‎Original Photo Album of a New Orleans Woman ca. 1960-65‎

‎New Orleans 1963. Very Good -. New Orleans: ca. 1960-1965. Large oblong quarto 27x41cm.; brown gilt-tooled leatherette bound with leather strap; 47ll. to which are mounted 311 photographic snapshots nearly all black and white and measuring 8.5x8.5cm. Album a bit scuffed at extremities joints significantly cracked from use and poor quality of leatherette leaves a bit thumbed along fore-edge margins a number of photographs apparently removed though otherwise Good to Very Good contents that remain mostly in fine condition.<br /> <br /> Extensive though sadly uncaptioned personal photo album of a young white woman in New Orleans in the early to mid-1960s documenting her social family and work life date based on shots time-stamped 1963 and 1964. What we have gathered from the contents the compiler worked at least briefly as a server at a diner whose staff was mixed-race though still separated by position: the servers all appear to be white while the grill cooks and kitchen staff are Black. <br /> <br /> Of special note are the compiler's frequent trips to the Pontchartrain Beach amusement park in New Orleans a popular destination in the 1960s though the park was sold and its rides disbursed in the 1980s due to declining attendance. This album however beautifully captures its heyday including shots of the rides carnival games swimming pool tiki bar and a perennial favorite an oversized head inside of which our compiler loved to pose. <br /> <br /> The compiler as well as being a dog-lover was evidently a serious party-goer and additional snapshot vignettes capture various couples making out at a New Year's party or dressed up for Halloween. <br /> <br /> An excellent record of white New Orleans working class life marking the advent of the Swinging Sixties. unknown‎

Light green marbled boards backed with a tan cloth spine titled in brown on the spine. The edges of the slightly warped covers are rubbed. Illustrated with 57 superb full-page and double-page photographs reproduced on 60 pages. There is minor rippling to the pages possibly from humidity. Very good. <p>First edition limited to 5000 copies with text in Czechoslovak Russian and English.<p>RARE.<p>The brief English introduction to this book of stunning photographs consists mainly of a short biography of the photographer. It reads: "Karel Ludwig 1919-1977 today one of the best known Czechoslovak photographers became acquainted with the camera only by accident in 1939. Without any professional training he started to make publicity photographs for a periodical at Zlin. In 1940 he published his first picture in a Prague magazine and became a popular contributor to all leading magasines in the following two years. The pictures included in this first collection are mostly from this period. Karel Ludwig after an interruption commencing in 1942 resumed his activity in 1946 by preparing further publications." It is not surprising that many of Karel Ludwig's photographs have a theatrical and sometimes cinematic flair since from 1943 through 1948 he headed the photography department of the Lucernafilm Studios in Prague and was involved with cinematography magazines.<p>VERY SCARCE. ‎<p><strong>LUMIÈRE BROTHERS – COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY</strong>Archive of 19 letters sent to the Lumière brothers and one offprint of their paper on colour photography. </p><p><strong>An exceptional set of 19 letters expressing the enthusiasm of the scientific community and photographic societies following the production of the first colour photographic prints by the Lumière brothers more than ten years before their invention of the autochrome 1903-1904.</strong></p><p>Louis Lumière achieved this exceptional result by improving Gabriel Lippmann's process which was based on "an interference method that enabled him to record the solar spectrum in its natural colours". Alphonse Berget one of Lippmann's students published a report on his discovery in 1891.</p><p>" Louis Lumière at the head of a flourishing photographic products company mastered every aspect from formulation to the industrial production of plates that could be used to make interferential colour photographs. As soon as Lippmann's invention was announced a correspondence was established between Gabriel Lippmann and Louis Lumière and after a year of fine-tuning Louis Lumière presented the Académie des Sciences with some surprising "Lippmannian" views : flowers oranges landscapes stained-glass windows a naturalised parrot flags etc. A plate depicting the solar spectrum was presented to the Société française de photographie. Any object with shimmering colours could be recorded on a plate as long as it was still : the exposure time could be counted in hours ! . They were reduced to thirty minutes and then to a few minutes and the first portrait of a young girl in "natural colours" was taken in the summer of 1893. Entre art et science les prémices de la photographie couleurs au XIXe siècle</em> Nov. 2015 Paris France.</p><p>Post-1894 letters underline the Lumière brothers' efforts to promote their process. </p><p>The printed pamphlet is the Lumière brothers' last publication on their trichromatic method superposition of three monochromes - red yellow and blue before their discovery of the autochrome. It begins with a theoretical study of this method followed by a practical study of the process.</p><p>Provenance: Dr Paul Génard a great collector of early films and projection devices and leading authority on the Lumière brothers.
