Laid in is the rarely-encountered folio broadside "An Account of the Number of Persons Dying at the Several Ages Undermentioned for Ten Years Past", printed in 1738 or 1739 (from which we learn, for example, that of 1000 children born alive, only 495 survived to age 9). In addition to the beautiful full-page plates, this volume is illustrated with numerous smaller engravings (depicting the gates of London, including the infamous Newgate Prison), over 100 woodcuts of the arms of the various guilds, and assorted typographical ornaments. Includes a lengthy account of the history of London, a description of all of the Churches (with hundreds of epitaphs, of notable and unknown people, given in full); a description of the politics, the commerce, the schools, the inns, the courts, the hospitals, the arts, the ale-houses, the alms-houses.... ‎Un ouvrage unique qui met en relief les inégalités spatiales de santé en France. La France ne disposait pas encore d'un atlas de la santé. De ce constat est née l'idée de mettre en chantier une vaste analyse sur les disparités spatiales de santé. Celle-ci est constituée de trois grandes parties dont la première est consacrée à la mortalité et aux causes de décès. On constate en effet que la France connaît d'importantes inégalités spatiales de santé, tant pour la mortalité et les états de santé que pour l'offre et l'activité du système de soins. Une analyse géographique, à échelle fine, de ces écarts, offre aux chercheurs de nouvelles pistes de recherche et aux décideurs des arguments pour orienter les efforts sanitaires. Ce premier volume est composé de trois grandes sections : L'analyse de la mortalité générale en France, qui souligne les différentiels d'espérance de vie d'une région à l'autre (jusqu'à dix ans entre le Nord et le Sud). On y perçoit également l'importance du niveau d'urbanisation comme critère de différenciation de la mortalité par groupe d'âge ; L'analyse par causes de décès, dans laquelle les auteurs ont dressé de véritables profils de mortalité selon les zones géographiques et le sexe. Les disparités pour chaque cause médicale de décès y sont largement commentées. La notion de "mortalité évitable" apparaît ici ; les auteurs pointant du doigt les dysfonctionnements du système des soins préventifs et curatifs en France qui mènent à de véritables inégalités régionales ; L'analyse par région permet enfin d'étudier les disparités intrarégionales à des échelles fines et de comparer la situation des villes à leur espace environnant. On verra qu'à mesure que la taille de la ville augmente, les phénomènes de ségrégation et d'inégalités se répercutent sur la répartition de la mortalité régionale. Coordonné par trois grands spécialistes en géographie de la santé et en épidémiologie, cet ouvrage sans précédent, présentant près de 200 planches en couleur largement commentées, est un outil d'une utilité considérable pour les géographes, les démographes et les responsables de santé publique.
