- Nadar, Paris 1862, Photographie : 5,1x8,5cm / Carton : 6,3x10,3cm, une photographie. - Photographic portrait of Charles Baudelaire with his hands in his pockets Nadar | Paris 1862 | Photograph: 5.1 x 8.5 cm / Cardboard: 6.3 x 10.3 cm | one photograph Extremely rare original photograph showing Charles Baudelaire on albumen paper, contemporary print in carte de visite format, mounted on a board from the Nadar workshop, 35 boulevart (sic) des Capucines; "Photographic portrait for us taken by Nadar. Taken the same day as the previous one, same dimensions, same clothes. The waistcoat is still unbuttoned but Baudelaire hides his hands in the pockets of his trousers. Seen face on, he seems more troubled and sadder than in the previous attempt." (Ourousof, 1896) "Another carte de visite from the same day as the previous no. 41 [...] a contemporary albumen print found in the Musée d'Orsay collections (Provenance: from the Braive collection, then the Marie-Thérèse and André Jammes collection, 1991, acquired by the Musées Nationaux with the support of the Heritage fund [...] This photo, taken in 1862, was sold between 1862 and 1871, as evidenced by the photographer's address on the back of the board. Only two of Baudelaire's poses seem to have been retained from this session. "If photography is allowed to replace art in some of its functions, it will soon have replaced or corrupted it altogether, thanks to the natural alliance it will find with the multitude of nonsense" wrote Charles Baudelaire in the Salon de 1859. We know of only fifteen different photographic portraits of Baudelaire, taken between 1855 and 1866 (three sessions at Nadar, three at Carjat and one at Neyt), for some of which there remains only one copy. Baudelaire and Nadar met in 1843 and their friendship endured until the poet's death in 1867. The photographer shot a total of seven portraits of his friend between 1855 and 1862. The two men, full of admiration for one another, paid each other moving tributes in their respective works: Baudelaire dedicated "Le rêve d'un curieux" "The dream of a curious man" (in Les Fleurs du Mal) to the photographer, who dedicated to him, in addition to the photographic caricatures and portraits, an unvarnished work titled Charles Baudelaire intime: le poète vierge (1911). Extremely rare and beautiful copy of this little-known photograph of Baudelaire by the most important French photographer of the 19th century.
Berlin: Globus Verlag n.y. Hardcover. Wide small 4to. First title beige cloth with large detailed front board pictorial stamping in black grey and gold; second title grey cloth spine and pictorial paper over boards. Ca. 75pp; 58pp. Extensive full-page photographs captioned entirely in German. Very good. Boards a bit edgeworn with tail of spine rough; endpapers age toned and a bit worn as usual; couple of centerfold images edgeworn with discreet archival tear mends. Tight decent first editions of this pair of slim oversize photographic studies undated but circa 1900. A delightful study of turn-of-the-century Berlin chock full of huge detailed images one colorized -- its sights buildings public spaces etc. The front board pictorial stamping depicting a busy city scene with river and pedestrian-laden bridge in foreground is quite striking. Second title front board likewise striking but in a very different way showing a statue-topped column crests decorative floral and foliage elements etc. Respectable pair of these uncommon volumes usually found in poor condition. (BLANCHOT Maurice)
» Maurice Blanchot, L'Espace littéraire) Provenance: Archives familiales. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]

- Original photograph of Maurice Blanchot seated at his desk, before his library Original photograph of Maurice Blanchot, smiling, at his desk before his library. Contemporary silver print. "Blanchot eluded the photographers and caricaturists of the literary press for a long time. Attempts at producing an image were both rare and minimalist throughout the years. In 1962, in Express, a hand holds up a book at the bottom of the page; in 1979, in Libération, a blank square in the middle of the page captioned only with Blanchot's name and a quotation from l'Entretien infini ("a vacuum of a universe: nothing that is visible, nothing that is invisible")" (C. Bident, Maurice Blanchot). In 1986, at an exhibition of writers' portraits, he asked that his photo be replaced with a text noting his desire to "appear as little as possible, not for the exaltation of [his] books, but to avoid the presence of an author who pretends to a separate existence." A photo taken without his knowledge in the parking lot of a supermarket was the only portrait of the writer until his friend Emmanuel Lévinas made public a few rare photos from their youth. That Blanchot did not oppose this act, and the fact that it was done by his closest friend, can be explained by what Bident calls "l'espacement de l'inquiétude [the distancing of worry]", the outdated nature of the portraits made public carry an echo of the delayed publication of L'Idylle, Le Dernier Mot, L'Arrêt de mort...). Only a few photographs gathered in the centre pages of the issue of les Cahiers de l'Herne dedicated Maurice Blanchot complement these unique shots of the most secretive writer of the 20 th century. In his chapter on "L'indisposition du secret [The indisposition of the secret]", Christophe Bident devotes several pages to the almost complete absence of images of this invisible partner, wondering about the intellectual and psychological motivations of the writer, who was nonetheless aware of the inevitable revelation to come. "Everything must become public. The secret must be broken. The obscure must enter into the day and make itself clear. That which cannot be said must nonetheless make itself heard. (Brady, Mathew). Ehninger, John W
ILLUSTRATIONS OF LONGFELLOW'S COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH. PHOTOGRAPHED FROM THE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY BRADY.
N Y N Y: Rudd & Carleton. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong 4to 11" - 13; BRADY MATHEW. EHNINGER JOHN W. Illustrations of Longfellow's Courtship of Miles Standish. Photographed from the Original Drawings by Brady. First Edition with these illustrations. Original blood-red tooled morocco with gilt lettering at upper cover a. E. G. text with eight mounted albumen prints of drawings by Ehninger all approximately 5 1/4 X 7 1/2" on rectos of plain sheets. Binding strong darkened at spine and edges with old wear recently treated text strong with hinges repaired light marginal dampstain to all leaves but contents clean of foxing prints in nice condition with good tones; with contemporary engraved bookplate at front pastedown of Erastus Corning 1794-1872 founder of the New York Central Railroad . Van Haaften 33. A volume frequently overlooked in the history of the photographically illustrated book. This was the first American use of original photographs of illustrations for a literary work. Heretofore only through various mechanical printing processes could an artist's illustrations be reproduced faithfully primarily etchings and lithographs with almost all original illustrations on paper copied by others onto plates for engravings. Unpaginated aprox 40 leaves. Photographic reproductions of paintings had been included in a number of books but photographs of drawings specific to a particular literary work had not been previously attempted; the hope was a level of reproduction never before achieved. The process was expensive engravings were far cheaper than hand-mounting photographic prints the public yawned and the concept became an idea before its time to be resuscitated several decades later when the technique of photoengraving was perfected enabling publishers to put photographic reproductions of drawings directly onto printing plates. A. E. G. . Rudd & Carleton hardcover
