Sir Anthony Richard Wagner (1908-1995) was one of the longest-serving members of the College of Arms of the twentieth century, and one of the most prolific authors on heraldry and genealogy. He joined the College in 1931 as Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary (in which position he acquired and signed this copy). During the next sixty years or so he occupied most of the major offices, including Richmond Herald (1943) and Garter Principal King of Arms in 1961. ‎Undated; on letterhead of the Oxford University Press Warehouse and Trade Department London. See Nicolas Barker’s typically-elegant obituary of Williamson in the Independent. 2pp 4to. The obituary of the recipient Andrew Block 1892-1987 in ‘The Private Library’ was subtitled ‘the doyen of booksellers’; his business was established in 1911. On aged and worn paper; folded three times. Signed ‘Hugh Williamson:’ and addressed to ‘Mr Block’. Thirty-one lines in a close calligraphic hand. Having been ‘particularly lucky’ every time he has called on Block and having acquired ‘the 12mo Baskerville the Pickering in Caslon’s types and the plays printed by John Bell’ on his last visit he asks him to ‘keep an eye open for one or two cheap items’. Before giving a list of books he ‘particularly’ needs from the Aldine Press to Baskerville he describes his interest ‘in the development of roman and italic types which means that most of the books I need were printed before the end of the 18th century. On the other hand I can’t really afford even a guinea for a book unless it’s the kind of thing I could sell again for as much as I gave in case of need. ‎8vo., Fourth Edition, with a frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved title-vignette and 5 engraved plates, free endpapers lightly browned, small neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original diced cloth gilt, gilt back, uncut, a very good, clean copy. With the contemporary blind stamp of City Book Mart, Newcastle-on-Tyne, on rear free endpaper. Hughes's sequel to 'Schooldays' was first published in three volumes in 1861. The first single-volume edition followed in 1874 and the first illustrated edition in 1871. Hall's illustrations proved popular and this third version was several times reissued. The current edition is therefore technically the fourth and retains all Hall's work. A very nice copy.‎

‎On his Oxford University Press letterhead 'Manager: HUMPHREY MILFORD Head Office: Amen Corner London E.C. 4'. 16 August 1919. 1p. 4to. In fair condition on aged and spotted paper. A convincing copy of a genuine typed letter with Milford's signature and the letterhead in black ink and the typewritten text in purple. 25 lines of text in three paragraphs. An interesting glimpse into the state of the British publishing industry in the period immediately following the First World War. Begins: 'Dear Sir It is unfortunately quite clear that any hope which may have been entertained of the possiblity of a general reduction in the price of books must now be abandoned; at any rate for some considerable time.' Despite 'a fall in the price of paper which has now stopped' costs 'have mounted steadily; the cost of printing books is now higher than it has ever been. . Wages have been again raised in all the trades - paper-making printing and binding .'. The second paragraph explains how although 'the 37 1/2 % which has been added to invoices since November 1918 is not sufficient to cover the increased charges' he is holding off increasing this to 50 %. In a last short paragraph he states his intentions regarding prices for the period ending on 1 January 1920.
