4/12/33. <p>The Gentlewomen's League of Washington was an organization particularly active during the Great Depression and was one of the most successful women’s exchanges in the country. Any funds which were collected above the necessary expenses of running the League were turned into a fund for helping the needy women who were constantly coming to the organization for aid. Many of these had once been of means but had been financially stranded by the Depression. Moreover every member of the board gave of her own private funds toward support of the League and hundreds of women sold their goods through the League giving them an income when money was hard to come by.</p><p><strong>Typed letter signed</strong> on White House stationery Washington December 4 1933 to Mrs. William Aspinwall expressing her willingness to support the League financially. <em>“I have asked my housekeeper to keep the Gentlewomen’s League in mind and to buy what she can from there. The White House. A typed letter signed Eleanor Roosevelt as First Lady dated during World War Two. On White House letterhead Roosevelt wrote to about the problem of providing relief to Greeks who were starving due to a war-related famine. Dear Mrs. Butler: I have your letter and a copy of Senate Resolution 100. Such a resolution would have no value. Everyone would like to be able to feed the people of Europe. The State Department and Governor Lehmans committee are doing everything they can. The pattern for Greece cannot be followed because Greece has nothing the Germans could take out. The difficulties of transportation add greatly to the problem. It is heartbreking sic to think of starving children and I know every effort is being made to work out some plan which will not prolong the war. Very sincerely yours Eleanor Roosevelt. Lehman refers to former Governor of New York Herbert Lehman who was working with the State Department and United Nations on such relief efforts. A typed letter signed Eleanor Roosevelt as First Lady. On The White House letterhead Roosevelt discusses her famous Presidential dog Fala the Scottish Terrier: Dear Mrs. Tucker: Thank you for your letter. There have been so many things written about Falla sic and there is also a movie and I do not think there is anything I could add to the story of Falla sic and the Princesses. In any case I will not be in New York City with any free time for the next several weeks. Very sincerely yours Eleanor Roosevelt. The movie Roosevelt refers to was produced by MGM about life in the White House. During his final Presidential campaign the following year FDR would make a speech refuting claims that he had forgotten Fala in the Aleutian Islands and sent a destroyer to reclaim him at taxpayer expense saying that he felt justified in objecting to libel surrounding his dog. Fala is represented alongside FDR on his memorial in Washington D.C. It is in very good condition with an area of toning. unknown

Griffith Director of Oregon's Works Projects Administration WPA during the presidency of the authors husband Franklin D. Roosevelt. <br /><br />Eleanors inscription inked in three lines in black on the half title reads To Mr. & Mrs. E. J. Griffith with warm regards & thanks Eleanor Roosevelt. Affixed to the facing front free endpaper recto is the illustrated bookplate of EMERSON J. GRIFFITH prominently displaying Timberline Lodge with Mt. Hood in the background. <br /><br />Condition is very good in a good plus dust jacket. The binding of quarter black cloth over brick red cloth-covered boards is square tight and clean with only trivial shelf wear to the corners and spine ends. The contents are clean with no spotting. FIRST EDITION is helpfully printed on the title page verso. Mild age-toning appears substantially confined to the otherwise clean page edges. The dust jacket has a neatly price-clipped upper front flap wear to the joints and flap folds a small stain to the lower rear joint and a toned spine. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover. <br /><br />As Oregons WPA Director the recipient Emerson Griffith 1884-1965 conceived and spearheaded construction of the famous Timberline Lodge located at an elevation of nearly 6000 feet on the south side of Mount Hood. More than just a praiseworthy structure the 40000 square foot Timberline Lodge is a National Historic Landmark that today attracts more than 2 million visitors per year. At the time the Lodge proved a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to harness a remarkable convocation of artists and craftsmen who desperately needed the work during the Great Depression. The result was an explosion of creativity much the same as what made Europes soaring Gothic cathedrals such masterpieces. Griffith in a telegram said of the work These men indeed feel they are putting their skill into a cathedral. Come up from the depths of despair they work with a spiritual exaltation that sometimes amazes me. On 28 September 1937 President Roosevelt was present to dedicate Timberline Lodge a ceremony carried live on radio. Timberline Hotel remains an enduring monument to the best impulses and outcomes of Roosevelts WPA. The iconic silhouette of Timberline Lodge is widely recognized and served as the exterior of the hotel in the movie The Shining 1980. <br /><br />Called First Lady of the World by President Truman for her humanitarian work Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 was the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962 and the longest-serving first lady of the United States. <br /><br />India and the Awakening East is Eleanor Roosevelts account of her 1952 journey through the Middle East and Far East including Lebanon Pakistan Syria Trans-Jordan Israel and India. <br /><br />Newly independent India was trying to establish a functional democracy and had just held its first general elections between October 1951 and February 1952. Fractiously engaged with Pakistan and a notional geopolitical counterweight to communist China India was of increasing importance to the West. The political landscape and considerations do not sound appreciably different nearly three quarters of a century later. Likewise enduring is the first-person perspective of someone as astute engaged seasoned and engaging as ER particular as a witness to Indias nascence. <br /><br />While the trip was unofficial such was Eleanors stature and temperament that she could never be an unaffecting observer. Eleanor published this book in 1933 concurrent with the first inauguration of her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt in part as a declaration of her intended transformative approach to the role of First Lady. <br /><br />This example is a strikingly bright and clean fine example in a very good minus dust jacket. The light teal cloth binding printed in dark teal and black is beautifully clean square and tight with sharp corners and no appreciable wear. The contents are likewise remarkably clean free of spotting or previous ownership marks. The deckled fore and bottom edges are likewise immaculate. The top edge shows only a trivial hint of shelf dust. The dust jacket is unclipped retaining the original $1.25 front flap price and substantially complete with only fractional loss to the joint and flap fold extremities. The jacket is also notably clean. There is a 1.5 inch 3.81 cm closed tear with attendant wrinkling to the lower right of the front face and light overall wear to the extremities and joints. The spine is evenly toned but the blue title and author print a notably unliberated Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt remains clearly legible. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover. <br /><br />Called First Lady of the World by President Truman for her humanitarian work Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 was the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962 and the longest-serving first lady of the United States. <br /><br />When her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was running for president in the fall of 1932 as the likely election winner Eleanor had already independently made for herself a name in Democratic politics as a spokesperson for the newly enfranchised woman voter labor advocate in the midst of the Great Depression a vocal promoter of civil rights and the head of the Womens Division of the Democratic National Committee since 1928. She feared her impending role as First Lady a heretofore purely social and apolitical role would necessitate a quieting of her convictions and force her to step down from her political positions; she even told friends that she would divorce FDR should he win rather than lose her independence. <br /><br />After FDRs unprecedented victory securing 42 of 48 states Eleanor made the decision to transform her new position rather than yield to it. In January she announced that she would write and publish a book before the March inauguration. The result was Its Up to the Women which was as The Hartford Courant called it a book of general counsel and advice on pretty well everything from dish-washing to high diplomacy. Topics ranged from recipes for hot stuffed eggs to advice for women in negotiating salaries equal to their male counterparts to counsel for women seeking public office. Critically Eleanor tied her husbands promise of a New Deal to the civic engagement of the American woman. On April 25 1945 as Allied victory drew close representatives of the member states met in San Francisco to write a treaty for a postwar UN that could arbitrate international disputes without conflict and prevent another world cataclysm. President Truman said to the opening of the conference “The world has experienced a revival of an old faith in the everlasting moral force of justice. At no time in history has there been a more important Conference or a more necessary meeting than this one in San Francisco which you are opening today. On behalf of the American people I extend to you a most hearty welcome.†Americans followed news of the proceedings in San Francisco with intense interest.</p><p>""On June 26 50 nations signed the new United Nations Charter the founding document of the largest international organization in world history. In a preamble and 19 chapters the Charter lays out the rules and structure of the UN and describes how the body works for global peace security and human rights. President Truman closed the United Nations Conference on that day with hope for the promise and possibility of the new international organization: “Upon all of us in all our countries is now laid the duty of transforming into action these words which you have written. Upon our decisive action rests the hope of those who have fallen those now living those yet unborn — the hope for a world of free countries — with decent standards of living — which will work and cooperate in a friendly civilized community of nations. This new structure of peace is rising upon strong foundations. Let us not fail to grasp this supreme chance to establish a world-wide rule of reason — to create an enduring peace under the guidance of God.â€</p><p>""On July 2 President Truman brought a copy of the Charter into the Senate and gave a plainspoken yet heartfelt address urging ratification. The end of World War II should have resulted in the end of the Allied joint occupation of Iran. Instead pro-Soviet Iranians proclaimed the separatist Azerbaijan People's Government and the Kurdish separatist Republic of Mahabad. The United States pressure on the Soviet Union to withdraw is the earliest evidence of success with the new strategy of Truman Doctrine and containment.</p><p>This was the main but not the only subject of the first UN Security Council Session on US soil.</p><p>On March 25 the first ever US-based meeting of the Security Council met at Hunter College.</p><p><strong>Document signed</strong> March 25 1946 bearing the signatures of the major attendees of the first Security Council meeting in its new home country. <em>""On 25 March 1946 the United Nations Security Council Met at Hunter College.""</em> Here is a list of the signatories a who's who of the new post war international order and the history of the United Nations. No other similar compilation of signatures exists. It must have been assembled at the time of the meetings themselves. The United Nations was slightly more than one year old and the location of the permanent Headquarters had yet to be decided. In the interim the Organization needed a large space to accommodate the hundreds of attendees to the General Assembly. New York City offered the use of its former World’s Fair building in Queens. The 1939 New York World's Fair saw more than 45 million visitors many of whom entered this building to see the exhibits on the functions of the city. When it was over the building was converted into a recreation centre with skating rinks until being offered to the United Nations in April 1946. The first General Assembly in New York had “One World†as its theme. To emphasize this fact a large map of the world in blue and gold was installed behind the President of the General Assembly’s rostrum.</p><p>Outside the flags of the then 51 Member States were put on the longest poles which could be procured and placed in a large circle.
