The Cockettes were an LSD-inspired gay liberation theatrical group of hippie drag-queens founded by Hibiscus whose real name was George Harris. After a philosophical dispute with The Cockettes Hibiscus left the group and formed The Angels of Light. "Earthquake" was the Angels' first performance a revue featuring both Cockettes and Angels of Light members performing in a SF loft transformed into a performance space. The Cockettes were a group of LSD-inspired hippie drag-queens and some women from the Haight-Ashbury. They brought their unconventional lifestyle to the stage in the form of song-filled high-camp theatrical productions utilizing outrageous costumes and satirical content. Their performances drew a cult following in the early '70s when they had an inspirational effect on the Gay Liberation movement and they were darlings of the underground on both coasts. According to accounts of the period everyone from John and Yoko to Truman Capote and Andy Warhol attended the NY debut of "Tinsel Tarts." The piece was a spoof of 1930's Broadway and show folk first performed at the Palace Theatre and then the Anderson Theatre in NYC. Horizontal center crease else very good plus. The film was screened at the Palace Theatre but never released. The poster printed in black on green stock features a close-up photograph of Hibiscus passionately kissing "Angel Jack" who later went on to notoriety in the Studio 54 celebrity scene.
