NUOVO. «Il presente lavoro ha per oggetto di studiare in che modo gli uomini che si è convenuto designare col nome di "primitivi" si rappresentano la loro propria individualità. In questo lavoro mi ero proposto di ricercare, alla luce dei risultati ottenuti nelle opere precedenti, quali nozioni essi posseggono relativamente alla loro vita, alla loro anima e alla loro persona. L'esame dei fatti mi ha condotto a riconoscere che essi non hanno, per parlare con esattezza, delle nozioni. Io infatti mi sono trovato in presenza di "prenozioni". «A scanso di equivoci, debbo dunque precisare il senso del titolo: "L'anima primitiva". Si tratta di rappresentazioni che, nelle società dette primitive, corrispondono in modo più o meno approssimativo a quelle che la parola "anima" implica per noi.» Cosa sappiamo quando parliamo di popoli primitivi? Quali nozioni posseggono relativamente alla loro vita, alla loro anima e alla loro persona? Oggetto di quest'opera, un classico dell'etnologia, è proprio quello di studiare in che modo gli uomini "primitivi" rappresentano se stessi e la loro propria individualità. "L'anima primitiva", pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1927, rimane uno studio stimolante e illuminato, una delle grandi opere che hanno aperto nuovi orizzonti al sapere umano. Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857-1939) insegnò a Parigi, all'Ecole des Sciences Politiques e poi alla Sorbona. Storico della filosofia, si rivolse alla sociologia e alla ricerca etnologica sotto l'influenza di Comte e Durkheim. "L'anima primitiva" fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1922.
