From the publisher: "Up until now we have had little knowledge of what the state of unconsciousness was like from the patient's point of view. Surprisingly in a state considered void of human experiences Lawrence found that the events subjects reported were extraordinary. Her research in hospital units and in the literature reveals that more than 70% of the individuals who regain consciousness remember events during their unconscious period. br. Il libro esplora il concetto di borderline cercando di metterne in evidenza il suo doppio versante, psicopatologico, da un lato, sociale, dall'altro. Il ricorso alla diagnosi di personalità borderline, come ben sanno coloro che si occupano del trattamento del disagio psichico contemporaneo, costituisce uno degli esiti più frequenti nella presa in carico e nella cura psicoterapica; a fronte di una simile diffusione del fenomeno sintomatico non può non essere preso in considerazione il contesto storico-culturale nel quale il fenomeno stesso si è prodotto. Sintomo e società presentano, in tal senso, la stessa struttura: l'uno è il derivato psicopatologico dell'altra, la forma di sofferenza che amplifica le contraddizioni e le caratteristiche del nuovo modo di stare al mondo e di fare (o, forse, di non fare) legame con l'altro. L'ipotesi che anima il lavoro dell'autore è che tanto il sintomo borderline quanto la società borderline possano essere meglio compresi riconoscendo in essi il modello di funzionamento psichico che caratterizza la logica perversa. Il fantasma sociale contemporaneo è, infatti, un fantasma di tipo perverso che si proietta sulla maschera che il soggetto borderline inconsapevolmente indossa: è una costruzione libidica che incita i cittadini-consumatori a soddisfarsi in attitudini di tipo borderline, attraverso quei classici comportamenti ordalici che si ritrovano enfatizzati nella clinica dei disturbi di personalità.
