Mitford's loosely autobiographical satirein the vein of witty novels about aristocratic mannerslove and decadenceis her best-loved and most imitated work. Disguised as an elegant romantic fiction'The Pursuit of Love' brims with bon motsbathetic one-linersand a preoccupation with the wit of narration and conversation. It is as much about the fragile armour of wit as it is an engaging narrative of innocence unrequited loveand marriage. The key to the novel's playful artifice is the tone adopted by the narrator.Abandoned by her mother - the so-called Bolter - Fanny is brought up by her Aunt Emilyin the vicinity of various cousinsprincipally Lindathe central character. Linda dances her way through aesthetic education from Lord Merlin; love and unsuccessful marriage to Tonythe dull Tory MP; an affair and unsuccessful marriage to a communist; and successfulif tragically curtailedlove with Fabrice.Fanny meanwhilemarries an Oxford don and lives happily enough to be able to tell Linda's story with poise and equanimity. Unlikely to win approval from earnest liberalsthis often cutting novel nevertheless emerges from WW2's shadows with a curiously warm heart. The Folio Society's success is due to publishing books with exceptional typographyillustrationspaper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic textsusing skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books in both fiction and non- fiction fields. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions. Roland Pym b. July 14 1910d. Jan 12 2006 born Cheeveley Newmarketwas the son of Sir Charles Pym a professional soldierlandowner and chairman of Kent County Council. He was brought up at Foxwoldthe family home at Brasted Chart where he lived for most of his life. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Artwhere he was a contemporary of Osbert Lancaster.Herehe won a competition for his first commissiona mural at Lord's pavilion. Served in the Eighth Army in the desert during WW2.Principally a mural painterhe spent five years painting the grand saloon at Woburn AbbeyBedfordshireand also executed muralsfor example at Buckland AbbeyDevonfor Lady AstorThe Maritime Museum Londonthe Guinness BreweryDublin and the Dorchester Hotel London. He was a theatre designerbook illustratorlandscape artist and muralist whose elegant romanticism evoked memories of Rex Whistlerthough Pym claimed this reflected a similar approach rather than discipleship. He was also a stage designer eight London productions during the 1960sa painter of landscapes and conversation piecesand a desihgner of mosaics. As a book illustratormainly for childrenhe worked in pen and ink and watercolour b/wtwo colours or full colourreviving in a sketchy style the picturesque formality of early Victorian illustrations. His books include three peepshows 'Cinderella' 'Beauty and the Beast'and 'Sleeping Beauty' designed like model theatres. Pym enjoyed a fruitful career celebrating fashionable London life as well as rural well-beinghinting at the melancholy that can underlie country life.In later years he was perhaps most widely known for the striking black-and-white book illustrations that he produced for Edith Sitwell's 'English Eccentrics'Nancy Mitford's 'Pursuit of Love' and 'Love in a Cold Climate' and Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair'for which he also made colour plates. Probably his greatest achievement as a book illustrator he had a total of 60 to his name came in his later lifewhen Joe Whitlock Blundell at the Folio Society commissioned Pym for these two Nancy Mitford iconic novels. Frankenforst Regensburg Lindenhof Freiburg Munster Lbberstedt Germany / Rigi-Kulma Rigi-Kaltbad Switzerland 1962. Hardcover. Very Good. Five albums ranging from quarto to folio photo albums measuring between 10.5" x 8" and 15" x 8". Tan flexible paper boards black leather boards with gilt page edges string tied red patterned cloth boards orange leather boards with gilt decorations and one foldout album with green three quarter cloth and marbled paper boards. Contains a total of 490 black and white sepia cyanotype or color photographs measuring between 2" x 1" and 10" x 7" with some captions written in German. Other ephemera includes newspaper clippings and 22 postcards. All albums have lightly bumped corners and spine ends with small tears thus very good with near fine or better photographs. An archive of a German family's photo albums from 1913 to 1962 with each album focused on a different decade or theme. Most of the albums are focused on different parts of the family traveling to places around Germany and one album is specifically dedicated to a young woman's equestrian tournaments. One of the albums is centered on a couple traveling in and around Germany from 1929 through 1932. Each picture is labeled with their destinations including Frankenforst Regensburg Lindenhof Freiburg Munster and among others. Included are pictures of landscapes rivers bridges parks churches and cemeteries with several pictures of the couple standing together smiling or embracing each other. A couple photographs feature a zeppelin flying above them out in the countryside. There are also pictures of the couple at the beach and in a garden with their children including a daughter named "Lore." Another album is filled with photographs handwritten entries and newspaper clippings surrounding Uschi Schaemann and her horse Mario competing in various tournaments from 1958 through 1962. Uschi's riding name was "Madness." The album opens up with the date "Christmas Saturday December 24th by Mario and Uschi." The newspaper clippings are often of Uschi riding Mario and sometimes include the place they won at the tournaments often coming in first through fifth place. Uschi's written entries in the album are meant to be read as if Mario wrote it "Prayer of a horse! Always take care of me even if I am now more old. Give me always a clean camp and a wide box. Treat and care me well! Say a lot to me - and I will love you more and more." She fills the first several pages with how grateful her horse is to be with her "Let me beg of you and God will be worth thee for beside me was created also and I am grateful that I could live a part of my horse life with you. And my last and only wish is that it always remains so and that I may be allowed up to my last breath with you." Two of the older albums circa late 19th century and early 20th century show a family living in the country often visiting the beach with large wicker chairs. One of the two older albums contains more postcards from Rigi-Kulma and Rigi-Kaltbad in Switzerland with some pictures from the family's vacation there. The pictures show the snowy landscape with large mountains and small settlements. There are also several pictures placed together to show a panoramic view of the countryside in both Germany and Switzerland. There is a foldable album cover with photographs affixed to loose thick papers inside. The album is titled "Lbberstedt" after a town located in Germany. The album contains photographs of the village featuring one of the larger homes the family lived in the forests around Lbberstedt and of certain family members wearing military uniforms from World War I. An extensive collection of photo albums with carefully taken and chosen images detailing five decades of a German family's adventures and home life. hardcover

Brown Family Women Abolition Quakerism Brown Moses; Jenkins Anna Almy
Collection of Documents from the Family of Anna Almy Jenkins Granddaughter of Moses Brown Including a Holograph Copy of Moses Brown's Last Will Documents Relating to Jenkins' Involvement in the Religious Society of Friends and Various Deeds and Documents Relating to the Brown Family
Providence et al. 1866. Very Good. Anna Almy Jenkins was the granddaughter of the abolitionist Quaker patron Moses Brown. She was active in the Religious Society of Friends in the middle of the nineteenth century at a time when few women were involved in public religious life though Quakers in general were outliers in this regard. The present collection from her estate is notable for the documents of her involvement in the Quaker community as well as for the inclusion of several important Brown family papers the most notable being a holograph copy of Moses Brown's last will and testament in his own hand with important abolitionist content. Jenkins was the daughter of Sarah Brown 1764-1794 and William Almy. Sarah was the second daughter of Moses and Anna Brown. Moses had converted to Quakerism though most of the Brown family was Baptist and Jenkins was active in the Quaker community as well. Among the highlights of Jenkins' papers are two large letters of introduction for annual meetings in England Ireland in 1841 and 1843 highlighting the Quaker practice of allowing women to travel as representatives. One reads: "In furnishing our dear friend with a Certificate for so weighty and important a service we feel it right to say that she is a minister in unity and beloved by us sound in word and doctrine and exemplary in life and conversation." Another document included here from 1799 is a letter in Jenkins' hand asking her grandfather requesting that he send funds for her clothing. Documents included are as follows: 1. Manuscript copy of the Last Will and Testament of Moses Brown dated 1834-1835. 10 x 16 inches 11 pp. Some normal wear but still very good. This is a copy in Brown's hand signed by him twice and identical in content to the copy held at the Rhode Island Historical Society where Brown donated his papers and founded. A codicil to the will specifies that he will leave money to the Providence Anti-Slavery Society: "And whereas in item 33 of my said will I have given one share in Providence Bank t the Society for abolishing the Slave Trade &c. as by charter established and it not appearing probable that there may be another meeting of said society legally convened I do therefore hereby make null and void that particular Legacy as therein bequeathed. And do hereby give unto my trusty friends George W. Bonson and Hugh H. Brown in trust for the use of the Providence Anti-Slavery Society the said one share in Providence Bank; and as much money as shall make up with the said share the sum of five hundred dollars to be applied by the said Society to the printing of such manuscripts and pamphlets as the Society may judge most useful for abolishing Slavery Establishing their freedom and promoting their education and the civilization of the people of colour in the United States and my executors are hereby authorized and requested to transfer the said share and also to pay to the said trustees as much more as to make up this Legacy to the sum of Five Hundred Dollars accordingly." 2. Quitclaim regarding the Will of Ann Allen to land purchased by William Almy and Obediah Brown 1818. 8 x 14 inches single page. For the amount of $491.33 recorded by the Recorder of the Town of Providence. 3. Deed of Sale from Walter Cornell to Obadiah Brown for a thirty acre parcel of land in Portsmouth Rhode Island dated August 3 1818. 3 pp. With a note recording the deed from the city of Newport. 4. Two manuscript copies of deeds for the land of what is currently the Moses Brown School. The first an 1819 copy of an 1816 document 4 pp. the second an 1828 copy of an 1818 document 4 pp. Both 11 x 14 inches with brass clads. Both are copies of original documents at the Providence Town Clerk's office. Brown gave forty-three acres to the Incorporated Society of Friends for the purpose of setting up the school and served as treasurer until his death at age 98. The school was renamed the Moses Brown School in his honor after his death and continues at the same site to this day. 5. Manuscript copy of the Last Will and Testament of Anna Almy Jenkins 1849. 15 pp paper measuring 7 x 12 inches. A registered copy by the Providence Municipal Court with seals. 6. Manuscript copy of the Last Will and Testament of Moses Brown Jenkins 1866. 8 pp. 8 x 14 inches. Jenkins was the son of Anna Almy Jenkins 7. Two letters of introduction for Anna Almy Jenkins to the London and Ireland Yearly Meetings of Friends 1841 and 1843. Both about 17 x 21 inches on vellum. Quaker meetings in the nineteenth century were significant as Quakers were instrumental in various social causes such as abolition and the Peace Society. The meetings took place at Devonshire House and were attended by various members of parliament such as Joseph Pease. The meetings provided American and British Quakers an opportunity to share ideas. The British abolition movement had taken form by the 1820s with the culmination being the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. 8. Single page note from nine-year-old Anna Almy addressed to Moses Brown in Providence 7 x 4 inches bifolium. The letter reads "Will Grandfather please to send the Cloth for my Frock by bearer and oblige his affectionate granddaugther Anna Almy / fourth day morning 13th Nov. 1799." 9. Manuscript document signed by Moses Brown William Almy and William Jenkins September 9 1825. 4 pp. 7 x 12 inches. The document relates to the annuity to Dorcas Brown widow of Obadiah Brown set up by her husband and administered by the Society of Friends. The document lays out the sale of stock to cover the annuity and also refers to gifts made by Obadiah to a Friends School. 10. Manuscript Copy of a Portion of Obadiah Brown's Will dealing with Charitable Gifts to Various Churches Initialed by M.B. as a Witness - probably Moses Brown - in 1823. Single leaf 9 x 7 inches. The money is allocated to two Baptist churches two Congregational churches one Episcopal church and one Presybterian. 11. Autograph Letter Signed by Anna Almy Jenkins to Samuel Boyd Tobey 4 pp. Single leaf folded 7 x 9 inches. Tobey was the executor of Jenkins' estate and also an officer at Brown University and a fellow member of the Society of Friends. The letter lays out Jenkins' charitable wishes in great detail down to the gifting of specific trees from a nursery and their placement on an avenue to replace dead trees. The bulk of the letter deals with her arboreal wishes the last page with other charitable annuities she wishes to set up including funds for the Friends' School. Overall the documents provide a rich history of an influential family's charitable legacies and the Quaker documents give context to the family's values and to the abolitionist movement overall. A generally well preserved group in very good condition with some assorted wear and tear. unknown

Music Women's Suffrage Hutchinson Family Singers John Hutchinson
Souvenir: Song of Prophecy. Illustrated Broadside
Chicago 1893. Broadside 11 x 5 inches. Very Good. John Hutchison patriarch and leader of the Hutchinson Family Band was hired by the World's Fair Committee to perform as one of the "Wonders of America." This broadsheet unrecorded is a souvenir of his performance from the fair in which he sang "Prophecy of Freedom" a ballad with suffragist overtones that he had written in 1867. The Hutchinson Family singers had enjoyed a long and successful career at the point of the 1893 exhibition beginning as one of the most successful acts of the 1840s. Their support of abolition women's rights temperance and workers' rights had limited their following somewhat and following the Civil War their appearances in large cities were generally limited to churches temperance meetings and women's suffrage rallies. By 1893 John Hutchinson was at the tail end of his career - he would die fifteen years later - but was welcomed by attendants. William Lloyd Garrison would describe John Hutchinson's singing as "directly and purposely subservient to the freedom welfare happiness and moral elevation of the people." The broadsheet introduces the song as " sung at his meetings held during the 'Woman's Congress Campaign' through Kansas. dedicated to the 'World's Fair Congresses' and sung by him during that period when prominence was given to the 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man' emphasizing the principle as a true method of restoring the unity of all good for the whole race of man." The Hutchinson Family Band embodied the ideals of the Second Great Awakening and this shows those ideals going strong at the dawn of the twentieth century. A well preserved example in very good condition with some light creases and normal tanning. Not recorded in OCLC. unknown

Western Americana Women Cherokee Female Seminary at Tahlequah Ross JosephineArcher Family
Eighteen Photographs of Early Female Residents of Indian Territory Including a Photograph of the Female Staff at the Cherokee Female Seminary at Tahlequah and Photographs of the Archer Family and Josephine Pettit
Tahlequah et al. 1900. First Edition. Very Good. Female seminaries - essential in the education of American women in the nineteenth century - spread westward with Euro-American settlement. The Cherokee Female Seminary in Tahlequah was owned and operated by the Cherokee Nation until 1909 when the Oklahoma State Legislature passed a law converting it to the Northeastern State Normal School. This small but interesting collection of photographs shows scarce documentation of the staff at the Cherokee Female Seminary and two high profile female residents of Oklahoma Territory with an identified picture of the staff as well as several pictures of the sisters Ada and Carlotta Archer and Josephine Ross all residents of Indian Territory. The group portrait of the seminary staff includes: Minta Foreman the daughter of the Reverend Stephen Foreman who Cherokee Presbyterian minister who protested the removal treaty of 1836 and served as an associate justice of the Cherokee Nation and first superintendent of education; Cherrie Adair music teacher a descendent of the Cherokee leader and Confederate Colonel of the First Regiment of Cherokee Mounted Volunteers; Jennie Martin assistant to the superintendent; Carlotta Archer a pioneer of Cherokee descent who herself graduated from the Seminary taught at several schools and was the only woman to hold a position on the Board of Education of the Cherokee Nation; Lillian Alexander first assistant; Etta Rider principal; and E.W. Buffington superintendent. Also included are: Two pictures of Ada Archer sister of Carlotta and wife of Daniel Vincent Jones. In one photograph she is wearing Native American attire in the other badly damaged she is seated in a formal setting. Seven miscellaneous portraits of Carlotta Archer dating from late nineteenth to early twentieth century including formal portraits. Eight pictures of Josephine Ross and family. Ross nee Pettit was a descendent of John Hildebrand Sr. a German immigrant to Indian Territory and Susan Womancatcher of Cherokee descent. Included are several informal snapshots showing farm life as well as a well executed charcoal portrait of Ross with her child. An interesting collection of identified photographs in generally very good condition with the exception of the damaged portrait of Ada Archer. Chips to mount on group portrait second portrait of Ada Archer with deliberate erasing to background slight marginal tear to charcoal portrait of Josephine Ross. unknown

A series of letters sometimes confused but entertaining in nature written by a descendant of the Francis family of Springfield relating to Lincoln-related relics from the Simeon Francis Home where Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln met. The specifics of the courtship have been debated by Lincoln's biographers with Carl Sandburg asserting that Mrs. Francis had played matchmaker for Lincoln and Mary Todd unbeknownst to either of them by inviting them to a party in her parlor at the same time. Simeon Francis was a close friend of Lincoln Lincoln's tutor and eventually his appointee as Paymaster of all Federal troops in the Pacific Northwest. In these letters Allen Francis Edgar - the great grandson of Allen Francis - writes with much embellishment of his collection of Lincoln artifacts obtained from the Francis house including the knife that cut Lincoln's wedding cake and relates anecdotes about Lincoln: "I have quite a historical collection of relics of the Francis Home that are historical in the life of Lincoln and never published. Two large oil paintings painted By Mr. Darling an artist who came from Boston in the year 1851. He painted Lincoln's portrait and Mary Todd's. the paintings I have are of Allen Francis and her daughter Huldah Francis. Huldah is holding a rose in her had placed there by A. Lincoln old antique candle holders by which Lincoln read books and played cards Favorite game was whist knife that cut Lincoln's wedding cake cup and saucer Lincoln drank tea out of and silver tea pot. I have the diary of Allen Francis which contains a volume of historical fact.In speaking of Stuart do you know when Lincoln went to practice with Stuart Stuart told Lincoln we can't have you around the office Abe you don't dress well enough. Lincoln came to Allen Francis and asked him could he fix him up with some clothes. Picture Lincoln his toes were sticking out of his shoes. It certainly is wonderful to think he became President of the U.S." Several of the other letters concern the loaning of artifacts and photographs. Some of Edgar Allen Francis's letters were collected by Lincoln's biographer Ida Tarbell and are held in the Allegheny College Special Collections. Though we can't confirm the specifics of the artifacts he mentions: the journal the knife that cut the wedding cake Lincoln's preference for whist or any of the other claims laid out by Francis this remains an interesting collection that shows if nothing else the space that Lincoln and the relics of his life could occupy in the imagination of those with any connection to him. A very good collection well preserved with minimal normal wear. unknown

FEGAN FAMILY JOHN FEGAN DANIEL B. FEGAN JOHN R. FEGAN JOSEPH G. CATHERINE
1880 - 1895 HANDWRITTEN LEDGER BOOK OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PERSONAL AND BUSINESS EXPENSES AND BILLS OF THE PATRIARCH OF A FAMILY OF STONE MASONS IN SMALL TOWN IOWA
LYONS CLINTON IOWA IA. Good. 1880. On offer is the personal home and business accounting log book of a man John Fegan patriarch of a family Masonry company living in Lyons Iowa from 1880 all the way to 1895. The book is a fascinating mix of both professional and personal expenses over the years. This is a fascinating piece of history. At the beginning of the book January 5th 1880 Daniel Fegan is employed seemingly as a Mason by the Clinton & Lyons Horse Railway Company. The accounts of 1880 and 1881 are included almost exclusively on the first 8 pages. On these pages under the entries for 1880 and 1881 are entries for 1885 and 1886 as well. Later in the book around page 31 there are a number of pages devoted to the living expenses for 1880 written down. Jan 5th - To 1 bottle of ink and 5 pens - $.15; 6th - To Tobacco and cigars - $.60; 7th - To candies and nuts - $.40.9th - To 12 photographs part pay - $2.00. These living expenses continue throughout the entire year. It can be inferred that by 1885 Fegan has his own masonry company though it is possible he already had this company in 1880 and 81 and just contracted out to the Clinton & Lyons Horse Railway Co. September 25th 1885. Charles Phillips Sr. 4 1/2 days masoning at $2.30 per day - $11.25. His accounts for 1885 and 1886 show much more detail the entries of 1880/1881 and show quite a bit of complexity in the costs incurred and bills charged. As well they show the personal expenses that Fegan occurred as well. August 1885. The Bill or Cost of Building a porch on west side of the house. For all kinds of lumber - $18.00; For Mr. Boid for Carpenter work - $11.00; David Mitty for spouting - $6.34; Nails and paints of Snider - $6.00; John Anthony for a Load of Stone - $1.25. There are also entries under the titles Money paid out for housekeeping and living expenses account of Money Layed out for the House and Money Layed out for the use of House. It can be seen from these passages that the patriarch of the family was Daniel D. Fegan and that he had his three sons Joseph G. John R. and Daniel B. Fegan working for him. There is a page with the title John Fegan Money earned myself seemingly showing that the ledger would have been used by more than just one person at a time not just the father. In the pages solely devoted to 1886 the ledger book contains mostly living expenses such as Tobacco salt soap ivory 1/2 bushel of apples butter as well as others such as Paid for Clinton County Album church collection and Goose for Thanksgiving. For each day of the year the expenses are written on one or two lines. There are also pages titled Money Received of the Boys which pays opposite each name showing the money that each son paid to their father and mother usually $10 and $5 respectively. This might imply that the boys were somewhat independent contractors and paid their father and mother a monthly fee. The father John Fegan is very methodical throughout even writing down the expenses that his children occurred through buying him presents on his 70th birthday. These presents included a small handkerchief - $.10 2 pair socks $.20 each and a neck bough - $.25. For the years of 1890 and onwards there are no expenses related to the costs of the family business in the ledger. By this time its assumed that the ledger has become solely for personal expenses for the father John Fegan. One of his children most probably took over the company business ledger book possibly the oldest child Daniel B. The latest entry is for April 1st 1895. John Fegan would die later that month. Though this is the latest entry it is not the end of the book. However the entries that follow are few and far between. On the 77th page there is an attempt to use the book as a diary though only two days are recorded. October 18th 1880. The wind was blowing very hard Saturday and turned cold and we had a little freeze but it is very pleasant today. December 17th 1880. It has been snowing this morning but has slowed up some at 11 Oclock a.m. There are also a number of pages under the title Rent paid each month that begins in 1903 and go until 1907. The though the author of this section is unknown. It could be one of the children. The rent goes to Rands House Corner 3rd & Exchange. Beginning on page 132 there are a number of pages that begin in 1895 of the living expenses of Catherine Fegan the late John Fegans wife. The pages show her living expenses as well as the money received from her children. It lasts only a couple pages. There are a few diary entries from 1886 on a page as well as many other pages of notes and expenses and some calculations. The entries stop after around page 150. The book is in fair shape. Both front and back cover detached as well as a number of pages on the inside. The writing inside is very legible and clear and is in great shape.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF FEGAN FAMILY JOHN FEGAN DANIEL B. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN OF THE MINER FAMILY ?
1878 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THE HARD LIFE OF A YOUNG RURAL WASHERWOMAN AND THE HARDER BURDEN OF GRIEF SHE CARRIES
COLERAINE MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1878. On offer is an original manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman who with her pencil and her words paints a picture of toil and hardship. Dated Coleraine in Franklin County Massachusetts near Greenfield and Deerfield River which are frequently mentioned collectors and researchers of the area will delight in the specific and detailed genealogical information as our author does a superb job in her entries. A casual reading suggests this woman is married to the 27 year old Charlie and they are part of the Miner 'clan' with mention of many many Miners in their daily life. A washerwoman for the most part everyday she says whose sheets whose pillowcase whose other articles are washed along with her own family's duties food preparation travels to church visitors who frequently stay over and other domestic chores the reader will wonder at her strength and her grit. Throughout the 5 x 4.5 inch 'chunk' of what was obviously a larger note pad roughly cut in half she writes clearly in tight script a gem of Massachusetts Americana. She mentions many dozens of names including: Uncle Wash Frankie Jerre N. and D. Brown Elder Whittaker Miss Rug Willie Richardson Baldwin Miner his singing school Carrie and Marilla Shearer Payson Flagg Charlie Miner. Sam Miner 'his whole conversation show him to be a true Christian whom it always gives me pleasure to find' Ed Coombs Atta Barber Clarence Brigham Charlie Denison. Besides the work the family information and local news and events she will make a particular entry as with Sam Miner and sometimes incredibly personal intimate revelations when tragedy strikes: Timmie died this forenoon about nine. G___G___G___ How grievous this affair I am very sorrowful today for one more grief is fresh and will leave its mark on my mind through all time'. 'I washed for us. Mr. M. and D.B. came. I did not shed tears til evening. Memories are so unpleasant when they are of suffering.'; 'perhaps my self reproach is unjustthat I know it was'. ABRAHAM CALDWELL and FAMILY
1867 - 1900 ARCHIVE OF FIVE 5 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARIES BELONGING TO THE ABRAHAM CALDWELL FAMILY OF IPSWICH MASSACHUSETTS
IPSWICH MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1867. On offer are five handwritten manuscript journals all having belonged to the Caldwell family who lived in Massachusetts one of the diaries 1870 has the name Ezra S. Vieyes written in it. A casual reading does not determine where Ezra fits in with the Caldwell family but a more detailed reading will hopefully flesh out the relationship. Two of the diaries have the name of the family scion being Abraham Caldwell of Ipswich Massachusetts. Other towns mentioned include Westminster Fitchburg Northborough and Worcester. The diaries represent the years 1867 full of entries 1870 a quarter full 1875 a half filled 1887 fully written and the 1890's. Though not all fully written and the entries suggest illiterate writers these diaries represent a true piece of Americana with a treasure trove of local historical detail and genealogical information. For the medical collector there is an interesting thread running throughout - Mr. Caldwell is quite aged and he catalogues his daily ailments certainly a medical professional may assess his health from his writings. Here are some snippets: 1867 - "February 26th Went to examination. Lizzie Rawson teach good." "March 4th Went to town meeting. Another trial of Shemp decided as it should be." "May 10th Surveyed road to town distance of about 2 miles 15 ft." "June 17th Golden wedding 75-100 people persons present." "September 13th Took Templers Degrees. Went to town to lecture. Carried B.M. Balch." "October 13th On euqaduct to town meeting for roads. Was chosen on committee." 1887 "January 9th 7 Below. Very cold. Snow flakes flying all day. Ben out very little today. Louitah Lord little more comfortable but very sick." "February 9th Sick all day. From Salem paper I see Mr. Joseph Pusfer died in Salem Oct. 19th 1886. Born July 18th 1798." "March 14th Today I hav made a grait mistak in being two positive when in fact I was rong. My mind is faking me." "June 22nd and 23rd Stage coach below belonged to Appleton farm. Boiled out sink cess pool very hard job. Had nummness in my arm and shoulder. Stage coach passed to day for Salem." "July 25th Hot and sultry. A young lady came to Mrs. Batysons. Sang for House Benefit." "August 9th Went marsh with North Harris and Negro. Went to Beverly. Stayed at Edwards over night." "August 21st Fine and pleasant. John Billy's mother and sister here. Conrad G to made round Cape Ann." "October 6th Tryed to make some wine. Caried my grapes to Capt. Wilcomb and he pressed them for me." "October 19th Finished pounding the beans then went to Georgetown. Went in to Noisas Shoe factory. Was kindly received and shown from basement up. Felt interest and enjoyed it muh." "December 14th Very warm and Pleasant. Went over to south side river to Mrs. Dolls with Edy B. Escamined his stock." "December 16th Cooler. Gave notice to Mrs. Campbell that I should want the tenement she now ocupies for my own use the first of April next." "December 19th Mrs. Smith at the Invenational House left and fell and broke both arms. Slippery this morn. Bought turkey of Perkins." The 1893-1900 journal in the lot is a handwritten financial journal which has about 100 pages of expense type entries. I believe most of the entries have to do with rentals and money collected for the rentals. This journal has the name John Caldwell written on the inside. The front cover has fallen off of this journal and some of the pages are torn. The first 20 pages have also been torn out and are not accounted for.
