First edition. A report of some significance in British aviation history produced for the Ministry of Aircraft Production by a committee chaired by the distinguished aeronautical engineer Sir Roy Fedden 1885-1973. 'From 1942 to 1945 Fedden was special adviser to the minister of aircraft production Sir R. Stafford Cripps. He created the technical advisory committee with the full approval of the Royal Aeronautical Society to which he was instructed to report back at the end of the war and was sent with a powerful team to North America to seek technology which might help the war effort. While he was studying American technical education an idea first came to him which had consequences of major importance. As a result of Fedden's persuasion Cripps set up an inter-departmental committee under Fedden's chairmanship to study the higher educational needs of the British aircraft industry. In October 1944 this produced what became known as the Fedden report. It recommended the creation of a postgraduate college of aeronautics which came into being at Cranfield in 1946 with Fedden on the board of governors until 1969. The college developed first as a major aviation establishment. In the late 1950s a policy of diversification began leading to a strong and broadly based advanced engineering faculty to a management school which became one of the leaders in its field and in 1969 to the grant of a royal charter: the college became the Cranfield Institute of Technology the only wholly postgraduate post-experience university in the country. Fedden was concerned with Cranfield from its first day to the end of his life. He supported it he worked for it he criticized it he loved it. It was the embodiment of his vision.'
