FIRST EDITION of the Croonian Lecture in which Joseph Lister demonstrated the cause of blood coagulation. "Lister exploded the theory that blood coagulation is due to ammonia and showed that in the blood vessels it depends upon their injury. He further showed that by carrying out the strictest precautions he could keep blood free from putrefaction indefinitely thus supporting his theory that bacteria were the cause of wound suppuration." Garrison-Morton 871. "In 1863 Lister embarked upon experiments that were designed to examine the idea that clotting was due to the liberation of ammonia. Almost incidentally he made the important discovery that blood remained partially fluid for several hours in a vulcanized India-rubber tube but clotted promptly in an ordinary cup" Wintrobe Blood Pure and Eloquent 619. Lister concluded that the real cause of coagulation of the blood is "the influence exerted upon it by ordinary matter the contact of which for a very brief period effects a change in the blood inducing a mutual reaction between its solid and fluid constituents in which the corpuscles impart to the liquor sanguinis a disposition to coagulate" Lister. Exterior: Handsomely bound in half calf over marbled paper boards. Five raised bands at the spine. Chipped red morocco gilt-lettered spine label; another label appears to be missing; very slight ghosting remains where a library label apparently was. Scuffing and rubbing at the edges a bit more so at the head and foot of the spine. Professionally rendered Japanese paper repair at the spine. Tightly and very solidly bound. Interior: Complete. Ex-libris stamps to title and contents page; Springfield Library plate on rear pastedown. Marbled endpapers and pages. Bright and clean throughout. The Lister paper is pristine. A second edition appeared in 1768 and this third edition, which includes his essay on the effects of bloodletting, in 1772.

IX566XIX pp. textillustr. and 6 plates. Stokes' paper: pp. 355-64. 1 textillustr. � Firts printing of this landmark paper being the first to describe the function of blood in chemical terms. Stokes records the optical spectra of "cruorine" hemoglobin during the process of respiration and reports two widely different spectra for the oxidised and non oxidised form. He also shows that the spectra are different when the animal part of the product is omitted. He concludes from his experiments that oxygen is weakly bound to the norganic compound of the blood "cruorine".<br>"Discovery that oxygen can be removed from haemoglobin by reducing agents." The Healing of Arteries after Ligature in Man and Animals.

This monograph is of basic importance to one of the primary concerns of surgery--the successful healing of ligated vessels and the avoidance of delayed postoperative bleeding. Warren opens the book with a comprehensive historical review of the use of ligatures, noting that their first use was mentioned by Susrutas in 1500 B.C. He conducts an excellent review of studies on the effect of ligation and the results of many observations in both man and animals are recorded. The author points out that "The history of this research is, in fact, a history of the rise and gradual development of the science of cellular pathology" (p. 47). The fifteen plates depict patterns of cellular proliferation within ligated vessels, and how the result may be either secure or faulty healing. Warren was the son of Jonathan Mason Warren and the grandson of John Collins Warren who performed the first operation under ether anesthesia. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Warren served on the faculty as professor of surgery and practiced in the Boston area. (Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2051). Formerly in the library of the Birmingham Medical Institute.
