‎Sachkundig führt die bekannte Gartenarchitektin und Pflanzenkennerin Penelope Hobhouse den Leser durch die Geschichte von Pflanzen, die aus anderen Ländern und Kontinenten eingeführt wurden sowie durch die Geschichte von Gartenstilen. Beide Aspekte sind ihrer Meinung nach eng miteinander verknüpft -- die neu eingeführten Pflanzen waren oftmals Meilensteine in der Entwicklung der Gartenstile. Schon im alten Ägypten wurden Pflanzen eingeführt, wie beispielsweise um 1550 v. Chr. der Granatapfel vom Kaspischen Meer. Die meisten unserer heimischen Obstgehölze wie Süß- und Sauerkirsche, Birne, Pfirsich und Pflaume, wurden von den Römern über die Alpen gebracht, zusammen mit Weinstöcken und Rosen. Die Liste ließe sich noch lange fortsetzen. Die Autorin fokussiert die Pflanzen in der Geschichte. Quellen für ihre Detektivarbeit sind unter anderem florale Motive in Gemälden und ägyptischen Grabmalereien, historische Bücher und Ausgrabungen. Eine Vielzahl hervorragender Abbildungen stellen das Gerüst des Buches dar. Allein das Durchblättern wird zur faszinierenden Reise durch die Epochen. Im Mittelalter wurde zwischen einem Lustgarten und zweckdienlichem Heilkräuter- und Gemüsegarten unterschieden. Im Europa der Renaissance wurden Zwiebelpflanzen wie die Tulpe für extrem hohe Summen gehandelt. Der englische Landschaftsgarten des 19. Jahrhunderts mit seiner eher naturnahen Konzeption wird im Unterschied zum strengen formalen französischen Stil zu Zeiten des Sonnenkönigs dargestellt. Ab dem 19. Jahrhundert orientierten sich die Gartenstile an bereits Dagewesenem. Viele berühmte Einzelgärten bzw. Parkanlagen werden detailliert beschrieben, ebenso wichtige Persönlichkeiten, die die Gartenkunst entscheidend prägten.
