Joseph Eugene Stiglitz an American economist and a professor at Columbia University, recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001), former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank. He is known for his critical view of the management ofglobalization, free-market economists, whom he calls ""free market fundamentalists"", and some international institutions like theInternational Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Stiglitz is one of the most frequently cited economists in the world. Stiglitz has to a large extent been influenced Keynes and has himself influenced famous and influential economist such as Paul Krugman, Jason Furman and Stephany Griffith-Jones.‎

‎First edition of Hayek's first book, famously stating that there is a business cycle and that it is caused by the organization of the monetary system - it was later to be known as the Austrian Business Cycle. The present work established Hayek's ideological position within the economic community and laid the foundation for his future career. Here, he wrote of the necessity of the trade cycle and that all economic phenomena present that regular wave-like appearance that we observe in cyclical fluctuations. ""For Hayek, the cycle was a virtually unavoidable consequence of a credit economy"""" ""Hayek's fundamental point is that the business cycle is an unfortunate but unavoidable concomitant of a credit economy"". (Bruce Caldwell, Hayek's Collected Works).Hayek's principal investigations in economics concerned capital, money and the business cycle. Ludwig von Mises had earlier applied the concept of marginal utility to the value of money in his Theory of Money and Credit (1912) in which he also proposed an explanation for ""industrial fluctuations"" based on the ideas of the old British Currency School and of Swedish economist Knut Wicksell. Hayek used this body of work as a starting point for his own interpretation of the business cycle, elaborating what later became known as the Austrian theory of the business cycle.This work was translated into English in 1933 as Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle. ‎First edition of this standard work on wages, Hicks' first major work, in which he proposed the macroeconomic hypothesis about INDUCED INNOVATION and foreshadowed important later developments in neoclassical distribution theory. Sir John Richard Hicks (1904 - 1989) was one of the most important and influential economists of the twentieth century. He has contributed seminally to both micro- and macro-economics and in 1972 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences together with Kenneth Arrow for ""pioneering contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory.""As a labor economist, Hicks already in 1932, aged 28, wrote his first major work, his very important ""Theory of Wages"", which serves as a fundamental basis for recent theories of distribution, now widely developed in e.g. Cambridge. Hick's early work is still considered standard in the field, and a vast amount of literature has been published on his hypothesis of induced innovation, which is presented in this work for the first time. The theory is formulated as thus: ""a change in the relative prices of the factors of production is itself a spur to invention, and to invention of a particular kind-directed to economizing the use of a factor which has become relatively expensive."" And this theory has also frequently been applied to increases in energy costs, which would thus come to motivate a quicker improvement in energy efficiency.But not only did Hicks here propound the still influential theory of induced innovation, this work is also considered as foreshadowing many of his later theories, which have become significant contributions to neoclassical distribution theory"" e.g. a reformulation of marginal productivity theory, further development of the product exhaustion theorem, a macroeconomic theory of relative factor shares etc., etc. ""The object of this book is ""a restatement of the Theory of Wages in a form which shall be reasonably abreast of modern economic knowledge."" Scott/ with the writer's/ best wishes"", of Hobson's first work on the link between imperialism and international conflict, based on his experiences from South Africa immediately before the Second Boer War.John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an important English economist and imperial critic, widely popular for his abilities as a writer and lecturer. He studied at Derby School and at Oxford, and in 1887 he moved to London, right in the middle of the economic depression. It is here that he writes his ""Physiology of Industry"" together with his friend, the mountain climber and businessman A.F. Mummery, which propounded ""the theory of underconsumption"". Hobson's work was not well received by the academic economists, and ultimately he was pushed out of their circle.During the 1890'ies he published a number of notable works on capitalism, poverty and social reform, among which his famous ""John Ruskin: Social Reformer"" from 1898, in which he anticipated the marginal productivity theory of distribution and presented his critique of the classical theory of rent.Now, Hobson was asked by the EDITOR OF THE ""MANCHESTER GUARDIAN"", C.P. SCOTT, to become their South-African correspondent, which proved to be a turning point in his personal as well as professional life. It is during this time that he develops the idea that modern capitalism is a direct cause of imperialism. As a correspondent, he covers part of the Second Boer war, and his condemnation of the conflict is very strong. It is this conflict, and the political situation that immediately precedes it, that is the focus of the present work, in which he, for the first time, demonstrates how international conflict and imperialism are directly connected. The ideas initially presented in the present work are elaborated further in what must be considered his main work, ""Imperialism"" from 1902. It is Hobson's theories on imperialism that have gained him the great international reputation that he carries to this day, and it is these theories that have influenced thinkers such as Trotsky, Lenin, etc.Charles Prestwich Scott (1846-1932) was the editor of the ""Manchester guardian"" from 1872 until 1929"" in 1907 he became its owner. He was a renowned British journalist, publisher and politician. The ""Manchester Guardian"" was part of his entire life (the founder was his uncle), and he was responsible for the political line of the paper for more than 50 years. For the first 15 years as its editor, Scott maintained a moderate liberal line, but when Hartington and Chamberlain split the party in 1886, formed the Liberal Unionist Party and backed the Conservatives, Scott, and with him the Guardian, made a left turn and supported Gladstone in his support for Irish Home Rule and ""new liberalism"". It is after this political turn that Scott asks the controversial economist Hobson to join the paper as its South Africa correspondent, a decision that did not go by unnoticed. The stand that the Guardian, with the published opinions of Hobson, took against the Boer War was highly unpopular, and it nearly cost Scott the election as a Liberal candidate in 1900, the year that Hobson's first work on the subject, ""The War in South Africa"", was published and evidently presented to his boss, the brave politician.‎

‎Very rare first edition of Lenin's first published book, the seminal miscellany of his economic papers, which constitute the first outline of his revolutionary ideas. The work consists in five economic essays/studies, four of which are published here for the first time (""The Handicraft Census of 1894-95 in Perm Gubernia and General Problems of ""Handicraft"" Industry"""" ""Gems of Narodnik Project-Mongering"""" ""The Heritage We Renounce"" - all three written in exile in 1897 - and ""On the Question of Our Factory Statistics"", written in 1898), and one of which (""A Characterisation of Economic Romanticism"") had been published the previous year, in installments, in the magazine Novoye Slovo, April-July 1897. Before the present publication, only very few of Lenin's papers and articles had been published, and none of them in book form. The present publication brings to light Lenin's elaboration of the tasks of the Russian Marxists (both as to their programme, their tactics, and the organization as such) (""The Heritage We Renounce"") and gives us the basis for his take on Marxism. Much of the original material published here was used by Lenin, both directly (e.g. the ""Handicraft Census"") and indirectly (forming a basis for the work) in his later published book ""The Development of Capitalim in Russia"" (1899), which established his reputation as a Marxist theorist. Furthermore, the present publication constitutes Lenin's earliest economic writings directed against the Narodniks. As a whole, the present publication gives us the first rounded picture of Leninist thought and provides us with the basis for Leninist economics and politics. That which Lenin develops in the present studies and essays forms the basis for the capitalist and Marxist thought that he is later to present and which becomes the standard introduction to the Russian economy for later generations of Marxists. The work is of great scarcity and was presumably printed in very small numbers.‎

‎First edition of Juglar's seminal first paper on commercial crises, fluctuations of prices and discount rates of banks of France, anticipating many of the themes and ideas later to be included in his 'Juglar Cycles'. By shifting focus from theory of crisis to the theory of cycles, Juglar laid much of the foundation for all later Business Cycle Theories: ""If anyone can be singled out as first establishing the phenomenon of periodic business cycles as an indisputable fact of economic life, it is Clément Juglar"" (Blaug).Juglar first identified economic cycles 7 to 11 years long which was later divided into four distinct stages by Schumpeter: 1, expansion (increase in production and prices, low interest-rates). 2, crisis (stock exchanges crash and multiple bankruptcies of firms occur). 3, recession (drops in prices and in output, high interest-rates). 4, recovery (stocks recover because of the fall in prices and incomes).""Historically, commercial crises are always accompanied by monetary crises Juglar thus analyzed long series of banking statistics (discounts, metallic reserves, circulation of banknotes, deposits), at first only for France and later also for England, the Unites States and to a lesser extent for Prussia and Hamburg, which he compared with the variations in population, the price of corn, import and exports, rents and public revenue. He noted a strict correlation (especially in the variations of discounts and reserves) and that changes go through specific phases, always the same, and are in concordance in the countries where commerce and industry are more developed."" (Besomi)""Juglar's analysis of crises is essentially a monetary one - protracted periods of inflation and expansion are brought to an end when the banking system initiates a contraction in the face of unacceptable pressures on its specie reserves. This is very like the story Wicksell was later to tell, but without the sophistication of Wicksellian theory. Subsequent theories of the business cycle, which attributed the process to 'real' causes, were critical of this aspect of Juglar's argument. The observed periodicity of the cycle - of nine to ten years - is commonly known in the applied literature on business cycles as a Juglar cycle"". ‎Third edition of Lessius’ seminal treatise constituting one of the first works to deal with ethics and finance. Leonardus Lessius offers a detailed presentation of the late scholastic doctrine of ""restitution"": the doctrine of the obligation to pay damages and to compensate for enrichment. According to Roman Catholic doctrine, a sin could only be forgiven if the liable party had paid compensation for the damage or returned someone else’s property. Restitution thus transformed theological natural law into a genuine legal order which determined the daily life of the faithful. “Combining a full command of earlier scholastic authorities with a hitherto unprecedented grasp of market phenomena, Lessius provided fresh insights that challenged traditional economic doctrine in authoritative fashion. He is, certainly, the foremost continuator of the Spanish school of economic thought. Further, he has claims for consideration as a major contributor to the development of economic analysis.” (Gordon, Economic Analysis before Smith). “His work On Right and Justice is conceived as a commentary on the Secunda Secundae of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa, with one book devoted to each of the cardinal virtues" however Book II (Justice), which goes far beyond Aquinas’ text, occupies four-fifths of the entire work. It is a notable contribution to jurisprudential literature. First published in 1605, it was reprinted the following year in Lyon and in Paris, in 1617 in Venice and during the author’s lifetime alone twenty editions were issued, several of which included the appendix on the montes pietatis. Book II, ch. 20 deals with usury, and ch. 21 and 22 with exchanges and annuities. His economic teaching was in the tradition of the Spanish moralists, such as Azpilcueta and Covarrubias. He minimized the importance of the Bull Cum Onus promulgated by Pius V in 1568 against the rent-charges. He also defended the triple contract and held that the montes were justified in charging interest to reimburse administrative expenses. He knew Antwerp business well, including the Antwerp Exchange of which he wrote: “…the practice of the Bourse of Antwerp, where the merchants gather every day and take account of the abundance or shortage of money, of the number of exchanges, of the amount of merchandise and all other sources of gain in which there is need of present money. Then either by themselves or their agents they establish the price for the privation of money. Merchants who lend may demand this price for the reason that they are deprived of their money for such and such a time and may not call it back before the time agreed. This price is sometimes 6% per year and sometimes 7%, 8%, 9%, 10%, 11%, or 12% more than twelve percent they are forbidden to demand by the Constitutions of Charles V…” (Houkes, pp. 369-70) For centuries Lessius’ work was to some extent forgotten. Joseph Schumpeter afforded Lessius more than ample mention in his monumental “History of Economic Analysis” which brought him back from obscurity.‎

‎The very rare first edition of Rosa Luxemburg's magnum opus - ""without doubt, one of the most original contributions to Marxist economic doctrine since ""Capital"". In its wealth of knowledge, brilliance of style, trenchancy of analysis and intellectual independence, this book, as Mehring, Marx's biographer, stated, was the nearest to ""Capital"" of any Marxist work. The central problem it studies is of tremendous theoretical and political importance: namely, what effects the extension of capitalism into new, backward territories has on the internal contradictions rending capitalism and on the stability of the system."" (Tony Cliff). Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) was one of the most influential Marxists of the late 19th century. In her youth, she joined the socialist movement and went to Switzerland in exile in 1889. Here she studied law and economics and developed close connections to the leading members of the Russian socialist party. As opposed to Lenin, she was in complete favour of internationalism and therefore in opposition to the established Russian and Polish socialist parties that supported Polish independence. In 1893, she co-founded what was to be the forerunner of the Polish Communist Party, namely the Socialdemocratic Labour Party of Poland.In 1899, Rosa Luxemburg settled in Berlin and joined the German Socildemocratic Party, SPD and represented the revolutionary wing. She believed strongly in revolutionary mass action, but as opposed to Lenin, she was not completely bound to the revolutionary party and spoke out against movements like the reform union in Germany. ""Rosa Luxemburg was born in the small Polish town of Zamosc on 5 March 1871. From early youth she was active in the socialist movement. She joined a revolutionary party called Proletariat, founded in 1882, some 21 years before the Russian Social Democratic Party (Bolsheviks and Mensheviks) came into being. From the beginning Proletariat was, in principles and programme, many steps ahead of the revolutionary movement in Russia. While the Russian revolutionary movement was still restricted to acts of individual terrorism carried out by a few heroic intellectuals, Proletariat was organising and leading thousands of workers on strike. In 1886, however, Proletariat was practically decapitated by the execution of four of its leaders, the imprisonment of 23 others for long terms of hard labour, and the banishment of about 200 more. Only small circles were saved from the wreck, and it was one of these that Rosa Luxemburg joined at the age of 16. By 1889 the police had caught up with her, and she had to leave Poland, her comrades thinking she could do more useful work abroad than in prison. She went to Switzerland, to Zurich, which was the most important centre of Polish and Russian emigration. There she entered the university where she studied natural sciences, mathematics and economics. She took an active part in the local labour movement and in the intense intellectual life of the revolutionary emigrants.Hardly more than a couple of years later Rosa Luxemburg was already recognised as the theoretical leader of the revolutionary socialist party of Poland. She became the main contributor to the party paper, Sprawa Rabotnicza, published in Paris. In 1894 the name of the party, Proletariat, was changed to become the Social Democratic Party of the Kingdom of Poland" shortly afterwards Lithuania was added to the title. Rosa continued to be the theoretical leader of the party (the SDKPL) till the end of her life.In August 1893 she represented the party at the Congress of the Socialist International. There, a young woman of 22, she had to contend with well-known veterans of another Polish party, the Polish Socialist Party (PPS), whose main plank was the independence of Poland and which claimed the recognition of all the experienced elders of international socialism. Support for the national movement in Poland had the weight of long tradition behind it: Marx and Engels, too, had made it an important plank in their policies. Undaunted by all this, Rosa Luxemburg struck out at the PPS, accusing it of clear nationalistic tendencies and a proneness to diverting the workers from the path of class struggle" and she dared to take a different position to the old masters and oppose the slogan of independence for Poland. Her adversaries heaped abuse on her, some of them, like the veteran disciple and friend of Marx and Engels, Wilhelm Liebknecht, going so far as to accuse her of being an agent of the Tsarist secret police. But she stuck to her point.Intellectually she grew by leaps and bounds. She was drawn irresistibly to the centre of the international labour movement, Germany, where she made her way in 1898."" As late as the 1960'ies and 70'ies, she was still seen as somewhat of a revolutionary hero and champion of communism. ""When the First World War broke out, practically all the leaders of the Socialist Party [SPD] were swept into the patriotic tide. On 3 August 1914 the parliamentary group of German Social Democracy decided to vote in favour of war credits for the Kaiser’s government. Of the 111 deputies only 15 showed any desire to vote against. However, after their request for permission to do so had been rejected, they submitted to party discipline, and on 4 August the whole Social Democratic group unanimously voted in favour of the credits. A few months later, on 2 December, Karl Liebknecht flouted party discipline to vote with his conscience. His was the sole vote against war credits.This decision of the party leadership was a cruel blow to Rosa Luxemburg. However, she did not give way to despair. On the same day, 4 August, on which the Social Democratic deputies rallied to the Kaiser’s banner, a small group of socialists met in her apartment and decided to take up the struggle against the war. This group, led by Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht, Franz Mehring and Clara Zetkin, ultimately became the Spartakus League. For four years, mainly from prison, Rosa continued to lead, inspire and organise the revolutionaries, keeping high the banner of international socialism...The revolution in Russia of February 1917 was a realisation of Rosa Luxemburg’s policy of revolutionary opposition to the war and struggle for the overthrow of imperialist governments. Feverishly she followed the events from prison, studying them closely in order to draw lessons for the future. Unhesitatingly she stated that the February victory was not the end of the struggle but only its beginning, that only workers’ power could assure peace. From prison she issued call after call to the German workers and soldiers to emulate their Russian brethren, overthrow the Junkers and capitalists and thus, while serving the Russian Revolution, at the same time prevent themselves from bleeding to death under the ruins of capitalist barbarism.When the October Revolution broke out, Rosa Luxemburg welcomed it enthusiastically, praising it in the highest terms. At the same time she did not believe that uncritical acceptance of everything the Bolsheviks did would be of service to the labour movement. She clearly foresaw that if the Russian Revolution remained in isolation a number of distortions would cripple its development" and quite early in the development of Soviet Russia she pointed out such distortions, particularly on the question of democracy.On 8 November 1918 the German Revolution freed Rosa Luxemburg from prison. With all her energy and enthusiasm she threw herself into the revolution. Unfortunately the forces of reaction were strong. Right-wing Social Democratic leaders and generals of the old Kaiser’s army joined forces to suppress the revolutionary working class. Thousands of workers were murdered on 15 January 1919 Karl Liebknecht was killed" on the same day a soldier’s rifle butt smashed into Rosa Luxemburg’s skull.With her death the international workers’ movement lost one of its noblest souls. ‎First edition of the first Swedish translation of ""Quotations of Chairman Mao"" published in 1967, being the authorized translation from the English by Niels G. and Marika Holmberg. The Swedish translation has 33 chapters (as per the complete Chinese edition from 1965). In 1972, several editions of many languages were redone to remove the endorsements of Lin Biao. Lin Biao wrote an endorsement, choosing three sentences from the diary of Lei Feng, which he wrote in calligraphic script. This endorsement leaf is lacking in most copies due to political reasons: By heavily promoting the LRB, Lin Biao had greatly risen in importance within the Mao-hierarchy, and he was actually designated to become Mao's successor, however, rumours occurred that Lin Biao was planning to assassinate Mao and take over power immediately, and thus he was killed. Due to the close relationship between Lin Biao and Mao, the betrayal was considered the more disgraceful, in fact so disgraceful that it was decided that he had to be erased from modern history. Thus it was decided and commanded that the endorsement leaf was to be removed from all copies of the LRB, and getting caught with not having torn this leaf out might very well have meant the death penalty.The idea of publishing the little book of quotations, which are taken from the first official edition of Mao's writings (his selected works vols. 1-4, printed 1951-60), came to Lin Biao in late 1963 or early 1964, by which time the four volumes of Mao's works had become the chief reading and source of knowledge within China. The little (red) book was meant as inspirational reading for the public, and for several years a campaign was promoted urging (or perhaps commanding) everyone to study the thoughts of Chairman Mao in this form. The short quotation form made the thoughts more easily accessible, and even uneducated people (like the soldiers) were able to become acquainted with the thoughts and philosophy of their leader.""The LRB continued to be printed in huge quantities for mass distribution up until the time of Mao's death on September 9th, 1976. This brought about an official end to the Cultural Revolution (which had used the LRB as a frequent symbol). By the late 1970s a change in government discouraged its further circulation and millions upon millions of copies were collected and destroyed as obsolete paper even while the cult of Maoism continued. It was during the centenary of Mao Tse-tung's birth (1993) that copies were once again printed, this time as facsimiles in English, French and German being exact replicas dated 1966 and with ""First Edition"" printed behind each title-page. They can be easily distinguished by their bright shiny red laminated covers and the presence of colored photograph portraits near the front. As they can still be found all over China, most likely they have been printed again even more recently. No one denies Mao is the Father of his country, truly the last Emperor, a symbol of power and reverence who has been exonerated for the mistakes of his reign and consequently recognized for his achievements as hope for the future. His ideology forms a brilliant concept that is still readable and admired today for its political theories and strategies, and no doubt he would be very proud to know the effect he has had on his own country and the world will never forget him.""
