Sans avoir une portée aussi vaste, le travail présenté par M. le Professeur Claude Renard complète fort heureusement celui de son prédécesseur, en tenant compte des lois nouvelles allemande et hollandaise et des projets pendants devant le Parlement belge et devant le Parlement français. Mais l’auteur n’a pas voulu faire un simple exposé des législations et des projets. Il a tenu à faire magistralement œuvre de science par l’examen critique des solutions admises ou proposées, et plus encore par les réflexions qu’il émet dans une première partie et dans une conclusion générale, sur les notions qui interviennent nécessairement à la base de tout régime matrimonial et sur le sens de l’évolution actuelle. (…) Quel que soit le jugement qu’on porte sur les opinions de l’auteur, on ne peut s’empêcher d’admirer la maîtrise avec laquelle il a présenté ce travail de droit comparé et les réflexions pertinentes et très personnelles dont il accompagne son exposé. GIDEON REYNOLDS 1813-96 was a member of the N.Y. State Assembly in 1839 Sherriff of Rensselaer County 1843-46 Member of Congress 1847-51 was a delegate at the first Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in 1856 and a member of the Republican State Central Commiittee. He was appointed by Lincoln as Internal Revenue Collector of the 15th District of New York and in 1867 he became a Democrat.¶ Stephen Potter was one of the early settlers of Petersburgh as was Stephen Card probably the father of saidWilliam. Petersburgh formerly "Rensselaer Mills" was created from Stephentown in 1791. Many of the first settlers were Dutch who came over in about 1750 as tenants under Van Rensselaer. unknown books

pleine basane brune, tit. doré sur dos à 6 nerfs richement orné de quatre filets soulignant, fleurons et dentelles florales dors, chants de plat orné de roulette dorée, ex-libris manuscrit, p. d. t. en rouge et noir, culs-de-lampe et lettrines, (épidermures sur les plats, qq. trous de ver isolés, mors sup. fendu sur 26 cm, mq. de cuir sur les plats, coiffes accidentées avec mq., coins émoussés, papier acidifié en début d’ouvrage), int. frais (Dupin n° 1519). L’auteur (1623-1699) consacra l’essentiel de ses œuvres au droit de la famille. Elles connurent un succès considérable dans leur diffusion par traités séparés au point qu’au moment où la mode éditoriale était à la réunion des œuvres des grands jurisconsultes il fut naturel de les réunir, au même titre que celles de Loyseau, Ricard ou Le Brun. Ce traité, comme celui de Pothier sur le même sujet (v. supra) permet de décrire un des éléments importants de la soumission juridique de la femme dans l’ancien droit.
