"Pearl Poet", Sophie Jewett (Translator) Associate Professor of English Literature in Wellesley College
The Pearl A Middle English Poem A Modern Version in the Metre of the Original
Thomas Y. Crowell Publishers New York. 1908 The early 20th century decorative leather book is a translation that Jewett undertook a version of the complex Middle English poem The Pearl in the original meter and selected lyrics such as a "Nativity Song" adapted from the work of Jacopone da Todi. The "Pearl Poet" or the "Gawain Poet" is the name given to the author of Pearl an alliterative poem written in 14th-century Middle English known from a single surviving manuscript the British Library holding Cotton Nero A.x. This body of work includes some of the greatest poetry written in Middle English. The Pearl Poet remains unidentified. Some scholarship has argued to assign the poem to one John Massey a member of the landed gentry from Cheshire. This attribution of the poems of Cotton Nero A.x is not widely accepted however reflected in the ongoing use of the labels "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet." Title: The Pearl A Middle English Poem A Modern Version in the Metre of the Original Author: "Pearl Poet" Sophie Jewett Translator Associate Professor of English Literature in Wellesley College. Publisher: Thomas Y. Crowell Publishers New York. Edition: Copyright 1908; Published September 1908. Third Thousand. Binding/description: Finely rebound circa 1920 3/4 burgundy leather over marble paper boards gilt decorated spine with five raised bands matching marble endpapers upper gilt leaf edge. Author Note: Jewett initially published poetry under the pseudonym Ellen Burroughs borrowed from her mother's name. Fellow poet Richard Watson Gilder called her a true poet with a golden gift. Miss Jewett was said to be shy and self-critical about her poetry and disliked the process of offering her books up for publication and she was said to possess a sharp wit and was skilled at repartee. Sophie Jewett was a writer of faith and vision. Dimensions: 0.5 W × 5 D × 6.75 H inches. Condition Notes: Fine; light to be expected wear with age and use strong square spine light age-toned text pages. A beautiful copy. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. Thomas Y. Pearl Bailey

Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. Original price of $5.75 intact on front flap. A warmly inscribed copy to Dick Cecil one of the founders of the Atlanta Jazz Festival. Light creasing and wear to edges and folds.

Dick Cecil former Vice-President of the Atlanta Braves and President of Braves Productions Inc. was one of the last old school baseball scouts in America. Instrumental in moving the Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta Cecil rose quickly through the ranks of baseball scout to management. Later in his career he was tasked by Ted Turner to find ways for more revenue from the Braves assets. This assignment led to the founding of the Atlanta Jazz Festival and bringing major league soccer to Atlanta Chiefs in 1967. Cecil was a founding member of the North American Soccer League NASL. As if this wasn't enough Dick was known for his support of the desegregation of sports in America at a time when this was less than popular. His work with Hank over the years led to a lifelong friendship that he was very proud of. Thanks for your life and work Dick you were one of a kind and you are missed. Harcourt, Brace & World unknown

['Stream']. [PEARL, Cyril Altson, editor]
Stream. Volume I Number 1 July 1931
Melbourne: Stream 1931. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Melbourne Stream 1931. Small quarto 48 pages. Three-colour pictorial wrappers a little stained and worn but now expertly conserved; minor signs of age and use shallow light tidemarks to most leading edges some contemporary pencilling; overall a decent copy of a rare item. The first issue of this short-lived avant-garde journal it folded after Volume I Number 3 September 1931 together with a copy of the original prospectus small quarto a bifolium with a three-colour illustration on the first page slightly marked and lightly nibbled around the edges. The striking modernist cover design for the prospectus and the first two issues is by Jack Maughan.
'"Stream" answered remarkably well a particular need - which will always be present in Australia - the need for good translations of current European writing. It printed translations done by Australians of stories essays and poems contributed to European periodicals by such leading overseas writers artists and musicians as Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes Fernand Leger Arthur Honegger Valentin Katayev Mayakovski Frederic Lefevre Carmelo Puglionisi and "Azorin" José Martinez Ruiz. "Stream" also through its poetry editor Bertram Higgins aroused interest in the spare ironical intellectual poetry of Eliot and of the French symbolists who preceded him . "Stream" was unable to last for more than three issues partly because of the depression and partly because in editor Pearl's words "the self-appointed business manager got away with all the subscription money"' John Tregenza: 'Australian Little Magazines 1923-1954' pages 39-44 including a full-page illustration of the cover artwork of Number 3 'the work of the gifted young Melbourne artist Dominic Leon who was killed not long afterwards in a street accident'. 2 items. [JAPANESE WWII FILM - ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOUR AND OFF MALAYA].
ハワイマレー沖海戦. Hawai Marē-oki kaisen. Poster of a 1942 film Sea Battles of Hawaii and Off Malaya
東宝. Toho Film. circa2002. Colour poster 72.5 x 52cm. Very good copy. This poster was published as part of the promotion of the 2002 release of the remastered DVD editions of this 1942 Japanese film. Various scenes from the film are featured in order to reproduce the atmosphere during the Pacific War. The original film was immensely popular in Japan when it was first released in 1942 as it depicted Japanese victories in Hawaii and Malaya. The film was directed by Kajiro Yamamoto with special effects used in its depiction of the Pearl Harbour attack and Malayan sea battles created by Eiji Tsuburaya who eventually went on to produce films such as Godzilla series and other monster films. The original special effects in the film was innovative as miniature recreations of the scenes were merged with the original news reel films showing the battles. . 東宝. [Toho Film] unknown

[JAPANESE FLEET - ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR].
ハワイ攻撃機動部隊. Hawai kōgeki kidōbutai. Japanese Mobile Force in Hawaii Campaign
Japan. No date. Late 20th Century. Very long striking blue and white scroll showing the Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor. Scale: 1:1000. Occasional light marking but overall in very good condition. 53 x 304 cm. An intriguing representational print that displays the entire Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941. An exceptionally long print approximately 300cm in length and 53cm in width presented as a scroll with roller at one end every one of the 11 warships and 30 submarines involved in the Pearl Harbor campaign are depicted in an abstract form each with a caption giving their name. Some ships also bear the names of their commanders. It's highly probable that this scroll was created to commemorate the attack in the post-Pacific War era. . unknown
