‎Paris, EDHIS 1981. Bound together in 7 volumes. 8vo. Imitation leather. All published. Well executed reprint of this rare and important revolutionary journal. The organ of the 'Cercle Social', defenders of the 'tribuns' of the people. The primary function was to reprint the minutes of the Cercle Social meetings and discuss issues relevant to the club's concerns. Worthy of special mention are Fauchet's weekly commentaries on Rousseau's Contrat Social, many of Etta Palm's feminist writings, speeches by Condorcet on political matters, a debate over Voltaire's place among the Revolutionary patriarchs, and a letter by Madame Roland advocating inheritance law reform. During the spring of 1791, the journal reprinted many documents from the burgeoning democratic movement, including several Cordeliers Club petitions. Among the other authors published in this journal were Cloots and Thomas Paine (Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution, 1789-1799, vol. 1, p. 112).‎

With the establishment of the Villèle government part of the staff of Le Défenseur identified itself with power, a smaller minority called l'incorruptible, moved to found the Drapeau Blanc. The Drapeau Blanc was an ultraroyalist newspaper of the Restoration and expressed from the start the most extreme ultraroyalist views to be found in the whole of the Restoration press. From 1820 on, the censors removed a great many articles from the Drapeau Blanc. The 'Avertissement' claims that the continuous requests for the reprinting of certain articles has made the present publication necessary in which the more important articles on politics and religious questions are published again. - The first leaf with a repaired tear in the outer blank margin, paper somewhat browned, last part of the volume with a faint stain in the outer blank margin.‎

‎Entire May 13, 1806-issue of the Balance and Columbian Repository No. 19, Vol. V. - [FIRST DEFINITION OF A COCKTAIL - THE PAPER THAT IS CELEBRATED ON WORLD COCKTAIL DAY]‎

‎Hudson, (New York), 1806. Small folio (30,4 x 23,7 cm). The entire May 13th issue, consisting of four leaves, with a blue marbled paper back-strip housed in magnificent custom-make full morocco box of Prussian Blue goatwith a morocco-onlay of an iconic cocktail-glass on the front board. The cocktail-glass is richly gilt with a geometric pattern in art-deco-like style and with an onlay of turquoise green representing and olive, with a black stick through it. A bit of brownspotting and some of the print a bit vague, due to the paper quality.‎

‎Exceedingly scarce first printing of the May 13th 1806-issue of ""The Balance and Columbian Repository"", in which we find the very first published definition of the word cocktail, the earliest reference of the word ""cocktail"" as we know it. This seminal issue of the now rather obscure paper constitutes the most important event in cocktail history. It is here that we find the earliest definition of the word cocktail and here that we find the first cocktail recipe (""a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters...""). "" The very first published definition of the word ""cock-tail"" appeared on 13th May 1806 in The Balance and Columbian Repository in 1806 and this historic event is now commemorated every year by World Cocktail Day."" (31 Dover - History of the Cocktail Blog) ""...the Balance article is the earliest written record that not only mentions the word ""cock-tail"" but also gives the recipe, so it's appropriate that theirs is the piece we celebrate on World Cocktail Day."" (saveur.com, How the Cocktail got its Name). ""World Cocktail Day is a celebration of cocktails around the globe, marking the publication date of the first definition of a cocktail on May 13th in 1806... New York tabloid 'The Balance and Columbian Repository' defined a cocktail as ""a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters..."" in response to a reader's question. A cocktail, as we know it, is used to refer to a drink that contains two or more ingredients with at least one of in the ingredients alcohol. The word 'cocktail' has now become embedded in our drinking vocabulary as the drinks are widely accessible with their ingredients easy to adapt to suit every taste."" (worldcocktailday.co.uk). ""No one knows when or where the first drink called a cocktail was mixed. But 200 years ago today a full-blown description of a ""cock-tail"" first made it into print, an anniversary being commemorated by the Museum of the American Cocktail with events in Las Vegas and New York.According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word ""cocktail"" first appeared in 1803 in a publication called the Farmer's Cabinet, but there was no explanation of what sort of drink this cocktail was, other than that it was ""excellent for the head."" On May 6, 1806, the word turned up again -- this time in hyphenated form -- in the Balance and Columbian Repository, a Federalist newspaper in Hudson, N.Y., where it figured in one of the paper's regular jibes at the party of President Thomas Jefferson.""Rum! Rum! Rum!"" read the headline in that paper. ""It is conjectured, that the price of this precious liquor will soon rise at Claverack,"" the Balance wrote, given that a candidate there for the state Legislature must have used up the town's stocks of alcohol in a frenzy of boozy vote-buying. According to the Balance, the candidate had served up 720 rum-grogs, 17 dozen brandies, 32 gin-slings, 411 glasses of bitters and 25 dozen ""cock-tails."" But all this generosity with refreshment was for naught, the newspaper teased, as the candidate lost.No description of those 300 cock-tails there. But then a reader of the paper inquired, writing that he had heard of a ""phlegm-cutter and fog driver, of wetting the whistle, of moistening the clay, of a fillip, a spur in the head, quenching a spark in the throat,"" but ""never did I hear of cock tail before."" On May 13, the editor of the Balance responded that he made ""it a point, never to publish anything (under my editorial head) but which I can explain."" A cock-tail is ""vulgarly called a bittered sling,"" he explained to his readers. That is, the drink is ""a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters."" (Eric Felten: The Cocktail Bicentenniel. In: The Wall Street Journal May 13th, 2006).‎

‎L'homme-femme. Réponse a M. Henri d'Ideville. - [COINING ""FEMINIST"" - PRESENTATION-COPY - ONE OF 25 NUMBERED COPIES ON HOLLANDE]‎

‎Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1872. Lex 8vo (24,8 x 16 cm). Bound uncut and with the original front wrapper in a nice early/mid 19th century green half morocco binding with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Very light wear to edges and to raised bands. Front wrapper a little dusty and partly mounted on a piece of paper. Two small nicks to outer blank margin and with handwritten pencil-annotation to blank top as well as pencil-inderlining of the author, title, and year and with the publisher information lightly crossed out, also in pencil (all indicating layout-corrections, perhaps for following issues). A nice and clean copy. (4), 177 pp. 4-line Handwritten presentation-inscription to half-title, ""à Regnière"", dated 12 Febryary 1873 and signed ""A Dumas.""‎

‎Scarce first printing – presentation-copy and one of 31 large paper copies, being no. 20 of 25 numbered copies on Hollande (out of a total of 31 numbered copies - 1 on vélin, 5 on Chine, and 25 on Hollande) - of the seminal work that coined the word ""feminist"", to refer to liberated women. Written as a response to an article by Henry d’Ideville, where he poses the question “should the adulterous woman be killed?”, Dumas’ l’Homme-Femme (“The Man-Woman”), which advocates the right of a man to kill his adulterous wife (something legal under the Napoleon Civil Code of 1804) stirred intense controversy across Europe and became an instant bestseller, with 50,000 copies sold in 3 weeks, 49 reprints, and several subsequent translations. “The feminists (excuse this neologism) say .... all the evil rises from the fact that we will not allow that woman is the equal of man”, Dumas writes in the present work, coining the word “feminist” and at the same time indicating a lack of sympathy with the emerging women’s rights battle. Generally, he saw life ""as a battle between the woman and the man"", although his views on the subject were nor black and white. In spite of his reactionary views, he did respect what women might become, and even helped a few gifted young women to achieve their intellectual potential. ""The words feminism and feminist are used today throughout the Western world to connote the ideas that advocate the emancipation of women, the movements that have attempted to realize it, and the individuals who support these goals. Few people in the English-speaking world realize, however, that the origin of these terms can be traced to nineteenth-century French political discourse. The earliest origins of the French word “féminisme” and its derivatives are still obscure. Their roots should be traceable to the political agitation of the 1830s, during which time the related words socialisme and individualisme made their appearance in the political vocabulary of French-speaking peoples. … The term “féministe” has a less problematic history. The Robert dictionary gives the date as 1872 and attributes first usage to the French playwright and essayist, Alexandre Dumas fils. This usage can be verified" indeed, the word does appear in Dumas's L'Homme-femme (1872).” (Karen Offe, On the French Origin of the Words Feminism and Feminist, pp. 45-47). “In his work, Dumas probably coined the term “feminists” for the first time to refer to people who claimed 'that women are equal to men, and should be given the same education and rights as men.” (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München). The few numbered copies of this seminal work are extremely rare. We have not been able to trace a single copy apart from the present, neither at auction nor in libraries. The normal issue is in 12mo and significantly smaller than the 31 copies on large paper. The first issue of that is not common either.‎

‎Very rare first edition, presentation-copy with an exceptional provenance, of Lacan's groundbreaking doctoral thesis, which constitutes the foundation of all his later work and inaugurated a new era in psychology and psychiatry. The copy is inscribed and signed by Jacques Lacan to professor Hesnard - highly important fellow psychiatrist famous for introducing Freud in France - in November 1932 (""à monsieur le professeur Hesnard en signe de ma respectueuse sympathie, Jacques Lacan, Ce 26 novembre 1932""). Furthermore, the copy has been in the possession of the important psychoanalyst and historian Alain de Mijolla (1933-2019) and bears his extensive notes and underlinings. Lacan, who is often referred to as ""the most controversial psycho-analyst since Freud"", ""the father of French psychoanalytical thinking"", and a towering intellectual giant of the twentieth century, plays as dominant a role in modern psychology and the development of psychological thought as Freud. It is his doctoral dissertation (the present work) that constitutes the inaugural moment in his work. ""Lacan's theoretical engagement with psychosis constitutes a central platform for his ventures into psychoanalysis"" from his doctoral thesis on paranoia in the 1930s through to his seminar on Joyce in the 1970s, the question concerning the psychoanalytic treatment of psychosis was at the forefront of his clinical work."" Aimée, Lacan's patient and subject of his thesis, bears the same importance for the history of psychology as Anna O., the patient in Freud and Breuer's ""Stydies of Hysteria"". Aimée was a thirty-eight-year-old woman, who had tried to stab the celebrated actress Huguette Duflos and was thus imprisoned, in April 1931. The story immediately reached the press, and ""Aimée"" (Lacan's pseudonym for her) became famous in the whole country. Lacan began to see her one month later at the Sainte-Anne Hospital. Through biographical inquiry, Lacan established a classic picture of her and noticed a development that would come to play a central role in his psychological theory: after three weeks of incarceration, Aimée was almost completely out of her delusional state, which Lacan considered evidence of the acute nature of her paranoia. This connection, which according to Lacan meant that she found consolation only in her punishment, not in the act itself, caused Lacan to propose a new diagnostic category, namely ""self-punishment paranoia."" ""It [i.e. ""De la Psychose Paranoïaque""] took on the importance that had previously been accorded to studies in hysteria in the rise of the international movement. Just as Freud had given hysteria its patents of nobility in endowing it with full-fledged existence as an illness, so Lacan, forty years later, gave paranoia, and more generally psychosis, an analogous place within the French movement"" (E. Roudinesco: La Bataille de cent ans, l'histoire de la psychanalyse en France, Vol. 2, p. 114). With Lacan's doctoral dissertation, Aimée quickly became a cause celebre for the surrealists. In the ""De la Psychose Paranoïaque"", Lacan also included a selection of Aimee's copious writings, which were produced at the height of her psychosis. This also contributed to the immediate importance of the work and to the spreading of Lacan's novel theories. ""Certainly it was this feature which was seized upon by its first surrealist readers, and which gave to this medical thesis right from the start a position in contemporary, even avant-garde thinking, which was markedly different from the usual dustgathering oblivion that is the fate of such work."" (Olga Cox-Cameron: Lacan's Doctoral Thesis: Turbulent Preface or Founding Legend?) ""Jacques Lacan is regarded as the father of French psychoanalytical thinking. He trained in mainstream psychiatry and his doctorate thesis was supervised by Gaétan de Clérambault. After the Second World War he became a cult figure in French intellectual circles, mixing Freudian ideas with social comment. As with many French intellectuals, he founded an ephemeral one-man movement with many followers"" (Preface to the English translation (1986)). ""Jacques Lacan (April 13, 1901 to September 9, 1981) was a major figure in Parisian intellectual life for much of the twentieth century. Sometimes referred to as ""the French Freud,"" he is an important figure in the history of psychoanalysis. His teachings and writings explore the significance of Freud's discovery of the unconscious both within the theory and practice of analysis itself as well as in connection with a wide range of other disciplines. Particularly for those interested in the philosophical dimensions of Freudian thought, Lacan's oeuvre is invaluable. Over the course of the past fifty-plus years, Lacanian ideas have become central to the various receptions of things psychoanalytic in Continental philosophical circles especially."" (SEP). Provenance: Angelo Louis Marie Hesnard (1886-1969) was an extremely important early French psychonanalyst and psychiatrist famous for his contributions to French sexology in the 30'ies and his groundbreaking early studies on Freud. He was a founding member of the Société psychanalytique de Paris, founded in 1926, and he occupies a central role in the history of modern psychoanalysis, being the co-author of the first French work on psychoanalysis and the person who introduced Freudian psychoanalysis to France. In the fifties he debated with Jacques Lacan over the meaning of Freud's saying ""Where It was, shall I be"""" but when debarred by the IPA from the roster of training analysts as a representative of the chauvinist wing of French psychoanalysis, he followed Lacan into the École Freudienne de Paris in 1964. ""HESNARD, ANGÉLO LOUIS MARIE (1886-1969)A psychoanalyst, doctor with the French Navy, and professor at the École Principale du Service de Santé de la Marine... He was coauthor of the first French work on psychoanalysis and one of the founding members of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris (SPP). He was the son of Angélo Théodose Hesnard and Lélia Célénis Rosalie Blancon, from a family of judges. His brother Oswald, who had a degree in German, helped him understand Freud's writings. After completing his studies in Pontivy, he entered the École de Santé de la Marine et des Colonies in Bordeaux on October 20, 1905. A student of Albert Pitres, then of Emmanuel Régis, he wrote his dissertation in 1909 on ""Les troubles de la personnalité dans lesétats d'asthénie psychique,"" in which there is a reference to Freud. He continued his military career in Toulon, then, from 1910 to 1912, on the armored cruiser ""Amiral Charner"" in the Middle East.Upon his return in 1912 he was appointed assistant at the Clinique des Maladies Mentales at the University of Bordeaux, where he rejoined Emmanuel Régis, who encouraged Hesnard to study Freud. On January 2, Freud wrote to Karl Abraham, ""Today I received a letter from a student of Régis, in Bordeaux, written on his behalf, apologizing in the name of French psychiatry for its present neglect of Ya."" According to a letter to Ernest Jones on January 14, the reference is to the ""apologies from the French nation"" that Freud received. This was followed in 1913 by the publication of ""La doctrine de Freud et de sonécole"" by Emmanuel Régis and Angélo Hesnard in ""L'Encéphale""."" La Psychanalyse des névroses et des psychoses "" appeared in 1914. It was a lengthy précis-and as faithful as it was possible to be at the time-of Freud's principal theories, as Sándor Ferenczi noted in the review of the book he wrote in 1915. This was followed by an examination of the criticisms the theories had received from various authors, and finally by several commentaries, of which Hesnard claimed, after Régis' death, that he-Régis-was the principal author. They recognized that ""Freud's system seems to constitute, regardless of what one may say, one of the most important scientific movements of the current psychological period."" Nonetheless, their remarks essentially referred to what appeared to them to be no more than ""ingenious assumptions"" that were both original and well understood, since-and this is an argument that would be repeated for decades to come-""Freud's method of conception is based on that of Janet, whom he has constantly been inspired by. Transforming the term 'psychological analysis,' employed by Janet, into psychoanalysis has changed nothing in the method used by both students of Charcot."" The causal importance given to sexuality or symbolism was also criticized. While Freud, in his ""On the History of the Psychoanalytic Movement"" (1914d), concluded that ""Régis and Hesnard (Bordeaux) have recently [1914] attempted to disperse the prejudices of their countrymen against the new ideas by an exhaustive presentation, which, however, is not always understanding and takes special exception to symbolism,"" he reproached Hesnard for years for this type of finding. In France the work remained the only extensive essay on psychoanalysis for nearly twenty years and was reprinted in 1922 and 1929."" (Encycl.). Alain de Mijolla (1933-2019) was a psychoanalyst in the Societe psychanalytique de Paris in 1968, and by 2001 a training analyst there. He also created and chaired the International Association of History of the Psychoanalysis (AIHP) and received the Mary S. Sigourney Award in 2004 (stating about him: A renowned author and lecturer, editor and influential researcher of the history of psychoanalytic ideas, Dr. de Mijolla conceived and has directed and edited an authoritative Dictionnaire International de a Pysychanalyse in French and now in English. This dictionary, which has received widespread acclaim in Europe, is an extremely important undertaking for the whole psychoanalytic community. More than four hundred scholars have contributed to this dictionary, which is a landmark in its field. This dictionary of analytic concepts and terms includes commentaries on international psychoanalysis as well as brief biographies of the major pioneers of psychoanalysis. He has also contributed widely in the field of psychoanalytic history and is President of the International Association for the History of Psychoanalysis, which received a Sigourney Award in 2001.He wrote numerous articles and important works in the history of phychoanalytic and edited psychoanalytical collections at several publishers, including the three volumes of the ""International Dictionary of Psychoanalysis."" He is famous for his studies of Freud that shed new light on the history of psychology and on Freud himself, and he drew Freud into contemporary times, famously stressing the difficulties of representing the psychoanalytic setting in cinematic terms. The first edition of ""De la Psychose Paranoïque"" is of great scarcity, especially in wrappers and fully complete as here, with the half-title and the 7 unnumbered leaves with printed dedication to family, friends, and mentors. Furthermore, presentation-copies of this landmark work are of extreme scarcity, and the provenance of the present copy is very hard to beat.‎

Par Jn. Garcin.‎

‎Paris, Chez Delespinasse, Delaunay, Nepveu, Et chez l'Auteur, de l'Imprimerie de J. Gille fils, 1813. With 8 numbered engraved plates. xxiv, 93, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary marbled wrappers, uncut, as issued. Foster, Bibliography of Skating, 35. The rare first edition of the first French book describing ice-skating as an artisic and gracious form of moving, emphasizing grace and form, illustrated with 8 engraved plates: one as a frontispiece giving an overall view of a skating rink, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, and 7 further engravings of individual skaters in a different pose. It is one of the first separate works in any language devoted to ice-skating. The book was published when ice skating became something fashionable to do for the members of the European aristocracy.Garcin, as opposed to the English approach, compared skating with dancing and stressed grace and artistry. The work was dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. In France, its was Marie-Antoinette who introduced skating to the court, and she seems to have been a rather accomplished skater herself. In England the first club was founded in Scotland, Edinburgh, in 1742, the Edinburgh Skating Club. At the end a short dictionary of ice-skater's terminology is added. The work also gives suggestions as to the choice of skates, how to tie them, and the like; the skaters depicted in various positions have names such as "Le Beau Narcisse", "L'Apollon", l'Adonis", etc. Garcin's work remained unique and was reprinted some 40 years later, when ice-skating started to attract the attention (and participation) of the general public. - Small hole in page 81/2 affecting a few letters, plate 7 bound between plates 3 and 4, plate 8 bound between plates 5 and 6. ‎Histoire du Chevalier Bayard, Lieutenant général pour le Roy au Gouvernement du Dauphiné, et de plusieurs choses mémorables advenues en France, Italie, Espagne, & és Pays bas, Du Regne des Roys CharlesVIII, Louis XII, & François I, depuis l'an 1489, jusques à 1524.‎

‎A Paris, Chez Abraham Pacard, 1616. Title printed in red & black, printer's mark and a beautiful engraved portrait of Bayard. xx, 479, (33: index (1-27), errata (p. 28-31), privilege (32-33)) pp. 4to. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands, red label with gilt lettering, sprinkled edges, a few minor imperfections, a very nice copy. Not in Quérard, La France Littéraire; BMSTC, French Books 1601-1700, D.1310 (listed under Du Terrail). First edition of this interesting history of the Chevalier Bayard, Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard, better known as "the knight without fear and beyond reproach" (le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche). He himself however, preferred the name given him by his contemporaries for his gaiety and kindness, "le bon chevalier", or "the good knight". Bayard fought in a large number of battles in the late 15th and early 16th century: in 1494, he accompanied King Charles VIII of France's expedition into Italy to seize the Kingdom of Naples. This campaign is now known as the Italian War of 1494-1498; he was knighted after the 1495 Battle of Fornovo, in which he captured a standard. Shortly afterwards, entering Milan alone in pursuit of the enemy, he was taken prisoner, but was set free without a ransom by Ludovico Sforza; Bayard was the hero of a celebrated combat of thirteen French knights against an equal number of Spaniards, and his restless energy and valour were conspicuous throughout the Italian wars of this period. At the Battle of Garigliano in 1503 he single-handedly defended the bridge of the Garigliano against 200 Spaniards, an exploit that brought him such renown that Pope Julius II tried unsuccessfully to entice him into his service; in 1509, the League of Cambrai was formed between France, the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and the Papacy; in an effort to wrest from Venice its territorial empire in northeastern Italy. For this campaign, the king commissioned Bayard to raise a company of horse and foot. Up until that time, French infantry had been a despised rabble. Bayard's company became a model for discipline, high morale, and battlefield effectiveness; and played a key role that year in rescuing the French vanguard at the Battle of Agnadello, on 14 May 1509; against the Venetian forces led by Bartolomeo d'Alviano. The Chevalier Bayard died during a campaign in Italy in 1524. As a soldier, Bayard was considered the epitome of chivalry and one of the most skillful commanders of the age. He was noted for the exactitude and completeness of his information on the enemy's movements, which he obtained by careful reconnaissance and a well-arranged system of espionage. In the long history of mounted warfare, he rates highly as one of the greatest cavalry leaders of all time.In the midst of mercenary armies, Bayard remained absolutely disinterested, and to his contemporaries and his successors, he was, with his romantic heroism, piety, and magnanimity, the fearless and faultless knight (le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche). His gaiety and kindness won him, even more frequently, another name bestowed by his contemporaries, le bon chevalier.- Attributed by the BnF (notice FRBNF33992817, this edition) to Jacques de Mailles, secretary of Du Terrail, the dedication has been signed by Theodore Godefroy who was the editor and under whose name the book is also sometimes listed; BMSTC lists it under Du Terrail, Cioranescu 33407 under Godefroy, Hauser (376) claims the book was first published as La Très joyeuse, plaisante et récréative histoire du gentil seigneur de Bayard, composée par Le Serviteur Royal (Paris 1527) and states that the "Serviteur Royal" is probably De Mailles. The dedication is to Louis XIII, the notes are by Etienne Pasquier and De La Valette, the last 33 pages contain the Table, Fautes, Privilege and Achevé d'Imprimer; the printer's mark is a nice engraving by Léonard Gaultier and shows how an angel interrupts the sacrificing of Isaac by Abraham; a very nice copy from the library Philibert and Jules Germain Cholet and Léon Picard, with bookplate on front paste-down.‎

‎Lettre d'un jeune pair de France aux Français de son age.‎

‎Paris, Le Normant Fils, imprimeur du Roi, 1827. 16 pp. 8vo. Folded sheets, uncut. Larousse, Grand dictionnaire universel, vol. 11, p. 486. First edition. As a young liberal politician the author was noted for his publication concerning the freedom of the press, directed against Peyronnet; also this brochure raised much interest.Montalivet was peer of the Restoration, minister of the July monarchy and senator of the Third Republic. He inherited his father's title of count and his seat in the Peers when both his father and elder brother died in 1823. He advocated a constitutional course, opposed the Polignac ministry of 1829, and supported the 221 deputies who signed the address criticizing the king in March 1830.At head of title: 'Les amis de la liberté de la presse'.The Société des Amis de la Liberté de la Presse appeared briefly during the electoral campaign of 1827 when François-René Chateaubriand rallied Ultra and moderate royalists opposed to the Villèle government to protest censorship of the press and to elect deputies to the Chamber who would abolish censorship laws. Chateaubriand had become a dangerous opponent of the Villéle government in June 1824 when the celebrated writer had been unceremoniously dismissed from his post as minister of foreign affairs. The ordinances of 24 June 1827, which reimposed censorship on the periodical press, provided Chateaubriand with an opportunity for political revenge that he eagerly seized. Chateaubriand's society, probably never more than an informal grouping, formed early in June and included royalists, doctrinaires, and some members of the Center Left opposition that a common opposition, often personal, to the Villèle government, outrage at the reimposition of censorship, and admiration of Chateaubriand temporarily united in 1827. Meetings of the society brought together such figures as Prosper de Barante, the duc de Choiseul, the comte de Montalivet and the baron Hyde de Neuville, journalists like Alexis de Jussieu and Louis-François Bertin de Vaux and ambitious young intellectuals as de Salvandy and Villemain. Along with the more famous and influential society 'Aide-toi, le ciel t'aidera', the 'Amis' had an impact on the electoral campaign of 1827. Indirect testimony to the government's fear of the society's effectiveness lies in the policies adopted by the postal service. Because it could not be relied upon to deliver political pamphlets to provincial cities and towns, trusted friends of the society had to carry many works personally (See: Historical Dictionary of France from the 1815 Restoration to the Second Empire).‎

Contemporary polished calf, spine richly gilt with red label and gilt lettering, all edges red, front joint split but solid, head and foot of spine damaged. INED 3346 (edition published in 1767); Conlon 25:572. Second edition, considerably augmented. The first edition, published the previous year in Cologne, had one volume only (see Conlon). A celebrated work by the Anglophile Swiss author Beat de Muralt (1665-1749) who influenced Voltaire, Rousseau, and Albrecht von Haller. Although the book had circulated widely in manuscript before publication, it proved to be a pioneer work in shifting Swiss and German interests from French classicism to English achievements and attitudes. Muralt had in fact travelled in France and England as early as 1694-1695. While in England he picked up some deistic views which on his return to Bern caused his banishment. It is one of the earliest detailed portraits in French of English society, it provides the reader with a vibrant foreigner's-eye view of late 17th century social life in England and France (but mainly of course in London and Paris) and it questions the perceived intellectual superiority of the French and in a sense this book preceeds the 'Anglomania' which surfaced during the century. The work was refuted by the abbé Desfontaines (in 1726) who wrote an Apologie du caractère des Français et des Anglais.Stamp neatly erased from first title-page, the first title-page has added in a contemporary hand the name of the author, the last title-page contains only the title, not giving the year of publication.‎

‎The exceedingly scarce first edition of Senn and Lahde’s (with the possible collaboration of Eckersberg) magnificent ”Klædedragter i Kjøbenhavn” (Costumes in Copenhagen), which is the first work devoted to costumes of the Danish capital and thus of seminal historical importance to the understanding of Copenhagen folklore at the brink of the golden age. The magnificent plates are of unusually high quality and differ from those of other works of this kind in being more artistically ambitious. The plates show attempts at depicting action and movement and portraying a certain situation. They are much less stiff than other costume plates of the period, and the features of the persons in the pictures show an intentional individualization. In short, they are much more closely related to the genre painting than would be expected. This highly important and extensive collection of Copenhagen costumes was made in Denmark, by foreigners and with an international aim. The Swiss painter and engraver Johannes Senn (1780-1861) spent 15 years in Denmark, from 1804 till 1819, and the German-born Gerhard Ludvig Lahde (1765-1833) came to Copenhagen in 1787 in order to attend the Art Academy and later became a Danish citizen. The two artists find themselves at the beginning of a period, in which national feeling, the strengthened sense of nationality, and a romantic view of nature are rapidly growing a period in which the interest in “common” man and the people of a nation are becoming the centre of attention. Out of this grows the need to represent the people, the “real” population, to the rest of the world and to claim a specific sense of what it is to be, in this case, a Copenhagener. “Klædedragter i Kjøbenhavn” began appearing in 1806, and we know that by 1810, three issues with six plates in each (i.e. 18 plates) had appeared. The following three issues appeared shortly after, though not all containing six plates (the fifth issue, as is evident from the exceedingly scarce title/wrapper bound in the present copy, only contained four plates), amounting to 34 plates in all. These plates later appeared in Lahde’s “Elementarværk I Tegnekunsten (1817-18), and a selection of 12 plates were issued separately under the title “Karakteristiske Figurer eller Det daglige Liv i Hovedstaden” (1812). A further three plates were issued later (these three plates have been added to the present copy), and in 1820, all 37 plates appeared together. In 1830, the work appeared again, this time with 35 plates, under the title “Kjøbenhavns Klædedragter eller Det Daglige Liv i Hovedstaden”. Provenance: Oskar Davidsen, one of the most significant Danish book collectors, whose collection included virtually all illuminated and coloured Danish books. (Colas: 1721 for the later edition, not having the original)‎
