‎The Le Fleming family of Rydal Hall. 16 manuscript items from the family papers of Barbara Le Fleming Benson sister of Sir Daniel Fleming including material relating to a disputed will miscellaneous correspondence and genealogical memoranda.‎

‎Carlisle; Kendal; Crosthwaite; New Mills near Stockport; Douglas Isle of Man; St Bees Grammar School Cumbria. Between 1813 and 1874. The Le Flemings of Rydal Hall were a leading Cumbrian family notable as the landlords of the poet William Wordsworth. The present collection of 15 items derive from the family papers of Barbara Le Fleming eldest child of Roger and Ann Fleming and sister of Sir Daniel le Fleming c.1785-1821 5th Baronet who married John Benson 1780-1830 in 1809. The first five items listed below concern the 'bone of Contention' that was the will of Daniel Fleming; the next six are miscellaneous items including three letters to Mrs Benson and a banking bill; and the last five items contain material relating to family history. The collection is in fair overall condition on aged and worn paper. SECTION A: Correspondence relating to the Will of Daniel Fleming 1835-1838. Five items. ONE: John Benson to 'Dear Barbara Benson'. Carlisle; 16 November 1835. Explaining that 'the Rydal money is still a bone of Contention' and giving his reasons for objecting to a proposition put forward by her brother's son. TWO: W. N. Hodgson to Mrs Benson. Carlisle; 28 March 1836. Advising her to accept 'a small sum' rather than 'run the risk of wasting a large portion of the money in legal proceedings'. With transcript of letter to him 'for Mr. Capes by J Stuart' Grays Inn London; 27 February 1836 'Re Sir D. Fleming deced'. THREE: Edward Tatham solicitor to Mrs Benson. Kendal; 28 April 1838. 'I learn that Mr Harrison is supposed to have taken the money or some of the money which was agreed to be divided but that you are not on some account considered in strictness to be entitled to any part. However be this as it may as it should seem the sum you have expected to receive was to arrive from the effects of the late Mr Daniel Fleming Mr. Carlyle as his sole Executor is the proper person to apply to for it.' FOUR: Rev. Irving Carlyle to Mrs Barbara Benson. New Mills near Stockport; 28 June 1837. 'I am the Sole Acting Executor of the late Mr. Daniel Fleming . the Executors of your Brother the late Sir Daniel Fleming have entered into an amicable agreement with me as to the disposal of the £2500 referred into sic your letter and which was awarded to the late Mr. Daniel Fleming by a decree of the Court of Chancery. By this arrangement it has been agreed that after the payment of debts and expenses you are to receive one sixth equal share of the said £2500'. With letter to her from James Burrow. Sending presents for her 'Sir Joseph Senhouse and Mr. Hamilton' and describing how 'Michael' has taken 'a prize into Port viz Bermuda they have got a French Vessel call'd the Martin' and expressing sadness at 'the Death of poor Senhouse Wilson who <was in> the Navy'. SEVEN: W. F. Grayson to Mrs Benson. Douglas; 4 April 1837. Urging her to apply for the post of the recently-deceased 'Mr John Grave who has conducted the Post Office here for 30 years & a most worthy man'. With signed autograph copy of reply by Barbara Benson describing her indisposition and that of her husband. EIGHT: Christopher Hodgson to Mrs Benson at 8 Wood St Toxteth Liverpool. ‎Japan. Circa 1930. 37 black and white photographs presented in an accordion album 26.5 x 19cm 20pp 2 loose black and white photographs 18.2 x 25.5cm 14.7 x 10.2cm some wear and a few photographs missing but the photographs are generally in good to very good condition. This family photograph album brings out various aspects of a military personnel in Japan. It starts with a letter written by a serviceman who was stationed in China to most likely the owner of this album Kusaka Tadao 日下忠夫 who lived in Wakayama Prefecture. The letter was written in pencil and is difficult to decipher. The pages of one side of the album are filled with the photographs of a wedding: bride and bridegroom attendees and the wedding venue. Probably the most interesting photographs are the four showing the interior of what appears to be the wedding location. The exterior photograph of the well-to-do house is accompanied by another showing beautiful Japanese garden. Following the wedding photographs are other family photographs which were taken at celebratory occasions such as starting military service or during the holidays and visits to temples and shrines. One group photograph was taken at Futamigaura near Ise Shrine. <br> <br>A primary school graduation photograph was taken to mark the graduation at Kane Ordinary Primary School 河根尋常小学校 in Ito County in Wakayama Prefecture near Koyasan. The photograph was taken by M. Okada Photographic Studio. It was a small class with a dozen pupils or so with teaching staff. A young woman who is sitting on the first row lower left has a distinctive hair style and it might indicate that the photograph was taken around the beginning of the 20th century. The owner's name Imoto Masako appears on reverse. A loose formal photographic portrait features a young non-commissioned officer of the Japanese Imperial Navy in his uniform and hat. A large collection of 807 photographs providing a unique view into the private life of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan 1918-2004 ruler of Abu Dhabi and founding father of the United Arab Emirates. The photographs depict Sheikh Zayed and his family including Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan b. 1948 relatives and friends partaking in various leisure activities. Also included are some photographs of children probably including Sheikh Zayed's sons possibly Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan b. 1961. The pictures date from a significant period in the history of Abu Dhabi the years leading up to the foundation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971 and from the earliest years of the new federation.A group of pictures is possibly taken in Pakistan many depicting a large manor where a party arrives by helicopter. Sheikh Zayed enjoyed visiting the country to go horse riding and hunting with his falcons. Many photographs depict casual dinner parties gatherings and meetings in the open air. ‎Carbon Typescript Autobiography of Howard Talbot Jason and His Jason Family Bible With Informative Manuscript Records on the Family's History and Seven Contemporary Photographs‎

Two pages with long corrected sections stapled to original leaves occasional emendations in type. Minor edge wear. Very good. Family Bible: various paginations plus numerous plates and with seven 19th-century photographs at rear in the "Family Portraits" section. Square folio. Original black leather and gutta percha stamped in gilt and blind. Some scuffing edge wear and soiling to boards. Occasional soiling and wear internally with some portions of text and portrait pages at rear chipped and/or detached. Rear hinge separated. Good condition. An amazing collection consisting of a carbon typescript of a previously unknown and unpublished autobiography a family Bible with manuscript notations and original photographs memorializing Howard Talbot Jason and his family. The Jasons were a prominent African American family in Maryland and Delaware in the 19th and 20th centuries whose members included prominent ministers physicians and educators. Howard Talbot Jason 1867-1955 was educated at the oldest HBCU in the country Pennsylvania's Lincoln University and worked as an educator Presbyterian missionary and minister.<br /> <br /> Much more will now be known about Howard Talbot Jason due to the present typescript autobiography. From contextual clues the work was evidently transcribed by his daughter Grace Jason Perry likely from Howard's handwritten original which may still reside within the Jason family or more likely has been lost to history. Howard's autobiography begins with his birth in Easton Maryland and some background information on his slave-born father William. Sadly Howard had "no particular remembrance" of his mother who died when he was six. He then details some events of his childhood his early working life as a waiter fisherman laborer and barber his education at "a school for colored boys not far from my town of Hockessin Delaware" and Lincoln University and his time serving as a missionary in Puerto Rico where among other things he experiences "Jim Crowism". In fact Howard's autobiography is mostly concerned with his time at Lincoln and his missionary work in Puerto Rico when his account concludes unfinished and in mid-sentence on page 34. A few notes from his daughter Grace are typed out on the last page as she has "not been able to figure out just where this belongs in Dad's autobiography." The work covers Howard Talbot Jason's life from birth to about 1905 constituting roughly the first half of his life. We know of no other extant copies of this autobiography though we cannot count out the possibility that other examples may reside with Jason family descendants. In any case the emergence of this work provides a phenomenal new understanding of an important African American figure in Maryland and Delaware.<br /> <br /> The autobiography is accompanied by an informative family Bible kept by various members of the prominent Jason family namely Howard Talbot Jason. The Bible was gifted to Howard Talbot Jason in 1894 by his father William Jason evidenced by the gift inscription on the front flyleaf. Three pages between the Old and New Testaments listing details of marriages births and deaths provide critical information on the Jason family beginning with the marriage of William Jason 1831-1929 and Mary E. Wing 1839-1873 on December 16 1858. Three other marriages are recorded between 1883 and 1894. The "Births" page records the birthdays of nine members of the Jason family between 1831 and 1872. The next page records the deaths of ten Jason family members between 1866 and 1955 the latter being the death of the aforementioned Howard Talbot Jason. The Jasons lived around Easton and Trappe Maryland and later in other locations in Delaware and Pennsylvania.<br /> <br /> In addition to the life details of the various Jason family members the Bible also houses seven 19th-century photographs in the rear. This includes six CDVs and one tintype featuring five men and two women almost certainly picturing Jason family members. Most are housed securely inside oval windows but two display photographic studio information both from Philadelphia photographers. One of the photographs seems to picture William C. Jason Sr. 1859-1943. He appears to be the most notable among the family members here. William C. Jason Sr. was a barber and printer in his youth then later a Methodist minister educator and second president of Delaware's State College for Colored Students now known as Delaware State University. He is also the namesake of Jason Beach a formerly-segregated stretch of recreational shoreline for African Americans located in Trap Pond State Park outside Laurel Delaware where there is a historical marker about him.<br /> <br /> The Bible was apparently retained by a member of the family after Howard Talbot Jason who provides an additional notation in more modern blue ballpoint ink beneath the original gift inscription stating that "Howard Talbot Jason also had three brothers named William Ernest and Alonzo." This same family member also laid in a note about various siblings of Lena Bertha Wright Jason dated in 1989 a substantial collection of her personal papers reside at Harvard. Family Bibles retained by African-American families in the 19th and 20th centuries are rarely encountered in the marketplace. And though marked as a copy it is possible even likely that the typescript of Howard Talbot Jason's life is a unique survival of an as-yet-unknown African American autobiography. unknown‎

‎Various locations 1970. Good plus. 48 leaves illustrated with 260 mounted photographs most black-and-white but some in color between 1.5 x 1.5 to 8 x 10 inches and a few ephemeral items. Full brown pebbled leather photograph album screw-bound. Moderate edge wear and some chipping front joint split but holding. First leaf detached moderate wear throughout. An absorbing collection of vernacular photographs documenting multiple generations of the Piper family an African-American family from New York City. This family album captures Piper family members from babies to grandparents over the course of about forty years. Numerous images show family and friends with the men posed in fine suits and fedoras and the women in dresses and gloves. Several pictures feature African American men in military uniforms both Army and Navy including an image of a World War II soldier signed "Sincerely Kenny 1942." There are also numerous shots of the family hamming it up for the camera in various houses while in sitting rooms or at the dinner table. A couple of the larger photographs feature family groupings including a bride groom and four family members at a wedding in the 1960s or '70s. A handful of shots capture the Pipers while traveling showing them posed in remote locations outside their car or near train stations. One identifiable location they visited is the St. Joseph statue in front of the Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal. And dozens of photographs feature subjects posed on the streets of New York.<br /> <br /> Laid into the album is a "Memorandum of Charges" for the funeral expenses of George Piper; the only ephemeral item pasted into the album is a humble typed card reading "In God's Care George R. Piper 1897-1973." This card is the last item pasted into the album. Also laid into the album is a single letter from Joseph Piper of Hollywood to James Piper of New York City dated May 15 1973 which also includes a few photographic negatives. This letter also relates to the death of George Piper. <br /> <br /> Though uncaptioned the present collection of photographs provides a deep look into an African American family from New York City encompassing the middle few decades of the 20th century. unknown‎

Piere-Paul had become Binder to the King in 1758. The recipient of this book was the archbishop of Auch the bibliophile Claude Marc Antoine d'Apchon 1721-1783. His library comprised specimens of all genres and sciences. ‎Intéressant courrier concernant une affaire qui a conduit le sieur de Bretagne en prison à Bar sur Seine.‎

‎Troyes, 18 avril 1724, 3p in-4. Longue et intéressante lettre adressée à un Monseigneur qui est vraisemblablement un magistrat, puisqu'il lui dit « votre tribunal ». Elle est signée Molé, probablement de la célèbre famille Molé de Troyes, bien que la branche principale soit alors éteinte on y en trouve encore quelques Molé alors, et il semble que ce Molé soit l'avocat du sieur de Bretagne, qui est Edme-Jean de Bretagne, seul Bretagne dont on trouve alors la trace dans l'Aube et qui est d'Avirey, commune mentionnée dans la lettre. Molé avance les preuves de la bonne foi de Bretagne : il s'est rendu de lui-même en prison à Bar-sur-Seine, il a un certificat pour justifier de sa maladie et il a le témoignage de l'ancien curé d'Avirey, qui ne « peut être suspect à votre tribunal ». On comprend, par cette lettre, que la famille de Coningant attaque Bretagne qui, selon eux, n'est pas seigneur d'Avirey, alors que Molé présente des papiers qui le prouvent. Cette famille de Coningant a plusieurs orthographes pour son nom, et usuellement, on trouve surtout Conygham ou Conigant. Cette famille était alors bien établie à Avirey. En conclusion : il y a eu une transaction pour la seigneurie d'Avirey entre la famille Conigant et la famille Bretagne, avant 1713, et en 1724, le sieur de Conigant conteste cette transaction. Intéressant courrier.‎

Later 19th century Hardcover / Half - leather with gilt lettering and ornament to spine. Good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Spine slightly damaged and broken. Bookblock tight and clean besides a faded dampstain and some lesions to outer margiuns of several pages. Needs some attention from a bookbinder. Exlibris / Bookplate of Henry J.B.Clements on pastedown Clements was landowner in County Mayo and County Galway Rosshill House connection. The book is a collection of memoirs that document the exploits of one of the most charismatic and influential families in 16th and 17th century Irish history. Chapters include for example: Richard Cromwell Baffles the Designs of Fleetwood / His advice to Richard Cromwell / Richard deposed / Lord Broghill retires to his command in Munster and is suspected by the Committee of Safety / Summoned to appear before the Commissioners in Dublin / Brings over the Army in Ireland to the King's Interest and invites the King to land at Cork / He and Sir Charles Coote declares openly for the King and secure Ireland / Taken into the Cabinet Council and made one of the Lords Justices of Ireland / etc. Eustace Budgell 19 August 1686 – 4 May 1737 was an English writer and politician. Born in St Thomas near Exeter Budgell was educated at Oxford University. His cousin the writer Joseph Addison took him to Ireland and got him appointed to a lucrative office. However when he lampooned the Viceroy he lost his position. Budgell assisted Addison with his magazine The Spectator writing 37 numbers signed X. In these he imitates Addison's style with some success. Between 1715 and 1727 he represented Mullingar in the Irish House of Commons. Budgell who was vain and vindictive fell on evil days; he lost a fortune in the South Sea Bubble and was accused of forging the will of Dr Matthew Tindal at the expense of his nephew Nicolas Tindal. He committed suicide by throwing himself out of a boat at London Bridge. His suicide note famously said: "What Cato did and Addison approved cannot be wrong." Wikipedia. hardcover‎

‎Dunedin Lodge Edgewater Court Dunedin Florida c.1900‎

‎Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued. Yarn tied wraps lettered in gilt ; 5.75 by 9 inches; 8 pages with a double page photo panorama of the lodge from offshore; sketch of the lodge; floor plans of the three levels; map. wrappers lettered in gold string tie. Light handling wear first page is foxed and remaining are lightly and evenly age-toned.<br /> <br /> Charming little brochure of which no copies are listed in OCLC. Dunedin is on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Tampa Bay. The Dunedin Lodge was run by two sisters Lydia and Matilda who were part of the Bull family and related to A.J. Grant. Every year they opened the lodge for guests from September through May offering a warm retreat during the cooler months. When summer rolled around they headed back to Cape May New Jersey where they owned a private home and another lodge for beachgoers.<br /> <br /> The lodge sat just south of Edgewater Park with its entrance facing the street. Interestingly when the building was renovated all the spacious luxurious rooms ended up on the street-facing side. Meanwhile the best bay views-along with stunning sunsets-were on the same side as the kitchen and housekeeping areas meaning the staff actually got the best scenery every evening!<br /> <br /> Because hospitals were few and far between back then midwives sometimes used the lodge as a birthing center for local families when home deliveries weren't an option.<br /> <br /> During the 1940s the lodge took on a new role becoming the Marine Corps headquarters for officers and non-commissioned officers stationed in Dunedin. These troops were training with Amphibious Alligator Tanks near the marine base by Cedar Creek.<br /> <br /> By the late 1960s though the lodge had seen better days. With newer motels and hotels popping up in the area it fell into disrepair and was eventually sold in the early 1970s. The land became part of the first phase of the Edgewater Arms condominiums. Today most of the former lodge's property is now part of Edgewater Park's playground a parking lot for the marina's boat ramp and garages for residential parking. Binding broken with staining on cover. Photographs generally very good to excellent contrast with a portion at the end significantly faded. Overall very good. Scrapbook of photographs mainly showing home life and recreation of a family with young children in central California in the early 1900s. The family spend time playing with their children in the yard going to the beach and hiking in the woods. There are also several snaps of buildings at Stanford University shortly after their construction. Of interest as a depiction of everyday life in turn-of-the-century California. unknown‎

‎Virginia Estate; emigration from England Part of a Manuscript Letter written from Carter Hall Millwood Clarke County Virginia to an Englishman intending to emigrate to America discussing various elements of life there including dress‎

‎Carter Hall Millwood Clarke County Virginia. 21 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. 210 lines. The first bifolium of a letter only and hence lacking a signature. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper with closed tears along fold lines. George Burwell who had inherited Carter Hall in 1814 see below had died three years before the writing of this letter and the identity of its author is unknown although he does claim to be a 'Scotchman'. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir Your letter of Jany 31 is received. I am glad to answer any questions but I must not be supposed to advise you in any thing regarding a change of residence. No man can think for another and <> I can only give true replies to any questions upon you must lie the onus of exhaustive questioning. - Again do not forget that I can speak only of the district - circumstances alter much in various places.' He asks him to bring out 'a parcel or two from England when you come'. There follow six numbered sections discussing various elements of life in Virginia beginning with the climate: 'July & August are our hottest months. Your families should arrive in Baltimore at about Sept 15. The temperature at Baltimore will probably be about 75o or 80o all the time from Aug 15 to Sept 15'. The second section discusses 'habitation' and employment. In section 3 he describes 'grass land' as 'much inferior to England '. Section 4: 'I mean to imply that a good farmer in a fair farm here will do as well as a tenant at home who pays rent - & I take into consideration that in capital of 5/ in so calculating.' Section 5 is on 'Sheep'. Section 6 begins: 'Men & boys were strong hollands in summer - poor people wear vests except on Sunday - as a rule you get these things better & cheaper here - than in England'. A long discussion of dress for both men and women follows 'Summer prints for ladies are good & cheap here - no use to bring them - they are called calicoes here But muslines grenadines too are dearer here and should be brought out'. Other topics include 'household stores': 'We find it quite expedient to get out the following articles - as their representatives here are either bad or too dear English mustard Worcester sauce Scotch marmalade Tea - oatmeal for my boys breakfast - I am a Scotchman sago tapioca curry powder canary seed if you have a bird'. Also 'Medicines' 'Seeds'. 'Bring no harness or carriages - There is nothing in Gt. Britain to equal the carriages in this country . I may advise you to go to Phipps Saddlers Holborn London who will give you saddles exactly like mine - cheaper & equal in leather to any in England - his bridles are first class also.' The letter ends with advice on 'hunting spurs' and 'thong'. Carter Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A grand house and plantation located in the lower Shenandoah River valley it was the estate of the family of Lieut-Col. Nathaniel Burwell 1750-1814. It was also a home for Burwell's cousin Edmund Randolph who had been United States Attorney General and later Secretary of State under George Washington. George Burwell 1799-1873 inherited the estate in 1814 and added a large portico. It served as headquarters for Stonewall Jackson during part of the American Civil War and was raided and sacked by Union troops during the war.
