In 4°(27,5x19 cm); XXIV-841-(1) pp. e 21 belle tavv., 14 cromolitografiche e 7 inc. su legno (ognuna protetta da velina), una carta di distribuzione a colori e 286 inc. in legno nel testo. Completo. Bellissima legatura coeva in mezza pergamena. Dorso a 4 nervi. Titolo, filetti e fregi in oro al dorso su fascetta rossa e verde. Esemplare in barbe ed in perfette condizioni di conservazione. Seconda edizione italiana, tradotta sulla terza ediz. tedesca dell'opera "Illustriertes Tierleben" (1890-93), del grande naturalista tedesco A.E.Brehm. Questa seconda edizione è composta da undici volumi che a loro volta si suddividono in 6 opere a se stanti ognuna dedicata a diversi tipi di animali. La prima edizione uscì nel 1872. Questa seconda edizione, uscita a più riprese tra il 1893 ed il 1907, oltre ad alcune correzioni presenta 14 bellissime tavole in cromolitografia non presenti nella prima edizione. Il volume qui evidenziato è la monografia dedicata agli insetti, miriapodi e aracnidi. Alfred Edmund Brehm (Renthendorf, 2 febbraio 1829 - Renthendorf, 11 novembre 1884) fu un celebre biologo e scrittore tedesco, figlio di Christian Ludwig Brehm. Grazie alla sua intuizione di produrre un'opera di zoologia diretta al grande pubblico ma molto precisa e accurata (specialmente rispetto ad altre opere prodotte antecedentemente) il suo nome divenne famosissimo. Brehmamava viaggiare e nel 1862 accettò l'invito del Duca Ernesto II di Saxe-Coburgo-Gotha di accompagnarlo in un viaggio in Abissinia. Successivamente, Brehm viaggiò in Africa, così come in Scandinavia e Siberia. I suoi scritti e i suoi resoconti di spedizione sul mondo animale furono ben accolti dalla borghesia intellettuale tanto che quando l'editore dell'Istituto Bibliografico, Herrmann Julius Meyer pensò di pubblicare un volume sul mondo animale pensò subito a Brehm. Questo libro divenne famoso in tutto il mondo con il titolo "Vita degli Animali". Sebbene dai tempi di Brehm a oggi l'etologia abbia fatto passi da gigante, quest'opera è ancora ben nota nel mondo scientifico. La vita di Brehm fu tutto un susseguirsi di impegni letterari, spedizioni scientifiche ed eventi culturali. Nonostante questo, nel 1862, accettò il posto di primo direttore allo zoo di Amburgo e mantenne questa carica fino al 1867. Successivamente si trasferì a Berlino, dove aprì un acquario. Rimase all'acquario fino al 1874. Nell'inverno tra il 1883 e il 1884 Brehm progettò una serie di eventi culturali negli USA. Poco prima della partenza, i suoi quattro figli contrassero la difterite. Dal momento che non poteva permettersi di infrangere il contratto, Brehm, vedovo dal 1878, andò avanti lo stesso con i suoi impegni. Alla fine di gennaio ricevette la notizia della morte del più giovane dei suoi figli. Dopo aver appreso con tristezza questa notizia, Brehm ebbe una recidiva di malaria, contratta in Africa ai tempi delle sue spedizioni. L'11 maggio 1884 ritornò a Berlino. Allo scopo di trovare un po' di pace, a luglio ritornò alla sua casa natale di Renthendorf, dove morì l'11 novembre 1884. L'edizione italiana della "Vita degli animali" si avvale della traduzione del grande zoologo, medico, scrittore e divulgatore scientifico originario di Venaria Reale (Torino), Michele Lessonache fu il primo a tradurre e portare in Italia le teorie darwiniane. Esemplare perfetto ed in bellissima legatura coeva.

Usually offered in two volumes, but this copy has them combined into one volume. Boards rubbed, front free endpaper chipped at the fore edge, as usual a bit foxed in the text, otherwise a good copy.
