Il libro costituisce in Italia il primo contributo complessivo alla pedagogia dei movimenti sociali, un campo di studi emergente, che ha dei notevoli antecedenti nelle esperienze di educazione popolare e nelle pedagogie critiche. Le dimensioni educative dei movimenti sociali sono esplorate a partire da un approccio teorico-metodologico originale e rigoroso, e in riferimento a un caso empirico: il Movimento di Donne Contadine a Santa Catarina (Brasile). Dopo alcune essenziali contestualizzazioni teoriche, metodologiche e storiche, vengono indagati l'incidenza dell'impegno sulla formazione delle soggettività militanti, i conflitti cui espone la partecipazione e le trasformazioni che quest'ultima genera nella vita delle donne e delle comunità. Le implicazioni pedagogiche femministe e decoloniali delle pratiche del Movimento sono approfondite anche rispetto all'agroecologia, il tema fondamentale intorno al quale attualmente si articolano le lotte delle reti contadine internazionali.

' Het is bijna onmogelijk het lijden, de ellende en afstomping te beschrijven van de slaven die in Zanzibar worden ontscheept. Ze worden gelost uit een slavenschip waar ze meerdere dagen opeengehoopt hebben gelegen, met als enig voedsel een paar korreltjes rijst. Aan kopers is er op de slavenmarkt geen gebrek. Ieder onderzoekt het exemplaar dat hem aanstaat, op dezelfde manier als een lastdier; men laat het lopen, rennen, bukken, rechtop staan; men inspecteert de tanden en onderzoekt nauwkeurig de huid. Onderwijl laat de verkoper niets achterwege om ze aan te prijzen' (uit een ooggetuigenverslag). Toen de eerste Spiritijnse missionarissen in 1863 aankwamen op Zanzibar, werden ze direct geconfronteerd met de slavenmarkt, waar jaarlijks zo'n vijftig- tot zestigduizend slaven verhandeld werden. De sultan kreeg provisie voor iedere verhandelde slaaf.
