Rara "edizione originale". �Mariotte ca. 1620-1684 published four important treatises between 1679 and 1681 which are rarely found united in a single volume. This particular study of color recounting his experiments with prisms is decidedly the most important of the four. In it Mariotte criticizes both Newton�s theories on this topic as well as the more mechanical ones expressed by Descartes. His studies of the rings that are occasionally visible around both the sun and the moon were important additions to optic theory regarding the atmosphere�. Cfr.
