‎Samling af den danske Scenes Dragter i 48 colorerede Fremstillinger. - [ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF COPIES KNOWN]‎

‎Kjöbenhavn (Copenhagen), Steens Forlag, 1834. 12mo (15 x 9,5 cm). Lovely contemporary brown half calf with gilt ornamentation to spine. General wear along hinges and edges of boards. But overall a very nice copy. Tight and fine. Book-plate of Kaj Christensen (1960'ies) to inside of front board and and ownership signatures to front free end-paper (""W. Unsgaard"" and ""N. Neiidendam / 1900"") along with blindstamped ovnership stanp of Johan G. Melbye. Later pencil-annotation to inside of front board (stating that only tow copies are said to be preserved on private hands). VI, (2) pp. + 48 engraved and finely handcoloured plates. All the blank leaves inbetween the plates preserved as well.‎

‎Exceedingly scarce - one of only a handful of copies knwon to exist - first, and only, edition of Bruun’s “Collection of Costumes From the Danish Scene” from 1834, which contains 48 wonderful, engraved and handcoloured plates of costumes from some of the most famous plays and operas performed at the height of the Danish stage, including nine costumes to four of Mozart’s operas: La Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, and Seraglio. These 48 magnificent plates showcase the wonderful diversity of the Danish stage at the time, the strong Gothic influence, the great influences of both German and French romanticism, and the influence of the Orient upon costumes of the Danish stage as well (eg. Seraglio, Lulu). In addition to the costumes for the operas by Mozart and for some of the most cherished Scandinavian plays (primarily Holberg), we have costumes for a wonderful array of other plays and operas that showcase the great influx upon Danish performance from many parts of Europe – Austria, Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom. We have for instance Cinderella (Cendrillon), Monteverdi’s The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda, La Dame Blanche, Beckford’s Azemia, Weber’s Der Freischutz and his Preciosa (which is based upon a novella by Cervantes). The full list of costumes is as follows: 1: Saft - i Sovedrikken. 2 & 3: Salomon Goldkalb & Brant – i Kong Salomon og Jörgen Hattemager. 4-6: Anna, Casper & Samiel - i Jaegerbruden. 7: Pantsatte Bondedreng – i Stykket af samme Navn (i.e. in the play by the same name). 8. Joseph – i Joseph og hans Brödre. 9 & 10: Montefiascone & Cendrillon - i Cendrillon. 11: Wenceslaus - i Herman von Unna. 12: Roux – i Röverborgen. 13: Hans Mortensen - i Aprilsnarrene. 14: Amenaide - i Taneredo. 15: Geert Westphaler - i Stykket af samme Navn (in the play by the same name). 16: Geske - i Den politiske Kandestöber. 17: Barthel - i Viinhösten. 18: Azemia - i Stykket af samme Navn (in the play by the same name). 19: Don Juan - i Stykket af samme Navn (in the play by the same name). 20 & 21: Jane & v. Thyboe - i Jacob v. Tyboe. 22 & 23: Preciosa & Pedro - i Preciosa. 24: Ariel - i Alfen som Page. 25 & 26: Valborg & Erland - i Axel og Valborg. 27 & 28: Hvide Dame & Georg Brovn – i Den hvide Dame. 29 & 30: Syvald & Rödhætten - i Deodata. 31-33: Almaviva, Bazile & Figaro - i Figaros Giftermaal. 34. Trampel - i Fugleskydningen. 35 & 36: Constance & Blonde - i Bortförelsen af Serailet. 37-39: Dilfeng, Barka & Lulu - i Lulu. 40 & 41: Mad. Voltisubito & Ledermann - i Recensenten og Dyret. 42: Zoe - i Væringerne i Miklagard. 43-45: Papageno, Monostatos & Papagena - i Trylleflöjten. 46 – 47: Mad. la Fleche & Arv - i Jean de France. 48: Jeppe - i Jeppe paa Bjerget. Many of the costumes with depiction of the actors and actresses are important in themselves and not only in a broader perspective - setting the tone for how to depict the characters in some of the most famous plays and operas for decades to come. An example of an individually highly significant illustration in the present work is the drawing of Christine Zrza in Constanze’s costume in Seraglio, wearing a so-called “Turkish” costume as a woman of the harem of Selim Pasha’s palace. Zrza herself was a significant figure in the foundation of Mozart’s operas on the Danish scene, playing also the first Countess Almavira in Figaro’s Marriage, the first Sextus in Titus, and the first Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute. The work is of immense scarcity, with only very few copies known to exist. Apart from the copy in the Royal Library in Copenhagen, OCLC list merely one copy, at Harvard. This copy only collates as having merely 1f. in addition to the 48 plates, where as our copy has all the four leaves in front consisting in title-page, contents-leaves and half-title. We have been able to locate one copy sold at auction, that having merely 43 plates. It is said that merely two copies are knbown on private hands. The great book collector Oscar Davidsen had a copy in his collection (nr. 5 in his auction catalogue (1940), where it is said of it that ""this collection is of great scarcity). Krohn:1482.‎

‎Berlin, Fred. Dümmler's, 1850. 4to. In contemporary marbled paper covered boards. Spine loose and light wear to extremties, internally fine and clean. 86 pp.‎

‎First edition of Grimm's important work which he considered one of the very earliest to introduce cremation to the modern western world. Here Grimm traces cremation through the history of Western civilization and illustrated its aesthetic and ennobling benefits with a host of examples from various cultures, which to him, represented ""stages in the refinement of humankind"". ""While he described cremation as ""progress in the mental education of the people"". He dedicated the bulk of his speech to funerary rituals among ancient Greeks and Romans, whom he revered. Grimm focused on ethnological descriptions of cremation practices, but he also mentioned practical advantages, like improvising hygiene, saving space, and making the transport of remains easier. To preempt potential objections about the Christian belief in resurrection, he assured his audience that the physical product of incineration and decomposition were identical."" (Ameskamp, On Fire - Cremation in Germany).Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (1785 - 1863), German philologist, jurist and mythologist. He is best known as the discoverer of Grimm's Law, the author of the monumental Deutsches Wörterbuch, his Deutsche Mythologie and more popularly, as one of the Brothers Grimm, as the editor of Grimm's Fairy Tales‎

‎New York, Harper Brothers, 1863. 8vo. In the original brown embossed full cloth. Wear to extremities, internally fine and clean. 337, (1), 7, (3) pp.‎

‎First printing of Kemble's famous anti-slavery work which included the first printing of the word 'vegetarian', stating that: """"If I had had to be my own cook, I should inevitably become a vegetarian"". (p. 198). Her book is credited with influencing Britain's position of neutrality during the American Civil War despite the cotton industry's lobbying. Frances ""Fanny"" Kemble, a notable British actress from a theatre family in the early and mid-nineteenth century, married Pierce Mease Butler, an American heir to cotton, tobacco and rice plantations on the Sea Islands of Georgia. Kemble found, to her horror, that she was married to a slaveowner and they spent the winter of 1838-39 at the plantations, and Kemble kept a diary of her observations [the present work]. The journal circulated privately among her friends, but was not published until his husbands death in 1863, by the time of publishing the word probably had become more common. Sabin 37329‎

‎"ROSSI, OTTAVIO.‎

‎Elogi historici di Bresciani illustri teatro di Ottavio Rossi .‎

‎Brescia, Bartolomeo Fontana, 1620. 4to (225 x 170 mm). In contemporary full vellum with yapp edges. Title in contemporary hand to spine. Extremities with light soiling and a few dots and marks. Ex-libris (Richard Luckett) pasted on to pasted-down front end-paper. Small stamp to lower margin of front free end-paper. With light occassional brownspotting throughout. With numerous marginal annotations throughout by Bernardino Faini (or Faino - see below). Leaf inserted between p. 298 and p. 299, next to the entry of Cardinal Duranti, Bishop of Brescia, with a 12-line note (signed ""Bernadinus Fainus""), in which he descibes the Duranda-family from Pare in the commune of Bergamo. Engraved title-page and two blanks. (28), 519 pp. Provenance: Dr Richard Luckett (1945-2020), Research Fellow of St Catharine's, Cambridge.Constance Jocelyn Ffoulkes (1858–1950) or Monsignor Rodolfo Maiocchi (1862-1924). (see ""Vincenzo Foppa of Brescia: Founder of the Lombard School, His Life and Work"", p. 79).Bernardino Faino (1600-1673).‎

‎A most interesting copy with a fascinating provenance of the rare first edition of Rossi’s famous account of notable people and families from Brescia which, still today, is considered one of the most important late Renaissance and early Baroque sources to Brescia and the surrounding area. The present copy has belonged to Bernadino Faino, himself a notable Brescian. Faino has made numerous marginal corrections and annotations, many of which are of scholarly interest. For instance, the marginal annotations in the present copy possibly contain the only dating (1472) we have of the altarpiece by Vincenzo Foppa in Church of S. Maria Maddalena at Brescia (See Ffoulkes & Maiocchi, “Vincenzo Foppa of Brescia”, p. 79). Bernadino Faino (1600-1673) was an Italian priest and historian whose life was characterized by both adventurous exploits and scholarly pursuits. Instead of continuing in the family trade as a blacksmith, Faino chose a military career, joining Captain Tiberio Tengatini's company in the Venetian Republic's army. His loyalty to Tengatini led to a dramatic episode where he avenged his captain's murder by killing the perpetrator. This act resulted in a trial and his imprisonment, but he was eventually acquitted in 1626. In an unexpected turn, Faino was ordained as a priest in 1627, despite the serious charges he had faced. He served as chaplain and confessor at the Benedictine monastery of S. Spirito and was the General Superior of the Company of S. Orsola. His dedication to his ecclesiastical duties extended to his role as a caretaker of the Cathedral and director of the school of Christian Doctrine. Late in life, Faino turned to the study of hagiography and local ecclesiastical history - the period during which he most likely made the annotations in the present work. His works were the product of diligent document collection and scholarly effort. He authored various texts on archaeology, heraldry, and the history of Brescia, though his claims, especially regarding local saints, were often fantastical and primarly a product of his imagination.‎
