Dos rond avec titre et initiales du propriétaire, en pied, dorés. Coins et bords des plats avec petits frottements. Couverture non conservée. Intérioeur frais. Préface d'Armand Silvestre. Superbe eau-forte originale de Bracquemond en frontispice. Nombreuses illustrations en noir in et hors texte. Savoureux dictionnaire des termes argotiques utilisés au sein de l'Ecole Polytechnique publié à l'occasion de son centenaire. Notre exemplaire porte au verso de la page de garde l'étiquette d'appartenance de Charles Meunier et en regard une biographie manuscrite de ce dernier ( Peut-être de sa main ). Charles Meunier, né le 12 septembre 1869 à Saint-Brieuc ( Côtes-du-Nord ), ce dernier connu dans les milieux parlementaires sous le nom de Meunier-Surcouf, fut Député des Côtes-du-Nord de 1913 à 1919 puis Sénateur des Côtes-du-Nord de 1931 à 1939. Il fit ses études à l'Ecole polytechnique avec la promotion de 1889. Très actif pendant la guerre de 1914 uù il fut Capitaine d'Artillerie et officier d'ordonnance du Maréchal Foch. il fit la liaison avec Georges Clémenceau. Meunier-Surcouf fut aussi membre de la commission de l'armée, de la commission des marchés, de la commission de contrôle des questions ces projets se rattachant au ravitaillement et aux réquisitions. Il était officier de la Légion d'honneur, titulaire de la médaille militaire et de la croix de guerre. Edition originale imprimée le 10 mars 1894 et dont un second tirage paraîtra la même année chez Picard et Kaan. Superbe état général. Rare et précieux exemplaire du Député Charles Meunier, lui-même élève de l'École polytechnique promotion X 1889.

Title translates to Sixteen: A Collection of End Compositions of Sixteen Graduate of the Shalom Aleichem Elementary School in Chicago. Rare collection of elementary-age writings from secular-Yiddish Chicago but published in Warsaw. Yiddish schools in America were always supplemental schools, meeting several times a week after public schools. This was a major difference between the Yiddish schools in Poland which were, if chosen by the parents, the primary day school of the child, and the Yiddish schools in America which never developed a single Yiddish day school. On the political spectrum of the Yiddish cultural world in the 1920s and 1930s, the Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute and its schools, and the Yiddish camp, Camp Boiberik, were more to the right, with less emphasis on socialism and more stress on the humanistic values that can be learned from traditional Judaism and applied to the modern Jewish experience. Founded in 1918, the Institute lasted until the 1970s, and was a national movement which attained its greatest support in the 1930s (UTexas, 2017) . Nazareth PA: Class of 1941 Nazareth High School 1941. Hardcover. Good/None. Red cloth boards 8 x 10 3/4 ins. worn at corners and ends of spine. Binding is sound though spine is shaky if you test it otherwise not noticeable. Two whitish drip stains on front cover. Owner's name E. Barrall twice on prelim pages one of those with city state; only other mark found is blue ink parens around a short poem by B. Roth. Red ink bled onto upper and lower first prelim page and spotty on outer page edges probably from the end papers. Each of the B&W student photos sports a caption with verve such as for Bessie S. the all-around fun-loving lassie or Benjamin S. who has little interest in school except for the Popular Mechanics magazines he borrows from the library. Virginia K. hopes to become someone's secretary. The editors seem often bemused by their subjects' love interests: one sandy-haired blue-eyed female senior is quite interested in the opposite sex and her choices are as changeable as the moon. Even if the reader isn't pictured in the book it is now a nostalgic look at the hairstyles clothing and other standards of a small Ohio town in the early 1950s. . Good.
