With pencilled notes in Benois's hand. <br /> <br /> Very slightly soiled; 35 mm. tear to blank right margin repaired; remnants of mounting paper to upper corners of verso. Possibly a preparatory drawing for the Tsaritsa's costume. <br /> <br /> Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera Coq d'Or The Golden Cockerel was first performed in Moscow at the Solodovnikov Theatre Sergey Ivanovich Zimin’s private opera company on September 24/October 7 1909. It is in a prologue three acts and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel’sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin based in turn on ‘The House of the Weathercock’ and ‘Legend of the Arabian Astrologer’ from The Alhambra by Washington Irving.<br /> <br /> "The Golden Cockerel is the only one of Rimsky- Korsakov’s 15 operas to have achieved repertory status beyond Russia. This was Dyagilev’s doing. At the prompting of the artist Alexandre Benois the great impresario staged the opera in Paris and London in 1914 under the title Le coq d’or which has stuck to it in the West with the singers seated in rows at the sides of the stage accompanying the movements of dancers and mimes who enacted the plot according to the conventions of ballet d’action choreography by Fokin. It also set an important precedent for Stravinsky whose opera The Nightingale not to mention such later stage works as Renard The Wedding and Pulcinella to a greater or lesser extent embodied the same split between singing and movement. It was an important stage in the modernist dismantling of the Gesamtkunstwerk." "In 1901 he was appointed scenic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg the performance space for the Imperial Russian Ballet. He moved to Paris in 1905 and thereafter devoted most of his time to stage design and decor. During these years his work with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes was groundbreaking. His sets and costumes for the productions of Les Sylphides 1909 Giselle 1910 and Petrushka 1911 are counted among his greatest triumphs. One of the great "old school" violinsts here gives persuasive performances of regrettably seldom-heard gems of the late Romantic Era. The Arensky Concerto 1900 is dedicated to Leopold Auer. The Rimsky-Korsakov Fantasy on Two Russian Themes 1887 was later revised and elaborated by Leopold Auer. The Wieniawski Concert Polonaise 1852-53 displays a level of virtuosity and understanding of the instrument that only a great performr-composer could produce. Contains informative Liner Notes by Richard Freed. CONDITION: Overall Very Good Minus I'd say to be safe. The Arensky Concerto side has moderate surface noise including occasional pops and crackles less so as the side progresses; the Rimsky-Korsakov track has moderate surface noise but fewer pops and crackles; the fuller-textured Wieniawski sounds the cleanest of the three. Its jacket has some edge- and corner-wear as well as some ring-wear but is unmarked uncreased and has no edge-splits The LP is now in a new audiophile inner sleeve replacing the plain original and the entire album is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve. It will be cleaned again before being securely packed and promptly shipped domestically USA and internationally. <br/> <br/> Vox Turnabout unknown‎

'What could be more sublime than a wall of dark rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising ornate walls of a great cathedral Not much and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album Sacred Treasures I which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov Tchaikovsky and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies including solo passages Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father" which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. It is testament to his mastery of colorful orchestration epic choral scenes and depiction of unusual characters contrasting the disarming honesty of its heroine Fevronia with the amorality of its vagrant anti-hero Grishka.Provenance: Archive Jean ROBIN. Jean Robin was an impressario of the dance administrator and Director of tours of the ballets of the Champs-Elysées from 1945 to 1951 creator and director of the Festival Internationnal de Danse de Paris from 1963 to 1989 artistic director of the theater of the Champs-Elysées from 1954 to 1967 creator and director of the festival "Mai de Versailles" from 1961 to 1977 general secretary of the Orchestra of Paris from 1967 to 1976 director of the theater of the Gaité Lyrique from 1967 to 1973 vice-president of the International Center of the dance . Jean Robin is considered a pioneer for having established an annual event of truly international scope dedicated to dance in all its forms. He collaborated with many artists Cocteau Boris Kochno Sauguet Auric Roland Petit Jean Babilée Maurice Béjart Rudolf Noureev. This is the exceedingly rare Rimsky-Korsakov orchestral conductor's version reprinted by Kalmus from its 1896 or 1908 Russian publication later associated with composer-conductior Ippolitov-Ivanov's late-1920s Bolshoi revival version in which he re-orchestrated the scene at Blazhenny Cathedral. CONTENTS: See accompanying scan image of the Table of Contents. it is only in Russian-Cyrillic language throughout the two-volume score - 391 & 416 pages. CONDITION: I've graded these as GOOD since both volumes are unmarked with the score pages all clearly legible. Rescued from a composer's long-term storage there are several shortcomings: VOL.I - is missing its original Kalmus green covers but I have fashioned sturdy card-stock replacements. The pages are unmarked and uncreased with a few having instances of light discoloration in the margins. This GOOD PLUS volume is securely-bound. VOL.II - shows the page-rippling of long-past water incursion and though securely bound in its original covers there is a bit of spine-lean. The pages are unmarked but several show previous creasing. As with Vol.I Vol.II has some spine reinforcing with library hinge-tape. Nevertheless these are quite respectable and useful copies. NOTE: Due to this item's size and weight ca.5.75 pounds securely packed an additional shipping fee must be charged for international shipping and domestic USA Priority mail.
