra i più decisivi del secolo scorso - ai fondamenti della meccanica quantistica. Nel 1987 la quasi totalità dei suoi lavori di contenuto fondazionale è stata raccolta in questo libro, divenuto ormai una pietra miliare nel campo. Bell ha infatti riaperto il problema che soggiace a tutti gli altri: quale realtà possiamo attribuire ai mattoni microscopici che costituiscono la materia? Un problema che si pose per la prima volta con urgenza nei primi due decenni del Novecento, allorché i fisici furono costretti dai fatti sperimentali a constatare che alla materia microscopica non si poteva attribuire uno specifico "dove" e che la logica a essa applicabile cozzava violentemente con il senso comune. A questo stato di cose reagì Einstein, che insieme a Podolsky e Rosen tradusse lo strano comportamento previsto per le particelle microscopiche in un apparente paradosso insito nella teoria: il paradosso detto EPR dalle iniziali dei loro nomi. Trent'anni dopo Bell rianalizzò tutta la situazione EPR, e sintetizzò nell'ormai famosa "disuguaglianza di Bell" un criterio in grado - in linea di principio - di dirimere sperimentalmente il paradosso. Alain Aspect, prima di altri, portò avanti l'esperimento, avvalorando una novità sconvolgente: particelle opportunamente preparate si comportano come se fossero una cosa sola anche quando sono separate da distanze arbitrariamente grandi.

Tutti gli studiosi, che si sono interessati di pittura altomedievale nel corso delle loro ricerche, si sono imbattuti in questo volume, Hans Belting, Studien zur beneventanischen Malerei, del quale hanno affrontato la lettura per tanti versi ostica ma indirizzandola alle parti più direttamente in relazione con la loro ricerca. Risulta infatti ardua la lettura nella sua interezza di questo testo, ampio e articolato, pieno di rimandi e confronti con il mondo romano, con quello bizantino, dell'Italia del nord oramai sotto i Carolingi e dei paesi d'Oltralpe, di passi difficili da comprendere in modo chiaro e da rendere in lingua italiana in maniera fluente e discorsiva; si tratta di un testo che richiede da parte del lettore una profonda conoscenza delle tematiche affrontate dall'autore e di una lingua che per molti versi, rispetto all'anno di edizione del volume, ha subìto diverse trasformazioni. Nel corso della traduzione sono state prese alcune decisioni editoriali che riguardano il testo tedesco. Per prima cosa si è cercato di rimanere più fedeli possibile a questo senza operare grandi cambiamenti; lì dove però la traduzione risultava critica, poco comprensibile e il pensiero non chiaro, questa è stata in parte modificata, chiedendo anche allo stesso autore un aiuto per interpretare al meglio il suo scritto. Al prof. Hans Belting, è stata mandata una copia della traduzione per avere il suo beneplacito sull'operazione; anche la casa editrice Franz Steiner ha collaborato dando la sua autorizzazione alla edizione.

Dopo tre anni dalla pubblicazione in italiano del volume di Hans Belting, "Studien zur beneventanischen Malerei", Wiesbaden 1968, esce il relativo 'Aggiornamento' scientifico che era stato annunciato in quella occasione. Con questo testo si vuole offrire agli studiosi del campo una visione più completa possibile di quanto fino a oggi noto, tenendo anche conto delle diverse campagne di indagini archeologiche e di restauro che hanno interessato in anni recenti molti dei siti e dei cicli pittorici che all'epoca dello scritto di Belting non erano conosciuti o versavano in non buone condizioni conservative. Il criterio cronologico e stilistico che ha guidato le nostre ricerche, la selezione dei monumenti e dei singoli casi di studio sono gli stessi scelti da Belting nel 1968, proprio in virtù della volontà di rimanere fedeli all'impianto pensato dallo studioso tedesco per il progetto originario. Per tale ragione in alcuni contesti abbiamo tenuto conto anche delle proiezioni nei secoli seguenti dei caratteri tipici della pittura 'beneventana' altomedievale.
