Described by Wood as fundamental classics Lesson's monographs were the most comprehensive treatment of the Trocholidae until Gould began his monumental work 20 years later. Lesson's beautifully-illustrated work benefits from showing the subjects in their natural poses and being based on the author's personal observations of the birds in their natural habitat. Lesson was educated at the naval medical school at Rochefort. In 1822 he joined the company of the expeditionary ship 'Coquille' serving as medical officer and naturalist with P. Garnot under the natural historian J.-S.-C. Dumont d'Urville. The fieldwork that Lesson performed during the two-and-half-year circumnavigation was the foundation of both his fame as a natural historian and also provided much of the information and experience that he used when writing this and his other companion monographs. When "Cuvier and Latreille reported to the Academy of Sciences on the 'Coquille' expedition's zoological data and collections . Lesson and Garnot were praised for bringing back hitherto unknown species of birds reptiles fish mollusks and crustaceans. First editions and an ATTRACTIVE SET. The most extensive work on Hummingbirds until Gould's celebrated monograph of 1849-1861. Lesson served as a naturalist on board La Coquille during Duperrey's major French voyage of discovery of 1822-1825 and he was the first to describe a Bird of Paradise in flight when the voyage visited New Guinea in 1824. The voyage concentrated on the exploration of the Pacific and "called at Brazil the Falkland islands Concepcion Callao and Payta. The Pacific islands visited were the Tuamotu Archipelago Tahiti and the Society Islands Tonga Rotuma the Gilbert and Caroline Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago. Australia was visited twice and explorations made of New Zealand and of the Maoris were of particular significance. Vast quantities of ethnographic and scientific data were collected. Before returning to Marseilles Java Mauritius and Ascension were visited" Hill 517. Paris: Paulin 1842. Octavo 294pp including 2pp index; original publisher's wrappers spine strengthened. Very scarce: five Australian species are included in this zoological study. Most of the mammals discussed would have been encountered by Lesson during his three-year voyage under Duperrey and Dumont d'Urville. As naval surgeon on the Coquille Lesson visited Brazil the Falklands Tahiti New Holland New Zealand and New Guinea. In addition to his medical duties Lesson worked with Dumont d'Urville in collecting botanical and entomological specimens. His is the only complete account of the voyage. The expedition travelled extensively throughout the Pacific including Tahiti and the Solomons and stopped at Port Jackson before sailing to the Bay of Islands. Lesson was a careful and lively observer. He received little formal education and joined the navy as medical assistant; here his natural aptitude was recognised and formal training as a surgeon ensued. Lesson was fascinated by natural history from a young age and relished the many opportunities offered during the voyage of the Coquille. Despite its Australian interest this is not recorded by Ferguson. Presentation copy inscribed by Lesson to "Monsieur L'Amiral Leblanc hommage respectueux". Louis Francois Leblanc 1786-1857 had been promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1841 in the wake of a distinguished career including time as commander of the naval division station in Brazil and the South Sea. Original three quarter black morocco and calf spines gilt a.e.g. Minor shelf wear. Modern bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes. Some foxing occasional toning moderate dampstain in lower outer corner affecting the text but not the plates in the first 117 pages of first volume. Overall very good. This account by the naturalist aboard the COQUILLE during Duperrey's voyage in 1823-24 is the only separate narrative account of the voyage besides the same author's VOYAGE MEDICAL Paris 1829. Lesson provides detailed descriptions of the places and people visited including the Falklands New Guinea Tahiti other south Pacific islands New South Wales and New Zealand. His account includes nineteen fine hand-colored plates of natural history subjects including nine superb ornithological plates. "The 'Coquille' under the command of Captain Duperrey visited Sydney in 1824 remaining there from 17th January to 20th March. King Bungaree a very quaint figure who spoke a little English waited upon the Frenchman with his retainers. The aborigines are fully described and the excursions of observations of the visitors recorded" - Ferguson. "The expedition achieved notable scientific results and corrections in maps much meteorological data and many rock samples and botanical specimens were brought back. Lesson was the naturalist of this expedition and his account of the voyage supplies the details which Duperrey failed to publish" - Hill. Ferguson's collation differs from the present set in a way that would suggest he transposed the pagination of the two volumes. The present set is self-evidently complete in the original bindings.
