Whitney family Whitney Harry Payne Flora William C.
Collection of 32 Autograph Letters signed & one Brady photo including a 4 pp. Autograph Letter signed from W.C. Whitney to his son Harry about attending Harvard instead of Yale addressed to him at Groton c/o Rev. Endicott Peabody dated Sept. 21 1888 "you must not be influenced by your mother about such things. If I had graduated at Trinity she is so sentimental she wd think it was the place for you."; a 10pp. letter from Flora Payne Whitney to Harry from Jacksonville March 26 1886 about "alligators"; a 4 pp. letter from Flora To Harry at Groton Sept. 20 1885 - probably her first letter to him at Groton
Various places 1890. 1 vols. 8vo. Generally in very good condition several with their original envelopes. 1 vols. 8vo. The letters are mostly from Harry's mother Flora Payne Whitney with a few from his father William C. Whitney including a rather poignant one in which he expresses his sorrow and distress that Harry had made up his mind to go to Yale rather than Harvard as WCW had hoped. "Yale is narrow.I am awfully disappointed-more than I can say." Flora's letters generally strike a more cheerful note-she relates news of the family and her travels and social doings-she appears to have had a very busy time in Washington entertaining with balls and parties and receptions of a thousand people. She shows the usual motherly concern for Harry's welfare "I do love your letters only they terrify me when they paint so vividly the dangers of tobogganing" and her letters include references to clothes "you will have to wait for your long pants vest and high collar" family Christmas presents the neighbors "I have not looked out of my window in time to see the Vanderbilts off to school with their books" and her hopes for her son "I want you to be very ambitious and work hard." There are letters from Flora to WCW and a couple of affectionate ones from him to her all written when one was in New York and the other in Washington as well as a letter from Flora to her mother and a few others. It is clear that Harry is the apple of his parents' eye-his father alludes to Harry's 'strength of character" and apart from Flora's social news the family appears as a happy ordinary one of no special consequence. It is only when one recalls the reality of the situation that one realizes how remarkable these letters really are. UNIQUE. unknown

Wild Family
Correspondence and Papers of the family of Brig. Gen. Edward Augustus Wild of Brookline Massachusetts concerning his will and estate 1844-1913

80 letters 147 manuscript and typed pages dated 23 March 1844 to 11 December 1913 the bulk of the material dating from the 1890s pertaining to the settlement of the estate of Brig. Gen. Edward Augustus Wild by attorneys and/or bankers Horace R. Bailey and George S. Hale both of Boston Massachusetts; Arthur Cushing of Providence Rhode Island; and Samuel W. Ray of Port Arthur Ont. Canada.

Brig. Gen. Edward Augustus Wild 1825-1891

Edward Augustus Wild was born on 25 November 1825. Wild was a native of Brookline Massachusetts the second son of homeopath Dr. Charles Wild 1795-1864 and his wife Mary Joanna Rhodes 1799-1883. Edward earned his medical degree in 1846 from Harvard and at Jefferson Medical College and he also studied homeopathy becoming a member of the Massachusetts Society of Homeopathy. Wild then traveled and studied medicine in Paris France.

Wild practiced alongside his father as a homeopathic physician in Brookline until 1855 when he and his new wife traveled to Turkey. On 12 June 1855 he was married in Boston to Frances Ellen Sullivan 1829-1923. Wild joined the Ottoman Army as a medical officer and served in the Crimean War. He then returned to Massachusetts and resumed his medical practice.

At the outbreak of the Civil War Wild enlisted in the Union Army as a front-line officer preferring to command troops rather than to treat their injuries. He served as a captain in Company A of the 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry from May 1861 until July 1862. He fought in First Battle of Bull Run and again in the Peninsula Campaign where he was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines. On August 21 he was appointed Colonel of the 35th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and assigned to the Army of the Potomac's IX Corps. Wild led his new regiment into combat during the Maryland Campaign. At the Battle of South Mountain Wild suffered another severe wound one that necessitated the amputation of his left arm. He returned home to recuperate.

By April 1863 Wild had recovered enough to resume his military duties and was promoted to brigadier general on April 24 and assigned to recruiting duties. A fervent abolitionist he aggressively recruited black soldiers for the United States Colored Troops and helped recruit white officers to lead them he assisted Robert Gould Shaw fill his officer complement for the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Wild was a friend of fellow abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe and enlisted her half-brother James C. Beecher as a white officer in one of the new black regiments. When Wild was able to resume his field duties he freed hundreds of slaves in North Carolina resettled them safely on Roanoke Island in North Carolina and then recruited many of them to join the military.

Wild took command of a brigade of black infantry that soon became known as "Wild's African Brigade". The brigade headquartered in Norfolk comprised the 55th Massachusetts Infantry and the 2nd and 3rd North Carolina Colored Volunteers which were later re-numbered as the 36th and 37th U.S. Colored Troops respectively. Wild's men served in the Charleston South Carolina area and saw action in numerous skirmishes and battles in that region including an expedition to South Mills and Camden Court House in December.

Transferred to the Army of the Potomac in 1864 Wild and his African American troops participated in the Overland Campaign and the subsequent Siege of Petersburg Wild's men constructed and manned Fort Pocahontas an earthen-walled Virginia fort on the James River that during the Battle of Wilson's Wharf withstood an attack on May 24 by Fitzhugh Lee's Confederates.

In early 1865 Wild's men performed picket duty along the Appomattox River. They were a part of the large force of black troops under Godfrey Weitzel that occupied the former Confederate national capital Richmond Virginia holding that city through the end of the war. Wild's men were among those troops who witnessed the historic visit of President Abraham Lincoln to Richmond following the city's fall to the Union forces.

In July Wild ordered and supervised the torture of several members of the Chennault family in Danburg Georgia. Suspecting them of being involved in the missing Confederate gold he had their hands tied behind their backs and their thumbs strung up. In the case of one of the prisoners this caused the flesh to be stripped from the bones. Members of his unit forced the Chennault ladies to disrobe in search of "stolen" jewelry. Wild was honorably discharged in January 1866 receiving no punishment for his actions which appear to have measured up to war crimes.

After the war Wild could no longer practice medicine because of his war injuries. He engaged in silver mining in Nevada as a superintendent of operations. He operated in the Diana Mine now part of the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park near Austin. He traveled extensively in South America.

Settlement of Edward A. Wild's Estate

Edward A. Wild died on 28 August 1891 in MedellÃn Colombia and was buried in the city's Cementerio de San Pedro. Due to Wild having residences in different countries and different states in the United States and financial interests in different companies and countries the settling of his estate was a bit more complicated than others thus the involvement of Arthur Cushing an attorney and nephew of Wild Hollis R. Bailey a prominent attorney of Boston and George S. Hale a noted lawyer who specialized in equity and trusts and possibly also a Wild family friend and Samuel W. Ray a Canadian based financier and businessman with background in mining and finances who with Wild were owners of mining lands in Thunder Bay Canada. Wild at one point also had mining interests in Nevada and Colorado.

The Wild estate was divided up amongst his wife Frances Ellen Wild and his surviving siblings and their children. The estate included mining lands in Canada real estate in Brookline and Boston Massachusetts some personal property in California cash Canadian railroad bonds pension due to Mrs. Wild allowances for Mrs. Wild until the case is settled etc. Mrs. Wild's attorney was George S. Hale Wild's siblings' attorney was Hollis R. Bailey with Arthur Cushing looking out for his mother Mary Heath Wild the General's sister and Samuel W. Ray looking out for the Canadian property and Canadian railroad bonds. The widow Mrs. Wild contested the will wanting to set aside the provisions of the will thus causing a legal battle between mother and children. Mrs. Wild was left most of the estate as a "life estate" but she was interested in getting some of it as an "absolute estate" thus causing problems for the other heirs.

The estate also had other problems which caused difficulties there was trouble valuating the railroad bonds. Samuel W. Ray possessed Wild's final Will in Canada. Wild died in Columbia and was buried there. The heirs were mostly in Massachusetts. All of the Bailey Cushing Hale and Ray's correspondence concern the Wild estate in particular the mining lands in Canada and their potential sale offers and options they had the Canadian railroad bonds the division and sale of real estate in Massachusetts attempts to determine the legal residence of General Wild etc.

Sample Quotes:

"Medellin Antioquia Columbia South America Sept. 3 1891

Mrs. E. A. Wild

Boston Mass.

Dear Mrs. Wild

It is with grief and sadness that I write to you of the death of your husband. It occurred at 10 minutes past one A.M Friday Aug. 28 when he passed peacefully from sleep to eternity.

The immediate cause of death was a persistent diarrhea that had lasted for some time and apparently wore him out.

The General seemed to enjoy the trip very much from the time of leaving New York until our arrival in Puerto Berrio even the Madalena River although that part of the trip was tedious: did not complain much of the heat and spent the time pleasantly with his fellow passengers. The trip thus far seemed to do him good. The Mule ride from Pavas to this place seemed to tire him considerably – for the first three days he stood it better than many of us but on the fourth day it see3med to tire him very much. The last twenty-nine miles were made in a carriage. We made the stages of the trip short and took four days to do what is usually done in two and half to three days.

After a couple of days rest here the General seemed to be about as well as usual went round with us and enjoyed the sights especially two collections or museums. Four weeks ago last Sunday we spent the whole afternoon looking at the best collections in town. The General was very much pleased and enjoyed it very much.

About three weeks ago the General complained of not being very well felt an oppression in his bowels said it was from the effect of the old fall he had in Port Arthur coupled with the shaking of the Mule ride. He decided to loosen the clothing round his waist and wear suspenders which he did. He seemed to feel the change immediately. It was about this time the diarrhea commenced slightly which he decided was good to restore his bowels to proper condition and consequently did not attempt to check it.

Two weeks ago last Thursday I needed to be absent for a few days and left the General with his consent feeling fairly well except for his bowels. A fellow passenger Mr. Frasquieri occupied the next room and was very friendly with the General and spoke Spanish and English so I knew that he would be looked after and his wants translated. I returned the following Wednesday the 19th Aug and found the General sick in bed with severe diarrhea and quite weak. I wished then to call in medical advice but the General would not allow me. At this desire I got a night chair made so that he could use his syringe which seemed to give him great comfort. The chair was made so that he could use the syringe Friday evening and he took a warm water injection nightly for six nights. After the first two nights they seemed to check the diarrhea somewhat but he still continued weak and could not take much nourishment what he took was principally scaled milk with an egg beaten up in it and a little brandy or run added. He liked that very much and took it three times a day varied with beef-tea milk toast toast and water rice water rice milk etc. Last Tuesday week he thought it might be better not to take so much spirits and varied the stimulant to Champagne of which we could get some very good. This with the nourishment he took seemed to make him better and stronger but last Thursday he seemed to be weak as ever and the diarrhea increased. I then again urged I had done so repeatedly in the intervening time the calling of medical advice and after a little he consented. I called Dr. Zuleta a man about twenty-eight or thirty years old who had graduated in New York and has a very good reputation here. So soon as he saw the General he said that he was in a very dangerous condition and wanted additional advice so he called in Drs. Perez and Arango two of the best physicians in the city. They agreed with him and said the General might die before morning which was a great shock to me and I did not and could not believe them. They gave the General a rubbing all over with alcohol hypodermic injections of caffeine &c. and a little champagne every fifteen minutes until he went to sleep. Dr. Zuleta staid up in the hotel all night and Mr. Frasquieri and I together watched the General. I gave him the last spoonful of champagne he took about eleven o'clock Thursday night. He then went to sleep and according to the Dr's orders I did not wake the General to give him anything. The General continued in this sleep until ten minutes past one when his breathing suddenly ceased and he passed away without a struggle…Anthony Jones"

"Phila'd Sept 4th 2029 Delancey Place

Dearest Mollie

Your letter reached me today a few hours since & this of Ellen's followed so quickly it was stunning & yet I am grateful for the short preparation yours was to me & its few lines of what to me was a hope then. I sent it off the moment I read it through only waiting to read the lovely heartfelt letter of Mrs. Jones it went to my very soul her sentences of sympathy & encouragement to Ellen. I shall write a few lines to tell her as I have written to her once before. I feel sure she has anxiety for her position in the future for why should Mr. Jones have Malaria too at some time in his wanderings.

I cannot tell you how glad how grateful I am this news found me here instead of Idlewild they arranged me so to stay longer & Emma with me begging me on two occasions to remain & not come home to be alone something made me resist it all & now I cannot be grateful enough to meet this in my own house away from the 70 people at Idlewild…

I did not anticipate this in the least. I felt only for the first how much he would enjoy & it would take him out of Canada. My horror for him. I felt his knowledge of medicine & his former experience of Malaria would be such a protection that he would use antidotes &c. it only proves how utterly unable a physician is capable of taking care of himself that horrid mule traveling & yet dear sister we must look this matter in the face in the right manner when we think what he has gone through in this life & survived it all it must now be the will of our Heavenly Father & bitter as it is to meet it all at this time shall we question the love & mercy that has desired it all so different from what we could wish…Susan S. Wild Wood"

"Swampscott Sunday Sept. 6 1891

Dear Mary

There have been no more telegrams from Medellin. Edw. Atkinson telegraphed Mr. Jones for me that I wished the burial t be in Medellin. I afterwards thought how I could better carry out Edward's wishes in case he had not given Mr. Jones directions. So I telegraphed Mrs. Jones to telegraph her husband for me 'Autopsy burial in Medellin.'

Edward told me many years ago that he wished his body kept for a week before burial.

Since the loss of his arm an amputation 'few survive' he said he wished his body given to the surgeons that they might see how the various organs had adapted themselves to the changed condition. He feared being buried alive & said "the surgeon's knife will settle that matter.'

Col. Ray has in Port Arthur Edward's last will & full instructions concerning the disposal of the body; but of course at such a distance the instructions can not be carried out in this country. A letter of Edward's received yesterday dated Medellin Aug 9 & 10 throws light upon the cause of his death:

'Jones had his party out surveying a good part of the week but stayed in town himself studying over the old surveys of his predecessors. The party are in town today but start out again tomorrow early. Monday morn. They are gone out again for the whole week. Jones & I remaining here but Jones will make a special trip on Wednesday for some 6 days in company with J. Xxxxxx the minister of public works. I would go with them but am not fit for the trip. To confess the truth the mule ride caused me more damage than I supposed. My back did not recover but my waist swelled & bloated up till I became alarmed. I bought a pair of suspenders to hold up my pants & I loosened the waist of pants & drawers & vest. And now in 48 hours the internal changes are remarkable surprising to myself…I make these troubles all back to that last fall at Port Arthur 2 months ago. But the revolution now working may be the way of restoration – to pristine vigor & elasticity.'

Dr. Alhborn Katy's physician thinks the smelling could only come from the liver & that Edward 'was conscious for a long time before he passed away.' Thank you for your very kind letter rec'd on Friday. My love to all. Katy is better; but not yet recovered. I am pretty well but very tired. My back aches.

Yours affectionately Ellen"
