Spazia dal teatro giapponese No al carnevale brasiliano, dalle pratiche cerimoniali dell'Umbanda alle performance etnografiche recitate dai suoi studenti dell'università della Virginia. L'ultima parte del volume tenta un innesto tra neurobiologia e antropologia, per coniugare reciprocamente processi mentali e processi culturali.

Aspects of Ndembu Ritual (1967). [...] Turner e gli Ndembu, come Malinowski e Trobriandesi, Firth e i Tikopia, Fortes e i Tallensi, Evans-Pritchard e i Nuer o gli Azande, Leach e i Kachin, Beattie e i Nyoro, Middleton e i Lugbara, e così via: si tratta di accoppiamenti ormai classici, consegnati alla storia dell'etnologia e dell'antropologia del Novecento [...]. È molto probabile che parecchi rituali descritti in questo libro (il rito di circoncisione, i culti dei cacciatori, i rituali di afflizione) si siano modificati, e che alcuni si siano eclissati per sempre. br. La nostra vita è ricca di ritualità e rappresentazioni: ricorriamo a pratiche performative per mostrarci, raccontarci e "metterci in scena" quotidianamente. È così che facciamo esperienza del mondo e lo riproduciamo, interpretandolo e riscrivendolo. Victor Turner si chiede se l'esperienza può tornare a essere un momento di verità e di incontro: per riaffermare una soggettività che si riscopra padrona del proprio destino, al di là della macrofisica del dominio che l'ha estromessa da ogni possibilità di gestione collettiva. Ritrovare il senso di un'esperienza così concepita ci è più che mai necessario, oggi che il rumore di fondo si fa assordante e nulla si fissa e si deposita, gli accadimenti più insignificanti vengono trasformati in "eventi", navigare rimanda solo a Internet e la memoria che conta è quella del nostro smartphone.

Nella sua accezione tradizionale, romantica e ottocentesca, il paesaggio non esiste più; come sfondo di vita campestre o di vita naturale esso è stato quasi ovunque cancellato fuori di noi e dentro di noi. Con i suoi strumenti industriali l'uomo impronta in modi sempre più incisivi la superficie terrestre. Ciò tuttavia non esclude che il paesaggio, come realtà vista e vissuta, possa ancora utilmente essere assunto dalla cultura. Ma occorre una sua revisione epistemologica e concettuale, una sua ricollocazione scientifica. Questo libro considera il paesaggio nella sua dimensione antropica, come insieme di segni che rimandano alle relazioni interne delle società, ai loro modi di usare l'ambiente terrestre, di incidervi la propria impronta, sulla base di un confronto tra cultura e natura che varia a seconda delle forme di organizzazione che le stesse società sono riuscite storicamente ad imbastire nello spazio. Questo comporta uno spostamento d'interesse dal territorio alla società, alle sue strutture produttive, alla sua storia, alle sue rappresentazioni ecc. Si supera così la vecchia nozione di paesaggio pittorico, come quadro estetico del mondo, e quella che lo considera come dato oggettivo intimamente legato all'ambiente naturale e che, al di fuori della storia, si esaurisce scientificamente in una visione tassonomica della realtà.

Il beduino nato e cresciuto nel deserto aveva abbracciato con tutta l'anima questo credo di nudità per il motivo inespresso ma sentito che vi si sentiva libero, di là da ogni dubbio o esitazione. Vi perdeva legami materiali, comodità, ogni elemento superfluo o complesso per raggiungere una libertà personale che rasentava l'inerzia e la morte. La sua vita conosceva l'aria, i venti, sole e luce, spazi aperti e un immenso vuoto. Mediante un accorto utilizzo di fonti di diversa natura (dalle lettere e relazioni dei missionari cristiani, alle memorie di politici, militari e viaggiatori, sino alle opere di eruditi e di intellettuali), l'autore fornisce un quadro vivace dell'ambiente culturale europeo in cui sono nati da un lato la moderna indologia, e dall'altro una lunga serie di topoi e di preconcetti orientalistici che a lungo hanno caratterizzato l'idea che gli Europei hanno avuto dell'India.
