‎Première édition dans une bel reliure. Jules Sichel (1802-68) naquit à Francfort d'une famille israélite. Etudes de médicine à Wurzbourg ou il obtinait en 1823 son premier travail comme chef de clinique chez Prof. Johann Lucas Schönlein, “l'un des médicins les plus éminents du siècle”. A cette époque le seul qui a fait beaucoup pour le progrès de la science ophthalmologique était Prof. Friedrich Jaeger à Vienne. Pour completer ses études Sichel était à Vienne en 1825 à 1829 chez Jaeger, qui devint son maître et son ami. Sichel arriva en 1829 à Paris. A partir de sa naturalisation comme français en 1834 “la réputation, les honneurs et aussi les profits matériels, vinrent trouver Jules Sichel; son cabinet particulier de consultations, sa clinique de la rue Férou, ouverte en 1836, virent affluer une foule de déshérités de la vue; le nom de spécialiste vola de bouche en bouche, s'étendent sur toute l'Europe, volant en Amerique; des ministres, des princes, des rois, allèrent plus d'une fois frapper à la porte de la rue de la Chausée-d'Antin”. Sichel était aussi au niveau intellectuel une personalité extraordinaire: “lisant le Coran comme un ulema, et la Bible comme un rabbin, traduisant à livre ouvert le grec et le latin, écrivant le français avec un style clair et facile, le parlant avec un léger accent tudesque qui avait je ne sais quel charme particulier.” La liste de publications de Sichel se rend “au moins 152 mémoires tant sur l'oculistique, sur l'entomologie, que sur la littérature, l'histoire et l'archéologie. Nur die deutsche und lateinsche Ausgabe haben jedoch die Original-Tafeln nach den Zeichnungen von Chr. Köck. Alle vier Teile zusammen von grosser Seltenheit, hier in einem Vorzugsexemplar auf starkem Velin-Papier und in einem sehr dekorativen, wohlerhaltenen Einband. - Stellenweise, meist im Schnitt, leicht stockfleckig.
