‎Mycenae : a Guide to Its Ruins and Its History‎

‎For 30 years Professor George E. Mylonas directed excavations at Mycenae for Washington University in St. Louis and the Archaeological Society of Athens. (1951-1981) Thirty years of excavation have brought about the need for a Guide book such as this, which contains the latest results of the archaeologists' work at Mycenae. The illustrations and the many plans it contains will, I hope, make easy the study of the ruins which at first glance seem labyrinthine. In Part I of the Guide I give a full description of the remains on the acropolis of Mycenae; in Part II, an account of the tombs and houses to be found outside the acropolis. In Part III, I offer a concise account of the history and legends of Mycenae, of the excavations and of the excavators whose work has made possible the study of the Mycenaean civilization. ‎The central purpose of this study is to examine the response of the preachers Giovanni Dominici (1356-1419) and Bernardino da Siena (1380-1444) to the changes, the alternatives they offered and their attempts to direct the life of the laity. The preaching of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola and the period of his dominance (1494-1498) are a well-known chapter in the history of Renaissance Florence. However, comparatively less research has been done on Savonarola's predecessors, the mendicant preachers of Florence in the first half of the fifteenth century. The Dominican Giovanni Dominici (1356-1419) and the Franciscan Bernardino da Siena (1380-1444) were the most important of these preachers. Dominici's and Bernardino's sermons, as they appear in Tuscan reports (reportationes) of their preaching, are a valuable historical source. Written down by anonymous listeners, these are the major reports of sermons preached in fifteenth-century Florence before Savonarola. The reportationes are unique in that they transmit in full the actual preaching event and are not merely a doctrinal summary composed by the preacher. Many of these sermons are still in manuscript form, especially those of Dominici, which have never been studied in detail and remain unpublished to this day. Dominici and Bernardino were active in Florence at a time when broad legal, social and cultural changes were taking place. The central purpose of this study is to examine the response of these preachers to the changes, the alternatives they offered and their attempts to direct the life of the laity. The four principal chapters are devoted to the preachers' opinions on secular and ecclesiastical politics, education and humanism, morality and the family and the economy and usury (the role of the Jews), the discussion built around a comparison between the two preachers. Although they differed in their interests and in their style - the unbending Dominici concentrating on politics and culture while the more flexible Bernardino focused on morality and the economy - they shared ideologies. ‎L'abbaye de Remiremont etait une des plus anciennes et importantes maisons religieuses des Vosges. Fondee au VIIe siecle, en relation avec toute la noblesse locale ou plus eloignee, controlant une partie des institutions religieuses vosgiennes, elle etait un des fleurons de la Lorraine monastique. Importante, elle l'est aussi pour les medievistes, grace aux textes qu'elle a laisses, particulierement le Liber memorialis, qui livre le nom de milliers de religieux et religieuses et de laics en contact avec l'abbaye. Malgre cela, les chartes de Remiremont n'avaient pas encore ete livrees au public. Jean Bridot a comble cette lacune, ne reunissant pas seulement les chartes recues par l'abbaye, mais aussi celles qui, bien que conservees dans d'autres fonds, la concernent. De la charte fausse de Romary, l'eponyme fondateur du monastere, datee de 620, a l'energique avertissement adresse en 1231 par l'abbesse Marguerite aux agresseurs de l'abbaye, ce sont 171 chartes qui sont soigneusement editees, a partir de dizaines de manuscrits ou d'imprimes anciens. L'ensemble permet de suivre le developpement et la vie de Remiremont, entre ses allies et ses concurrents, ses appuis et ses ennemis. Le corpus des actes est edite dans l'ordre chronologique. Il est suivi par un index des personnes et des lieux et par un index des matieres. Languages: French.‎
