Copy Letters dated 16 March Elvas and 25 May 1812 Fuente Guinaldo. Probable draft letter: 'Abranles July 4. 1809'. Other item 6 May 1809. Four interesting Peninsular War items from a collection of Beresford material. In 1813 the Duke of Wellington described Beresford as ‘the ablest man I have yet seen in the army’. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The four items are in good condition lightly aged and worn but see descriptions of Items One and Three and folded for postage. ONE: Apparent Autograph Draft of Letter. ‘Abranles July 4. 1809’. 2pp 4to. On laid Whatman paper. Reverse somewhat grubby with glue stains from display in an album at foot of reverse of leaf. Written in a hurried hand similar to other examples consulted for example in ‘d’ shapes ampersand use of long s and spelling ‘untill’ and with one emendation supporting the idea that the item is a draft and not a copy ‘he does not intend further’ is altered to ‘he does not intend drawing further upon me’ as does the fact that the text ends abruptly mid-page. Whether in his hand or not clearly written by Beresford during the build up to the Battle of Talavera. Reads: ‘Sir / You will be pleased to remain here with Mr Posleton Clerk for the purpose of paying the Checks which the Commissary General or any Person authorised by him may draw upon me - which you will pay from the money I shall leave in your hands & when you can ascertain from the Commissary General that he does not intend drawing further upon me I wish you to follow me as quickly as possible by the enclosed route - I have already made a requisition from Mr Asst. Comy Ogilvie in charge of the Car & Mule department for twenty-seven ox or mule cars but I understand from him that there are none of either description at present. You will therefore request the requisition in writing for whatever number you may want to bring forward the Military Chest untill you receive them - you will be guided in your departure from here by the Commissary Generals departure to whom you will apply on this Head. / I wish you to assist Mr Asst. in procuring the means of following me as expeditiously as he can - / I shall leave under your charge in the Military Chest ends here halfway down the second page’. I herewith have the Honor to return the Papers alluded to & to state that I have repeatedly represented to the Governors of this Kingdom the inutility & inefficiency of the Arsenal at Oporto that both on account of its being so far removed from Inspection & the great expense attending its Establishment it has ever been my opinion that it had better be altogether abolished & the whole centred in that at Lisbon which would be easier arranged & prove of more Utility’. THREE: Copy letter. ‘Fuente Guinaldo / 25th. May 1812’. Addressed as Item Two and ‘signed’ ‘Signed W. L. Beresford’. 2pp 8vo. Reverse of leaf with what appears to be light tea staining. Dalle lettere che arrivano dal Reggimento gli abitanti di Torino apprendono le vicende della campagna di Russia, dalla battaglia di Borodino alla presa di Mosca e al suo incendio, alla ritirata disastrosa nella fame e nel terribile gelo che falcidiano le truppe, e infine al terribile massacro della Beresina. Una campagna disgraziata che segnerà il declino della stella dell'Imperatore. Se la complessità degli intrecci richiama Dumas, l'impronta maggiore è però quella del romanzo storico nazionale nella tradizione di Walter Scott, o, più avanti negli anni, di Fernandez y Gonzalez per la Spagna o di Henryk Sienkiewicz per la Polonia. Richard Feynman l'aveva ritenuto "impossibile". Poi un giorno tre ricercatori di Bologna lo hanno realizzato, permettendoci di vedere con i nostri occhi il mistero fondamentale che sta al cuore della meccanica quantistica. Questo libro è il racconto della loro straordinaria avventura scientifica. Nel 1927 Albert Einstein propose un "esperimento mentale" per illustrare uno degli aspetti più sorprendenti della fisica quantistica: la proprietà degli elettroni, microscopici componenti della materia, di comportarsi sia come particelle (che possiamo immaginare come piccolissime palline da tennis) sia come onde (per esempio quelle che si propagano sulla superficie d'acqua di uno stagno). Nel 1963 Richard Feynman rielaborò in modo didattico questo esperimento per utilizzarlo come introduzione alla fisica quantistica, ma avvertì che sarebbe rimasto una pura astrazione, perché la sua realizzazione pratica sarebbe stata impossibile. Nel 1974 tre ricercatori dell'Università di Bologna e del CNR (Pier Giorgio Merli, Gian Franco Missiroli e Giulio Pozzi) riuscirono a realizzare "l'esperimento impossibile" di Feynman e lo documentarono in un film. Secondo un sondaggio del 2002 tra i lettori della rivista inglese Physics World, l'interferenza di elettroni singoli risulta essere "l'esperimento più bello" nella storia della fisica. È stato amico di Pier Giorgio Merli e allievo di quest'ultimo e di Franco Missiroli, i due ricercatori che nel 1974, assieme a Giulio Pozzi, realizzarono l'esperimento concettuale di Einstein. Often and incorrectly referred to as the 'Gallipoli Star' or 'Iron Half-Moon', my interest in the Harp Madalyasi (War Medal) , started a few years ago and I was immediately confronted with a myriad of unanswered questions due to the general lack of substantiated information on the subject. Luckily, I befriended other collectors interested in this award and eventually met the author in one of these online forums. First, let me say, that a printed reference on this subject was long overdue and I could not think of a better, more knowledgeable person, to bring this subject to light. The book briefly discusses the history of the Ottoman Empire and how it's military awards came into being, along with the European influence on design and purpose that led to the establishment of the War Medal. Various battles and campaigns are mentioned and examples of the various clasps often encountered on the War Medal ribbon are also shown. One of the book's highlights centers around the award regulations and amendments that applied, which are shown in great detail and reprinted with full translations. This is something many references overlook and often the collector has to rely on hearsay or other collector opinions, which often lead to confusion or erroneous statements as facts.
