Le dipendenze patologiche si inseriscono nella crisi della società attuale dove si assiste a una progressiva incapacità di amare, con un ripiego narcisistico delle persone su se stesse, e al contempo a un allarmante aumento degli episodi di violenza, che la cronaca quotidiana ci propina in modo sempre più pressante e angoscioso. THE PROBLEM OF LAY ANALYSIS pp. 1-186 translated from the German by A. Paul Maerker-Branden. AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STUDY pp. 187-316 translated by James Stachey. Bound in the original tan cloth stamped in black on the spine and front cover. Laid-in at the end is a New York Times newspaper clipping from July 1929. It reports that the British Medical Association decided to neither approve nor condemn the practice of psychoanalysis holding that further testing is needed. This book is from the library of and bears the ink signature of Dr. Arthur Frank Payne 1876-1939 of Newton New Jersey. Dr. Payne earned the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago and that of Master of Arts at Columbia University. In 1917 he served as executive secretary of the Military Training Commission in New York. In 1918 he was director of the United States War Department surveys. He pursued advanced studies at Harvard where he was made a Doctor of Education. He went on to teach at Columbia the College of the City of New York the University of Minnesota the University of California and Harvard. Dr. Payne edited several educational and psychological texts for McGraw-Hill and was associate editor of VOCATIONAL EDUCATION MAGAZINE. A gifted lecturer Dr. Payne spoke regularly on psychology at Carnegie Hall in New York. For many years Dr. Payne was actively involved with the National Education Association serving as its treasurer and as president of its department of vocational guidance. According to his biography in THE STORY OF NEW JERSEY by William S. Myers Dr. Payne's "contribution toward solving some of the colossal psychological problems rising in consequence of modern industrial changes was a truly notable one of value to countless individuals.". br. Quest'opera, la più conosciuta di Freud assieme a "L'interpretazione dei sogni", è a tutt'oggi uno dei testi fondamentali per la psicoanalisi. Nel suo studio Freud espone la teoria secondo cui la maggior parte degli 'atti mancati' quotidiani, come la dimenticanza, l'errore nel parlare, nello scrivere e nel leggere o lo smarrimento di oggetti, siano espressioni di intenzioni inconsce. Secondo lui, quindi, quelli che a prima vista consideriamo accadimenti casuali e privi di importanza sono, in realtà, meccanismi significativi dell'inconscio con delle precise motivazioni. Ingegnoso e acuto, l'autore offre nuove interpretazioni del complesso comportamento umano e dimostra, senz'ombra di dubbio, che lo stato mentale normale e anormale sono meno differenti di quanto si pensi.
