Das "System der Chirurgie" umfaßt über 3000 Seiten. - Philipp Franz von Walther (1782-1849) studierte in Heidelberg und Wien bei Peter Frank und dem Ophthalmologen Beer, promovierte 1803 in Landshut, wurde kurz darauf mit 21 Jahren in Bamberg Prof. und Medizinalrat und 1804 Prof. der Physiologie und Chirurgie in Landshut, 1811 Rektor der Universität. 1818 wurde er nach Bonn berufen, 1830 nach München, wo er auch zum Geh. Rat und königl. Leibarzt ernannt wurde. Er war der führende Chirurg und Ophthalmologe seiner Zeit in Deutschland und beschrieb als erster die Hornhautflecken (Garrison/Morton 5860).‎
