Multiple fine abraded lines and creases to covers multiple splits to spine longest 4 inches centrefold detached; interior in very good condition overall. The third issue of an extraordinary magazine embracing the challenges of the pre World War II era in both articles and graphics. There is an extensive section of black and white photo illustrations of events of the times. The Japanese encouragement of opium smoking in China is featured in an illustration by David Low "Eastern Opium Den": "One of Japan's first acts in 'restoring civilization" to China was to reopen the opium dens closed by the so-called 'bandit reds.'" A smiling Japanese supplies opium to Britain France and the United States in a room with a scroll featuring Hitler and Mussolini. In addition there are five pages of photo illustrations of Chinese opium addicts. There are three large photographs of Trotsky including a rare one in which he is seen with Stalin to accompany an interview conducted in Mexico City. An article by Henry C. Wolfe covers "The Nazi Propaganda Industry." Also: an unusual Chesapeake and Ohio railroad ad featuring a pictorial map of their route from Philadelphia and Newport News to Chicago; color ad by Petty for Old Gold cigarettes. Color cartoons by Sam Berman of Chamberlain and Stalin. The cover illustration of a young refugee from Franco's Spain by Wesley Neff is titled "A Cargo of Innocence." Publication of the magazine lasted for just over two years ceasing in 1939; it was described by the editor Arnold Gingrich as "A magazine of unfamiliar fact and informed opinion filling in the shadows cast by coming events all over the world; equally opposed to the development of dictatorship from either Left or Right whose one fixed editorial aim is to give unhampered and unbiased demonstration of whatever dangers threaten this our democracy from without and within in accord with the Lincolnian dictum of 'Let the people know the truth and this country is safe.'" .
