La première édition, parue chez Hénault, date de 1668. Suit en 1675 la présente seconde édition, parue chez l'auteur, corrigée par celui-ci et augmentée de quelques figures ; puis encore cinq (la dernière en 1740). Fort apprécié et réputé, l'ouvrage est rédigé en français afin de vulgariser la connaissance scientifique et la rendre ainsi accessible aux sages-femmes. L'auteur est l'un des premiers spécialistes de l'obstétrique, discipline accédant par la rédaction de ce traité au statut de spécialité médicale à part entière. A la fois théoricien (faut-il privilégier la mère ou bien l'enfant dans les cas d'accouchements 'contre nature', notamment au regard des précepts religieux ?) autant que praticien (gestes, postures, soins avant, pendant, après l'accouchement), Mauriceau compile et organise une somme de savoirs indispensables au bon déroulement des naissances, qui par sa large diffusion (traduction en six langues) fera sortir l'accouchement des mystères qui jusque là l'entouraient. Quelques idées erronées furent mises à mal. L'iconographie totalise 8 pl. in-texte et 22 fig. in-texte. Il s'agit de gravures en taille douce (burin) réalisées d'après les dessins de Paul-Androuet Du Cerceau. Elles décrivent l'anatomie féminine, les positions foetales, le foetus et le placenta, puis les instruments nécessaires aux différents soins. Précises et pédagogiques, ces images sont aussi le reflet de leur époque ; ainsi la cinquième figure (p. 27) représente 'la partie honteuse' de la femme. Cette image est cependant sous-titrée "Cette figure paroistra peut-estre aux yeux chastes en une posture indécente ; mais il la souffriront s'il leur plaist, puisqu'elle est aussi necessaire qu'elle est commode, pour faire voir plusieurs particules, qui sont cachées sous cette partie honteuse". Cul-de-lampe, lettrines et bandeaux ponctuent également le texte. François Mauriceau (1637-1709) : né et mort à Paris ; chirurgien-obstétricien, considéré comme l'un des pères de l'obstétrique moderne ; fut prévôt de la Communauté de Saint-Côme puis garde de Compagnie des maîtres chirurgiens jurés de la ville de Paris ; ses ouvrages et sa pratique eurent un immense succès ; a aussi écrit en latin. Paul Androuet Du Cerceau (1630?-1710) : dessinateur, graveur, orfèvre, commissaire aux gabelles ; fils de Jacques Androuet Du Cerceau, célèbre architecte, graveur, théoricien. Ex-libris manuscrit au contreplat inférieur "Ce présent livre appartient à moy Francois Philippe (?) ce vingt-quatrième juillet 1720". Ex-libris manuscrit au contreplat supérieur "Ce livre appartient au Sieur Petit Jean chirurgien à Baijon (?) Ce 12 aout 1760".
