‎Das Vorwort ist datiert Heidelberg, im October 1850. 1857 erschien noch eine '2., durchaus umgearbeitete und vermehrte Auflage' (vgl. VK GBV). - "Das Folgende bitte ich als einen Versuch betrachten zu wollen, die Hygieine in ihrem Gesamtumfang, als Lebens- und Gesundheitslehre in ihren privaten Beziehungen zu jedem Einzelnen wie in ihren öffentlichen oder allgemeinen zur Gesellschaft, zur ganzen Bevölkerung, in unsere Literatur einzuführen. [..] Statt hunderterlei Leiden und Seuchen so oft vergeblich zu bekämpfen, mussten wir sie vielmehr lieber verhüten oder durch eine gesundheitsgemässe Stellung aller Lebensverhältnisse, nicht gerade blos durch Arzneien u. dgl. zu beseitigen lernen. Diess führt uns zu einer weitern hochwichtigen Seite unserer Hygieine, zu ihrer Bedeutung nemlich für die Gesellschaft und deren verschiedene Classen, eine Seite, welcher im Verlaufe dieses Werks überall ein Hauptaugenmerk zugewendet worden. Hilft es doch zu Nichts, schlechthin Gesundheitsregeln zu geben; es muss auch allen Volksclassen so gut als dem Einzelnen die Möglichkeit gegeben seyn, unseren unabweislichen Lebens- und Gesundheitsbedingungen oder mit andern Worten: den Gesetzen unserer Natur Genüge zu thun. Diess aber zu ermöglichen ist Sache der staatlichen, kurz aller gesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen, und insofern kommt der Hygieine, zumal in unsern Tagen, z.B. für den ächten Staatsmann, auch den Erzieher keine viel geringere Bedeutung zu als z.B. für den Arzt und jeden Menschenfreund." p. Beschäftigungsweisen, verschiedene Berufsarten und Gewerbe; Anhang: Allgemeine Gesundheits- und Lebensstatistik. - Für Deutschland relativ frühe Monographie zu diesem sozialmedizinischen Spezialgebiet, das durch die Industrialisierung und Verstädterung zusätzlich aktualisiert und akzentuiert wurde. Während sich in England und Deutschland die unternommenen Anstrengungen des ausgehenden 18. und beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts abschwächten, wurden sie in Frankreich verstärkt. Erst um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand in Deutschland "eine starke Hygienebewegung unter der Führung von Max von Pettenkofer (1818-1901). [.. Er war] der Vater der modernen wissenschaftlichen Hygiene und nahm im Jahre 1865 den ersten Lehrstuhl für experimentelle Hygiene in München ein. Die präbakteriologischen Hygieniker kämpften gegen 'Schmutz und Gestank'. Wenn dies auch unzureichend war, so trug es doch viel zur Beseitigung von Krankheitsursachen und -überträgern, wie z.B. Ratten und Läusen, bei. Die präbakteriologische Hygienebewegung konzentrierte sich auf den Kampf gegen überfüllte Wohnungen, verschmutzte Wasserversorgung, schlechte Kanalisation, verfälschte Nahrung und Kinderarbeit. [..] Unter der Führung von Virchow und Hermann Cohn wurde die Schulhygiene stark entwickelt. Nach 1850 wurden Wasserversorgung und Kanalisation in Westeuropa verbessert. Nahrungsmittelgesetze wurden in den siebziger Jahren eingeführt; Lehrstühle für Hygiene in den sechziger Jahren gegründet." (etc.; E. Ackerknecht, Kurze Geschichte der medizin. Stuttgart 1959, p. 172 f.). -- Friedrich Oesterlen (Murrhardt, Wtbg. 1812-1877 Stuttgart), Mediziner. 1843 Habilitation in Tübingen, 1845 Professor in Dorpat. Privatisierte seit 1848 in Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Zürich und Glarus. Er hat sich durch eine Reihe bahnbrechender Schriften besonders um die Hygiene und die medizinische Statistik verdient gemacht. Auch begründete er 1845 die 'Jahrbücher für praktische Heilkunde' und 1860 in Tübingen die 'Zeitschrift für Hygiene, medizinische Statistik und Sanitätspolizei' (Brockh. 12, 1894, mit Bibliographie). "In schwerem Ringen hat er die Wissenschaft hoch gehalten und nach Kräften gefördert, allein es konnte ihm nicht erspart bleiben zu sehen, dass so manches, was er gesäet hatte, von anderen gezeitigt wurde und dass der volle Erfolg ihm, dem auf sich selbst Angewiesenen und Isolirten, nicht zu Theil wurde. Nach einem in Stuttgart verbrachten Jahre, in welchem er bei Fehling einen praktischen Cursus in der Chemie durchgemacht hatte, übersiedelte er nach Heidelberg, hielt daselbst als Privatdocent Vorlesungen über Heilmittellehre und Hygieine und ließ 1850 das 'Handbuch der Hygieine'erscheinen. Dieses Werk lehnte sich zunächst an französische und englische Vorbilder an; es war das erste, das den in jenen Ländern gewonnenen Stand der öffentlichen und privaten Gesundheitspflege auch in Deutschland bekannt machte und das Interesse der Aerzte und weiterer Kreise für diese wichtigen Fragen zu erwecken suchte. [..] Im Jahre 1858 nach Zürich übergesiedelt, gab er daselbst die erste deutsche Zeitschrift für Hygieine und medicinische Statistik heraus, für welche aber die Zeit noch nicht gekommen war."
