‎The Historic Plant Collection of Istanbul's Saint Joseph High School.= Istanbul Saint Joseph Lisesi Tarihi Bitki Koleksiyonu. 2 volumes set.‎

‎New English Original bdg. In publisher's special slip-case. 4to. (35 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. Many color and b/w plates. 2 volumes set: (1119 p.). In 1905, three frères (priest-teachers) at Saint Joseph High School in Constantinople - and their pupils began to collect plants from both sides of the Bosphorus, particularly around Kadiköy. Their aim was to create a comprehensive herbarium (plant collection). Before drying the first specimens, the frères classified them according to the biologic and botanic knowledge of the day, and then recorded this information on specially-prepared labels. The frères pursued their endeavour, despite occasional interruptions, until the mid-1970s. The result was a 2,253-specimen herbarium from Istanbul-Kadiköy and its environs: the first and only extant such collection. Continuing the European tradition of taking inventory of the natural world, these three valuable teachers at Saint Joseph conducted scientific research on the flora of Istanbul, a magnificent city that is the common heritage of human civilization, and then preserved the fruit of their labour for all of humanity. This unique plant collection lay dormant in Saint Joseph High School until it was unearthed by Professor Mehmet Sakinç. Devoting long years to studying the collection's 2,253 specimens in light of new scientific developments, Professor Sakinç identified 1006 distinct species - all of which appear in this book under 436 genus and 87 families.‎

‎RIYAT GÜL.‎

‎Rare and endemic plants of the Datça-Bozburun peninsula.= Datça-Bozburun yarimadasinin nadir ve endemik bitkileri.‎

‎New English Paperback. Large 8vo. Bilingual in English and Turkish. 320 p., color ills. Rare and endemic plants of the Datça-Bozburun peninsula.= Datça-Bozburun yarimadasinin nadir ve endemik bitkileri. "I interested in plants long time ago. I believe that every nature-lover noticed and wandered about this colorful and variegated world. There were very few publicatons, particularly visual ones about Turkey's native plants. I thought that there must be a way to correctly identfy the similar-looking but differently named plants when I took a look at their photographs. After a long search I sadly found that there is only one source for this: A book of eleven volumes, which is full of scientific terms and has been written in English, named 'Flora of Turkey & east aegean islands'. I spent a long time to learn the botanical terms and to find the corresponding parts of the plants. As there were very few figures in that book, sometimes it took a few months to find only one term's meaning. When I deeply interested in this world I decided that my second goal must be sharing information and publishing a book about plant identification, basically scientific but targeting amateurs who I was sure were in a great number. As a beginning, I founded a group in Facebook, namely 'Flora' in 2009, and, subsequently a website, which contained information about our native plants both added by amateurs and the scientists. By this book I aimed to faciliate the identification for amateur plant-lovers as a first step. I added some brief information and pointed the distinguishing features of the plants by arrows, which are not found in other books about plants which have been published before and, pleased to see that they are increasing gradually in Turkey. The book consists of many plants which were collected and scientifically identified from almost every accessible parts of the peninsulas following about four years' research. About 800 plants have been identified but only 270 of them, which are rare and/or endemics have been included for convinience. The plants were sorted in a scientific manner, first the families and then the genus, as I think it is more scientific and correct. Differently colored but otherwise very similar plants are displayed side-by-side in the book. I wish this book will be useful for all nature-lovers, either the amateurs or the scientists".‎

There is a common understanding that "culture" and "nature" are two contradictory, even antagonistic, notions. This book plays an important role in disentangling this stereotype. The interaction of human beings with their environment plays a major role in the formation of culture. Original values of culture are in fact "natural" results of thes interaction. In turn, these values make pople "belong to the lands they live in". The oroginal cultural hertage of Anatolia is a remarkable reflection of this fact.‎
