Reed and Watson Family Letters
Correspondence and Ephemera Collection of the Reed and Watson families farmers of Jackson and Stone Counties Missouri 1866 -1903
No Binding. Very Good. Collection of 102 letters 233 pages plus approximately 81 pieces of printed and manuscript ephemera all dated 1866-1903. James Charles Watson a.k.a. John Charles DeForrest James Charles Watson a.k.a John Charles DeForrest was born about the year 1830 in Kentucky Watson's parents were also born in Kentucky. For some reason J.C. Watson appears to have been an alias for a man named Charles DeForrest his name is sometimes seen as DeForest with one "r.' DeForrest was married under his true name to Malinda Reed in 1864 and on other legal matters he appears to use the DeForrest surname. He seems to have gone by James or John Charles Watson for most of his life though in business and in this collection of correspondence. There is one letter in the collection signed "Charles DeForrest" and there is a letter where the envelope is addressed to Charles Watson but the letter itself is addressed to Charles DeForrest. Much of the online genealogy findings show this alias and it is also noted by the family's historians. J. C. Watson was already in Jackson County Missouri by 1864 when he married Malinda Reed 1832-1934 the daughter of Mathias Reed and Mahala Hoof/Hufft 1821-1887. The Reed family was found in the U.S. Census of 1850 thru 1870 living in Blue Jackson County Missouri. Mathias Reed was a farmer born in Virginia. His wife Mahala was born in Tennessee. Besides Malinda her parents had at least five other children: 1. Mathias A. Reed 1822-1913 married M. Amine Johnston and had at least one daughter Laura Olive Reed Brandon. 2. Elizabeth J. Reed 1833-1922 who married William F. Webster 1828-1897 and had at least six children: James Reed 1825- married a woman by the name of Nancy; Milia Permelia Webster Wilson Malinda Elizarene Webster Carr William D. Webster Sarah Elizabeth Webster Knight Larue Marquis Webster Russell. The Websters write several of the letters in this collection. 3. Solomon Reed 1837-1932 who married Mahala F. Hall and had a daughter named Nannie A. Hall Reed. 4. Mahala Katharine/Catharine Reed Richardson 1846-1926 who married a farmer by the name of James M. Richardson 1837-1925. They lived in the Flat Creek area in 1900-1920. The Richardsons write several letters in this collection. 5. David Reed 1850-. J.C. Watson and his wife had at least six children: William Charles Watson died before age 5; Jasper Stonewall Watson b. 1867; Samuel Watson b. 1869 died age 17 circa 1886; Sarah Alice Watson b.1872; Catherine Watson b. 1875; and Maggie D. Watson. All of the children were born in Missouri and several of them wrote letters in this collection. The 1870 Census found Watson and his wife Malinda and two of their children Stonewall and Samuel living at Blue Jackson County Missouri where Malinda's parents were found. Watson had a small personal estate of about $100. By 1870 Mathias Reed was dead and Mahala was a widow with real estate of $8000 and personal estate of $300. Only one of her sons David is living with her. In 1880 when the Census was taken we find Watson and his growing family enumerated at James Stone County Missouri. He was listed as a farm laborer as were two of his sons 13 year old Stonewall and 11 year old Samuel. By the 1890s Watson was appointed postmaster of Cape Fair Missouri and served at that post at least from 1891 to 1897. The 1900 Census shows Watson owning a farm at Flat Creek in Stone County just 20 miles west of Cape Fair. In 1900 only their youngest daughter was still at home Maggie. Two of the six children had died between the 1880 and 1900 censuses. It is unclear when J.C. Watson died. His wife Malinda died in 1934. Description of Collection 103 letters 233 pages dated 15 February 1866 to 21 January 1903 as follows: 8 letters 17 page

unknown
