Aviation, Helicopters, HF. Gregory H. F.
Firsthand Account of Early Helicopters "Anything A Horse Can Do" by Col. H.F. Gregory Signed First Edition 1944
1944. Aviation W.W.II Technology and Engineering Gregory H. F. Anything a Horse Can Do: The Story of the Helicopter. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock 1944. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To Mrs. Catherine C. Simokat / With kindest regards / H.F. Gregory / Col. A.U.S. / 11-30-44.†First edition. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Original binding in pictorial dust jacket printed in red yellow and white with illustrations of a Pegasus and a helicopter

An engaging early work on rotary-wing aviation Anything a Horse Can Do was published during World War II when helicopters were only just beginning to emerge as practical tools in military and rescue operations. Colonel H. F. Gregory then serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces and recognized as a leading authority on experimental aircraft crafted this account to demystify the helicopter for general readers. The volume explores the invention mechanics and piloting of helicopters in clear accessible prose aiming to educate a public increasingly aware of aviation’s wartime and peacetime potential. Gregory combines historical narrative technical explanation and speculative futurism asking whether “we shall soon have a helicopter in every garage or on our own rooftops.†He traces key engineering breakthroughs emphasizes the helicopter’s tactical flexibility compared to fixed-wing aircraft and imagines civilian adaptations. As Chief of Miscellaneous Aircraft Projects for the U.S. Engineering Division Gregory’s contributions to the helicopter aviation field included the first high-speed naval deck landings. Dust jacket significantly chipped along upper and lower edges with multiple short tears and areas of loss especially along the top and bottom margins of front panel back panel and spine. Corners and spine ends bumped. Toning and age spotting to inner pages binding firm. Author’s full-page inscription remains bold and legible. Overall good condition in a fair jacket. A signed wartime account by a key military aviation figure this volume captures the imagination surrounding the helicopter at the dawn of its modern deployment. unknown
