Chroniqueurs, philosophes, présentateurs de télévision, historiens ou romanciers, ils prétendent tous détenir le remède miracle : certains exhibent le clystère de la sélection, d'autres préconisent la saignée de la privatisation, d'autres encore suggèrent de vigoureux cataplasmes disciplinaires... Mais tous s'accordent à désigner le coupable, la pédagogie - ou le " pédagogisme " comme ils disent - qui aurait sacrifié toute véritable exigence disciplinaire pour promouvoir l'écoute béate des aspirations des élèves. L'Ecole serait ainsi victime d'une massification galopante et démagogique, la violence en serait le lot quotidien et la qualité y serait devenue introuvable. Face à ces attaques, Philippe Meirieu et Michel Develay ont décidé de s'engager. Evoquant la figure d'Emile, le personnage emblématique du traité de Rousseau sur l'éducation, ils se proposent de passer au crible les discours actuels sur l'Ecole et la pédagogie. Ils se placent ainsi résolument du côté de l'élève, en s'efforçant de distinguer avec lui ce qui l'aide à grandir de ce qui l'abîme, ce qui promeut son humanité de ce qui le condamne à la dépendance ou à la violence. C'est pourquoi ils prennent au sérieux les critiques et les objections qui mettent en question le rôle des Sciences de l'Education, la fonction de la pédagogie, la légitimité de la démocratisation du système éducatif, la référence aux Droits de l'Enfant, l'abandon des contenus disciplinaires. Sur tout cela, ils cherchent à comprendre le point de vue de leurs adversaires, rappellent les acquis des recherches en matière éducative, clarifient les enjeux essentiels et affirment leurs convictions. Ecartant radicalement la tentation de traiter toujours l'échec par l'exclusion, ils dessinent ici, sur la question essentielle de l'Ecole, les contours d'une " utopie de référence " pour une société qui en a terriblement besoin.
