With a woodcut coat-of-arms on the title-page and typographical head- and tailpieces. 10 384 18 pp. First edition of the German version of the Pharmacopoeia Austriaco-Provincialis first published in 1774. Many editions of both the original Latin and German translation followed. Based on a thorough analysis it can be determined that pharmaceutical care was on a high level in the area of South-Eastern Europe and that it followed the scholarly pharmacy in the Habsburg monarchy.The necessity to publish the pharmacopoeia in German was because it was used by minor medical professions without knowledge of Latin such as surgeons. A Dutch translation of the pharmacopoeia entitled Apotheek der Oostenrijksche Staaten which was based on the edition of 1775 was published in Rotterdam in 1780. The content and the format of the new pharmacopoeia had changed dramatically compared to the former one. While the Viennese Dispensatory represented a Baroque pharmacopoeia in size and in its abundance of recipes the new Pharmacopoeia Austriaco-Provincialis was a rather small booklet with a drastically reduced number of formulations.Two sections built up the body of the pharmacopoeia. The first one cited the Materia Pharmaceutica minerals crude drugs of plant and animal origin in separate chapters mentioning the Latin name the scientific identification and the Austrian local name of all items. Another chapter listed the chemical characters some of them still representing alchemical signs. The second part consisted of formulated preparations in alphabetical order followed by an index. ‎8 95 pp.Medical ordinances and a list of the new taxes on nearly 2000 named medicinal components. As the Habsburgs in the 1770Â’s attempted to strengthen their control over the professional standards and business activity of pharmacists and medical personnel in their realms the authorities imposed new taxes on behalf of Empress Maria Theresa covering all components of medicaments described and prescribed in the Pharmacopoea Austriaco-Provinciali the official book of pharmacological recipes for the entire Habsburg empire with editions published almost every year from 1776 to ca. 1822. The ordinance on the subject was promulgated on 25 November 1775 and took affect on 1 January 1776 so the 1776 edition was clearly the first but the 1790 edition calls itself the second. It is therefore not certain whether the present copy is the true second edition or a reissue of the first. The ordinance pp. 3-8 of the preliminaries is signed by Christian August Graf von Seilern Statthalter and Thomas Ignaz Freiherr von Pöct Kanzler and contains seven points including sanctions and criminal procedures in case of fraud. ‎1 1 blank 8 237 15 pp.Second revised and enlarged edition of the Brussels pharmacopoeia. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605 but failed to do so. A 1636 plague however incited city magistrates to compile a pharmacopoeia and they commissioned four leading city physicians Joannes Jocquet Paulus de Hullegarde Ludovicus Fabri and Joannes De Lau not mentioned on the title-page but acknowledged by name in the preliminaries to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia which appeared in 1641. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636 based in part on Valerius but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model.With an ownership inscription by "Franciscus" dated 1716 on the paste-down and title-page and a another inscription below the colophon possibly in a different hand noting that the book was a gift from Louis Riqueur ca. 1655-1737 apothecary of King Philip V of Spain. ‎Exemplaire n°6 de cet impressionnant fac-similé du Codex Borbonicus accompagné des commentaires explicatifs en allemand de Karl Anton Nowotny (1904-1978), ethnographe, historien de l'art et universitaire autrichien, spécialisé dans l'étude des cultures mésoaméricaines. Comme lindique une note glissée dans le volume dexplications, il sagit dun des 100 exemplaires de tête ayant été réservés pour la collection du Musée du Livre. Ce fac-similé reproduit à lidentique le document original en respectant léchelle, la couleur et même lapparence ainsi que les caractéristiques physiques de celui-ci. Les bords de la reliure ont en effet été rognés pour imiter les imperfections et accidents de celle-ci. Le codex Borbonicus est un manuscrit mésoaméricain peint sur du papier d'amate et plié en paravent. Ce document pictographique de tradition nahua servait de rituel divinatoire, mais aussi de diurnal pour la célébration des fêtes religieuses. Si sa date d'exécution exacte demeure inconnue, elle est néanmoins estimée aux alentours de la conquête espagnole du Mexique, c'est-à-dire entre la fin du XVe et le début du XVIe siècle. De la sorte, il n'est pas possible d'affirmer avec certitude s'il s'agit d'un authentique codex préhispanique ou alors, à contrario, d'un ouvrage colonial. Le codex Borbonicus tient son nom du Palais Bourbon où il est conservé dans les collections de la Bibliothèque de l'Assemblée nationale sous la cote Y120. Si les méso américanistes ne tombent pas tous daccord sur lorigine de cet ouvrage, la faible quantité de documents aztèques retrouvés fait de ce manuscrit lun des héritages les plus précieux qui ait pu être préservé. Le Codex Borbonicus est un guide pour comprendre comment le temps était perçu et décrit par les Aztèques d'avant la conquête. Il est magnifiquement illustré en utilisant les couleurs et le style pictographique caractéristique des manuscrits nahua. Particulièrement bien connu pour son illustration de la nouvelle cérémonie du feu, il propose un éventail de représentations d'objets rituels, de divinités, d'imitateurs de divinités, de cérémonies et de structures. Petite note imprimée glissée avant la page de titre : Cette édition qui reproduit en fac-similé le Codex Borbonicus de la bibliothèque du Palais-Bourbon à Paris, accompagné de létude réalisée par Karl Anton Nowotny et Jacqueline de Durant-Forest, a été limitée à cinq cents exemplaires dont cent, numérotés de 1 à 100, ont été réservés pour la collection du Musée du Livre. Copy no. 6 of this impressive facsimile of the Codex Borbonicus, with explanatory comments in German by Karl Anton Nowotny (1904-1978), an Austrian ethnographer, art historian and academic specializing in the study of Mesoamerican cultures. As indicated by a note in the explanatory volume, this is one of the 100 first copies reserved for the Musée du Livre collection. This facsimile reproduces the original document identically, respecting its scale, color, appearance and physical characteristics. The edges of the binding have been trimmed to limit imperfections and accidents. The codex Borbonicus is a Mesoamerican manuscript painted on amate paper and folded into a folding screen. This pictographic document of Nahua tradition served as a divinatory ritual, as well as a diurnal for the celebration of religious feasts. Although its exact date of execution remains unknown, it is estimated to have been made around the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, i.e. between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is therefore not possible to state with certainty whether it is an authentic pre-Hispanic codex or, on the contrary, a colonial work. The Codex Borbonicus takes its name from the Palais Bourbon, where it is kept in the collections of the Bibliothèque de l'Assemblée Nationale under the number Y120. Although Mesoamericanists do not all agree on the origin of this work, the small quantity of Aztec documents found makes this manuscript one of the most precious heirlooms to have been preserved. The Codex Borbonicus is a guide to understanding how time was perceived and described by the pre-conquest Aztecs. It is beautifully illustrated using the color and pictographic style characteristic of Nahua manuscripts. Particularly well known for its illustration of the new fire ceremony, it features a range of depictions of ritual objects, deities, deity imitators, ceremonies and structures. Small printed note slipped in before the title page: "This edition, which reproduces in facsimile the Codex Borbonicus from the Palais-Bourbon library in Paris, accompanied by the study by Karl Anton Nowotny and Jacqueline de Durant-Forest, was limited to five hundred copies, of which one hundred, numbered from 1 to 100, were reserved for the Musée du Livre collection. The edition was produced in Graz, Austria, on the presses of the Akademische Druck-U. Verlagsanstalt in 1974. Copy 6. Club du livre, Paris, 28 rue Fortuny, Paris 17." A fine copy, unfortunately separated from its slipcase but well preserved, of this remarkable facsimile of one of the most precious Aztec documents.‎
