CHINA Canton School
Album of exceptional watercolours of members of the Chinese court and of various tradesmen and occupations
Canton 1800. Large 4to. 15 x 12 1/2 inches. 141 watercolours on thin paper nearly all captioned in ink in Chinese in the lower right corner each tipped to a sheet of wove paper. A few repaired tears. Mid-nineteenth century citron half morocco over marbled paper covered boards spine with raised bands in six compartments lettered in gilt in the second compartment the others with a repeat decoration in gilt marbled edges Provenance: Lady Anne Cowdray Dunecht House Aberdeenshire armorial bookplate An extraordinary album of early Chinese export watercolours of the highest quality. Beginning in the late 18th century centred on the treaty port of Canton there existed a thriving trade in ethnographical watercolours executed by local Chinese artists and sold to the western merchants and travellers. The best known result of this trade is William Mason's Costume of China first published in London in 1800 which is illustrated with 60 hand-coloured aquatints adapted from a series of original watercolours by Pu-Qua of Canton. It was common for the local artists including Pu-Qua to work from a set series of models. The present album includes a number of compositions that are from the same set of models as those used by Pu-Qua but they include more detail and more of the trade-associated paraphernalia than are shown in the images as published in Mason's work. This suggests that they were not copied from Mason but were after another more detailed source or were unique compositions by the artist based on a similar series of models. Importantly these watercolours are of a uniformly higher quality than usually encountered and represent not only a wide-array of occupations but also members of the highest echelon of Chinese society. The detailing on the costumes worn by these members of the royal court is breathtaking with copious use of gilt. Later collections of Chinese export watercolors were routinely executed on less expensive pith paper whereas the present watercolours are on high quality tissue and are larger in size than those typically encountered. The album represents an earlier more prestigious style of export watercolor paintings specifically meant for wealthy Europeans. These are Chinese watercolors of the highest quality designed and executed to the highest standards. The album was once owned by Annie Pearson Viscountess Cowdray 1881-1931 Steward of Colchester and wife of Lord Weetman Dickinson Pearson 1st Viscount Cowdray. Cf. Crossman The China Trade Princeton: 1972; cf. Clunas Chinese Export Watercolours London: 1984. unknown

CHINA Company School
An album of original botanical watercolours
Shanghai 1790. Folio. 17 1/8 x 12 3/4 inches. 20 original watercolour and bodycolour drawings 14 x 11 1/2 inches and smaller on Chinese paper mounted one to a page. Mid-19th century dark red morocco gilt covers with an elaborate gilt border of two thick fillets flanking a highly decorative roll with cornerpieces of large square stylised flower-heads the border enclosing a large central panel blocked in semi-relief with highly elaborate panels to an overall Adam-influenced design centering on an oval with a large flowerhead within a lozenge this panel filled with stylized scrolling foliage and flowerheads the spine in five unequal compartments each gilt with numerous small tools the third compartment with a design centered on a shaped lozenge the others with a repeat design of a broken oval with numerous small tools elaborate gilt turn-ins white watered-silk textured paper endpapers damascened steel clasp gilt edges. A fine early collection of beautifully composed images in a style that recalls traditional Chinese compositions whilst also making allowances for the differing Western taste of the European patrons who supported a thriving school of highly talented natural history artists in Shanghai from the late 18th century onwards. The drawings are all on Chinese paper suggesting an early date. From about 1800 onwards the Shanghai artists were generally supplied with English wove paper often 'Whatman' paper. The supposition of an early date is also supported by the style of drawing which still shows strong traces of the traditional Chinese style of painting. The artist or artists of these drawings have not yet learned to portray their subjects according to the western notion of a 'botanical drawing' - i.e. with samples of the fruit or seeds and perhaps a dissection of a flower to show its structure. This collection forms part of what was to become a well-established tradition of almost exclusively anonymous Chinese artists working in and around the coastal trading ports producing work for Western patrons more particularly the members of the East India and Dutch East India Companies. The best of the drawings are arguably a match for anything that Western botanical artists were producing at the time. The quality of the album into which these drawings have been carefully mounted suggest that at an early date their outstanding quality was recognized. The subjects include a striking amaranthus a mallow tree peonies narcissi prunus begonia iris one watercolour including an unidentified bird and a very fine image of a spray of wild white dog-rose being visited by five bees and three butterflies. unknown

A FINE ALBUM OF BOTANICAL WATERCOLOURS.

Original marbled paper wrappers and half red sheep marbled paper boards portfolio modern red morocco-backed clamshell case. Provenance: with the bookplate of Frederick 2nd Lord Hesketh his sale Magnificent Books Manuscripts and Drawings from the Collection of. his sale 7th December 2010 lot 27. A beautiful album of exquisite watercolours of exotic Asian flowers. The market for Chinese export watercolors grew out of the trade in porcelain to the West. In Britain botanical interest in the exotic botany of the world was spurred on by Sir Joseph Banks 1743-1820 the president of the Royal Society. However the botanical treasures of China must have been known in England well before 1750 since Sir Hans Sloane 1660-1753 owned a fine album of such drawings now in the British Museum. There was a long tradition of botanical writing and illustration in China dating back to the Song dynasty 960-1279 and the desire of Western scholars to obtain accurate depictions of unfamiliar Asian flora and fauna was easily satisfied by Chinese natural history watercolorists. The tradition of botanical painting was so prevalent throughout China that western traders were not solely reliant upon the workshops at Canton the main trading city-port and also obtained watercolors from other parts of the Chinese community in southeast Asia These particularly fine examples date from the late eighteenth century and display an acute sense of scientific accuracy balanced by a strong aesthetic sensibility. It is probable that they were originally commissioned by a Western scholar or amateur gentleman-botanist curious as the appearance of the exotic fruits of Asia. As is typical of Chinese export watercolors of this period each work shows the fruit with its complete vegetation and also contains a cross-section illustration depicting the interior flesh of the fruit. Each of these minutely detailed exquisitely colored and fully animated renderings seem ready to burst out of its compositional boundaries. Indeed from the incredibly life-like rendering of a pineapple's prickly scales to the emotionally charged depictions of seeds liberating themselves from their shells it is clear that the watercolorist possessed an incredibly heightened scientific and decorative sense. CHINESE SCHOOL.
A Group of Six Courtly Ladies at Leisure
Canton 2nd half of 19th century. . Watercolour and gouache on pith paper edged in turquoise silk ribbon and laid on paper; glazed and framed. Overall 27 x 39cm. An exquisite group of interior scenes exclusively of noblewomen and ladies in waiting engaging in various genteel activities such as flower arranging painting poetry reading and writing surrounded by elegant Qing dynasty furniture and ornaments including unusual asymmetrical display cabinets exotic bird swings and porcelain vases all standing or sitting on elaborately patterned silk carpets. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith often erroneously called 'rice paper' or 'mulberry pith' come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings and later the little glass-fronted boxes were inexpensive light easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom if ever measure more than about 30 by 20 cm. The sheets are dried trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect. Very fine detail could be achieved but pith did not lend itself to the flat wash of colour favoured for European watercolours. Carl Crossman in his book The Decorative Arts of the China Trade originally published under the title The China Trade gives an excellent list of export painters with a note of those known to have painted on pith. These include Tingqua Sunqua and Youqua. From 1757 until 1842 Canton was the only Chinese port open to trade with the west and it is no surprise that of the eight studios identified by Crossman as producing works on pith six were in Canton. It seems that the 1830s and 1840s may have been the heyday of pith painting. The international trading bases the waterfront 'factories' on the 'Hongs' in Canton where they were produced were partially burnt during the First Opium War 1839-41 and totally destroyed in a fire of 1856. The foreign trading companies then moved to Honan and subsequently put up splendid new offices on reclaimed land at Shamian Island a little up river. As the result of the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 additional Chinese ports were opened up for foreign trade and Hong Kong was established as a major trading centre. By 1860 references to China in the Illustrated London News plentiful three years earlier were few and far between. That is not to say that painting on pith ceased. Nicholas the second was given paintings on pith when he visited Canton in 1891 and the last Emperor is said to have sent him a gift which included pith paintings in 1907 though these could have been examples of much earlier work. Painters on pith did not in general sign their work the sole exception is Sunqua whose name can be found on the face of three paintings on pith. There are collections of paintings on pith in the Ashmolean the British Museum the Fitzwilliam the Hermitage the Peabody/Essex Museum in Massachusetts and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. However because paintings on pith are not in general regarded as fine art they are usually to be found in ethnographic or specialised collections. Canton, 2nd half of 19th century]. unknown

The Pearl River delta region then became the centre for China's commerce and export industry which gave a push to the development of an artisan industry. Numerous craftspersons and artists in Canton were commissioned to produce various artworks for the European market.
