The symbolism, style, and elements involved in staging celebrations have held theoretical and practical interest for the Folklife Program since 1967, when the first Festival of American Folklore was mounted. Our goal is to present living traditional cultures authentically, understandably, and respectfully and as often as possible to recreate traditional forms of celebration. This has of necessity brought us face to face with the problems of the dynamics and semantics of festivity. The Folklife Program's collections are limited almost solely to recorded sounds and images of traditional cultures (the few objects acquired by us for this exhibition will find a permanent home in the Smithsonian museum collections). Material culture has, however, been a central theme in our activities?from a conference held in 1967 concomitant with the first festival to the publications of monographs and films on the manufacture, use, and meaning of traditional material forms. These predilections account for our acceptance of the offer to conceive and plan a museum exhibition. We were immediately struck by the difference between presenting traditional culture on the one hand through its living practitioners in a festival setting and on the other hand through objects in a museum setting. The basic difference, of course, is that people can be encouraged to speak for themselves while objects?even celebratory objects?cannot. Or rather, to quote Victor Turner, "objects speak," but in a symbolic language audible only to the people who make and use them. In Celebration: A World of Art and Ritual, the persons who have enabled us to hear what the objects say about traditional cultures are the researchers, who documented objects with information from their own ethnographic field research and gleanings from the published and unpublished work of others. Although the objects had sometimes lain virtually undocumented in Smithsonian collections since they were accessioned, the researchers have brought to light knowledge that enables us to hear what the objects say with understanding, respect, and some inkling of the historical conditions under which they were created. ... Ne trasse delle impressioni folgoranti che gli servirono per mettere in guardia il suo popolo dal fascino pericoloso dell'Occidente. Erich Scheurmann, un artista tedesco amico di Hermann Hesse fuggito nei mari del Sud per evitare la I guerra mondiale, raccolse questo tesoro di saggezza e lo pubblicò in un libro.'Papalagi' è un trattato etnologico sulla tribù dei bianchi, esilarante ed atroce.‎
