‎Edition définitive complète de ce monumental classique de la littérature entomologique, qui parut pour la première fois de 1879 à 1907. Fruit d'une vie dédiée à l'étude des comportements des insectes, les «Souvenirs entomologiques» valurent à leur auteur une considérable notoriété, non seulement pour la qualité scientifique de l'oeuvre, mais également pour son style particulièrement agréable à la lecture (prix Née de l'Académie française en 1910). Admiré par Darwin qui le qualifiait, en 1859 déjà, d'“observateur inimitable” dans son fameux «Origin of Species», Fabre n'en demeura pas pour autant convaincu, sa vie durant, que les espèces étaient fixes, et non sujettes à une quelconque évolution. Chaque espèce animale est immuable, selon lui, avec le même bagage instinctif et physique qu'à son apparition. Le onzième volume (qui fait souvent défaut à cette série) contient le très utile «Répertoire général analytique des Souvenirs entomologiques» ainsi que la biographie de l'auteur par son gendre, G.-V. Legros.“Fabre devoted himself almost exclusively to the research on biologie and behavior of insects, that was to make him one of the great figures of entomology, in 1859 Charles Darwin cited him in his Origin of Species. Fabre's ten-volume (here present with the often missing 11th volume, by G.-V. Legros «La Vie de J.-H. Fabre» followed by «Répertoire général analytique des souvenirs entomologiques»), which presents a considerable number of original observations on the behavior of insects (and also of arachnids).” (DSB). (DSB) ---- "Fabricius was undoubtedly one of the most distinguished entomologists and ranks with Carl de Geer, P.A. Latreille, A.G. Oliver and other prominent specialists of earlier times. In many respects he surpassed them, especially as a theoretical natural scientist. Linnaeus, whose most important contribution hardly lay in the field of entomology, was full of admiration for him and his colleagues throughout the world expressed great respect for his work... Two basic principles guided Fabricius' approach to entomological systematics : he distinguished, on the one hand, between the artificial and the natural characters ; and, on the other hand, he stressed the importance of the various structures of the mouth... He founded his sytem on the genus and the species which in his opinion constituted the main bases. It seemed especially important to Fabricius that genera were the natural combinations of related species. He believed that classes and ordines were artificial concepts. He seems to have understood that even genera can be classified into the natural system - the nearest equivalent to our present families - but he probably understood that the time was not yet ripe, that scientific knowledge and general outlook were too narrow for such classification. He thought of one large system based on the structure of the mouth organs as being the natural system. It was Fabricius'greatest ambition to build a system based on the naturally defined genera, without doubt a definite and new contribution to insect systematics. Rare complete set of a hymenopterological catalogue of all Braconidae from the Palaearctic and Ethiopean (i.e. tropical sub-Saharan, or Afrotropical) region known up till then. With good keys and detailed descriptions. About 50 to 60 Lieferungen were projected, but in all 31 (in 14 parts) were published. Uncut. Several spines worn and creased, some covers detached and a bit soiled. Band IV, Lieferung 1-3 has several pages with dampstaining, and plate and caption of the plate with waterdamage (but without loss of text or figures).‎

Volume one with gilt title, volume II with silver title. Scarce set of a hymenopterological catalogue of Braconidae from the Palaearctic region. With good keys and detailed descriptions. The second volume has "Vorwort zum III. Bande", but this is because Band II from the series does not deal with palaearctic species. A few pages with short (8 mm) marginal tears, else a good and well bound set of these scarce volumes.‎
