Christian Register The; Boston and Chicago Saturday September 6 1873
Boston MA: The Christian Register 1873. 56 x 70 cm. Very spirited colorful commentary in this paper. English Letter-- report of Americans arriving at Liverpool just delivered from the perils and nausea of the deep enters the magnificent Lime Street Station to book for London. ""The English railway carriage is a model of discomfort and ugliness."" You may be locked into a swift express with a lunatic who is calm until you are beyond the possibility of help; or a well-dressed woman who coolly informs you that if you do not line her purse she will disgrace you with false complaints at the next station. The State and the Catholic Church-- laments the problems of Germany and Switzerland in coping with the Catholic Church; these countries have framed new laws against Rome and the Jesuits. Hostilities have commenced and neither Prince Bismarck nor the intoxication of Rome nor the logical absolutism of the Company of Jesus are likely to yield. The London Inquirer writes ""the great liberal preacher Henry Ward Beecher has been recently charged with 'unsoundness' heterodoxy and defective sympathies with Evangelical doctrine by some. who have an acute scent for heresy."" Beecher's trenchant defense of these charges is such as to ""persuade the unprejudiced bystander of the truth of the charges."" Newspaper some pinholes in folds yet very good. . Catalogs: History. Christian Register The; Boston and Chicago Saturday October 4 1873
Boston MA: The Christian Register 1873. 56 x 70 cm. Very spirited colorful commentary in this paper. Lead article: ""The Roman Catholic Conception and the Infallibility"" by Bishop Ferrette. In prominent article on first page of this issue controversial Greek Bishop Ferrette tells how two Roman Catholic doctrines came to be as a triumph of one wing of the heirarchy over another. He writes about Gregory VII Hildebrand and his ""miserable tool"" Peter Damian. Article is very critical and harsh about Roman Catholic faith and doctrine. ""A New Route for the Slave Trade"" describes the illusory progress of the Egyptians. Talk of getting slave trade abolished in Egypt and Turkey. Anti-Catholic. Newspaper some pinholes and small tears in folds good. . Catalogs: History. The Christian Register unknown

Boston MA: Christian Register Association 1873. 54 x 70 cm. "Starring in the Pulpit""--initiative in England of Mr. Cowper-Temple to allow different speakers to occupy the pulpit to make sermons more interesting. E.g. Dr. Livingstone and Mr. Stanley talking about Africa. Description of Rev. Dr. Channing. In the street he is of slight frame below middle stature wrapped with a shrinking closeness from the air pursuing his way with the irresolute step and subdued countenance of an invalid.
