Agli inizi del secolo scorso Virginia Woolf chiedeva con "Una stanza tutta per sé" uno spazio autonomo e una rendita per le donne come primi requisiti per diventare indipendenti e soddisfatte. Qualche anno dopo Marion Milner, una psicoterapeuta inglese, esigeva di più e voleva "Una vita tutta per sé". Inizia così la fortunata vicenda di un libro, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1934 e premiato da un immediato successo, tanto che le ristampe si susseguono fino ai nostri giorni. Scoprendosi a disagio, frustrata e scontenta a dispetto di una vita apparentemente risolta, Marion Milner si mette risolutamente alla ricerca di un criterio personale dei valori che la renda capace di seguire i propri desideri e, per quanto possibile, realizzarli. L'originalità di questo percorso sta nel fatto che Milner, pur essendone al corrente, non si avvale di tecniche psicoanalitiche riconosciute, né cerca nei testi già pubblicati delle formule collaudate ma si mette ad ascoltare attentamente il proprio sentire, lo trascrive in un diario, lo esamina senza ipocrisie e ne trae delle conclusioni decisive per il cambiamento desiderato. Avventurandosi coraggiosamente in una terra inesplorata, l'autrice non esita ad affrontare momenti di delusione, paure rimosse, e esitazioni irrazionali, passaggi inevitabili verso una migliore comprensione di se stessi e verso il raggiungimento di insperate vittorie.‎

La filosofia del libro è dunque riportare per iscritto la trentennale esperienza di didattica e supervisone dell'autore.
