‎AYSAN SEV'ER.‎

‎Women and divorce in Canada. A sociological analysis.‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [xviii], 328 p. Women and divorce in Canada: A sociological analysis provides an in-depth review of divorce and traces its causes and consequences for women, children and men. The book begins with an historic review of Judeo-Christian thought and practice regarding divorce with special focus on how men and women have been perceived and how these perceptions, rooted in religious philosophy, have expanded to determine their legal rights and obligations to one another. In addition to the wealth of theoretical and historical issues discussed in the book, the author provides a lengthy review of consequences of divorce including the shifts in socioeconomic conditions of divorces. Special attention is drawn to the resilience of children to cope with events and the potential strength they may gather from involvement with their parents in mastering this taxing life experience. The author's discussion of the feeling of empowerment which divorce sometimes engenders is especially compelling. Women and divorce in Canada provides valuable and in-depth understanding of divorce which has become an integral part of Canadian family life in the last twenty-five years.‎

‎ELI SHAUL SHAUL.‎

‎From Balat to Bat Yam: Memoirs of a Turkish Jew.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 243 p. " Eli Shaul (1916-2004) was a Turkish Jew. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".‎

‎YUSUF ÜNAL.‎

‎The Turks and the Jews. From Besim Tibuk's perspective.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 88 p. "What did the Jews actually think about the Ottomans and how did they behave? Did we show progress during the Republican Era or not? What about the Nobel Prizes? The Jewish nation, with an only 15 million population, got more then 100 Nobel Prizes. However, there are only a handful of people who got the Nobel Prize in the Islamic world with 1,5 billion believers. The Jews are quite influential in world finance, trade, politics and technology. They are always present at all of the key points. They used to regard Turkey as their second mother land and give support whenever needed. And now,is the 13-century-old friendship being replaced by hatred and blood? Join the taking conversation with Besim Tibuk".‎

‎Under Turkish skies. A family history, 1876-1960.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 121 p. Under Turkish skies. A family history, 1876-1960. This is a review of Ben Sperer's years in Turkey before he left the country to take up residence in Canada. In an effort to place his own story in its proper context, the author preceded it by a description of his parent's lives. It is an interesting story reflecting the memories of a colourful life of an Ashkenazi Jew in a society rich in tradition and history going back generations. It is against this background that the author describes the ups and downs, the tragedies and successes, as well as the ordinary day-to-day events of his life in Turkey.‎

Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera, Constantinople. 26,5x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co., London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe, and 40 to 41, Old Broad Street, London, E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo, (1860-1935), was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child, Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, to Paris around 1869, where he grew up and continued the career of his father, Nissim de Camondo (1830-1889), as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire, established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911, he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent, he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions, even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell, with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great, a set of Buffon porcelain (with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings) from the Sèvres manufacturer, and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers, daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers, in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master, Count Charles Sampieri, whom she would later marry and divorce. The children, Nissim and Beatrice, remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914, but his son did not reside there very long, as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son, whom he adored, would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917, de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935, and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum (Musée Nissim de Camondo) in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection, the meticulously-restored service areas, elevator, and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II, his daughter Béatrice, his son-of-law Léon Reinach, and their children (Fanny and Bertrand) were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result, the de Camondo family died out.‎
