Large Format Photograph of a Woman and Four Children in American Indian Dress
n. p. n. d. circa 1920. Good. 7" x 10" b&w photograph mounted on 12" x 14" board. Wear and light spotting/soil to board; loss to board corners; hint of spotting to photo edges. A curious photograph depicting what appears to be a white woman sitting in a semicircle on the grass with four boys of different races African American and possibly American Indian all wearing headbands and traditional American Indian-style dress. There are no clues as to why this gathering has taken place or even if these are in fact American Indians or merely a group costumed as such. My hunch is the latter and that perhaps this is a teacher with four students but I will leave the reader to decide. unknown

N.p. 1900. About very good. Two silver gelatin photographs each 4.25 x 6.5 inches on mounts measuring 8 x 9.75 inches. Moderate foxing to mounts some surface wear spotting and silvering to images. A wonderful pair of original photographs capturing two different groups of Native Americans in traditional dress. The first image features nine Native Americans including men women and one young girl. The second captures seven men and women. All of the subjects in each picture stare directly into the camera. The images are not captioned in the negative by the photographer but the subjects are clearly Plains Indians or perhaps from the southwest given their attire. The images offer an excellent opportunity for further research to identify the subjects and their tribal affiliation. The two photographs do have the feel of picturing members of the same tribe. unknown

Gallup N.M.: P. Clinton Bortell 1913. About very good. Panoramic photograph approximately 10 x 48.25 inches. Minor dust soiling and patches of light staining. Two short closed tears at lower edge not affecting image. An attractive panoramic image of the town of Tucumcari in eastern New Mexico taken by professional photographer Pearl Clinton Bortell in 1913. Bortell operated a studio in Gallup on the other side of the state during the 1910s and was mostly known for his photographic postcards of regional Native Americans their villages and activities. This view looks southeast with a large nest of railroad lines in the foreground and Tucumcari Mountain in the background with the scattered buildings and unpaved roads of the small town occupying the midrange. Tucumcari was established as a Rock Island Railroad construction camp known as "Ragtown" in 1901 and only became a permanent settlement with its current moniker in 1908. The town quickly became an important railroad junction and transfer point for Rock Island Railroad and Southern Pacific trains to Los Angeles from which it derived all of its modest prosperity. A good wide-angle image of this formerly significant transit hub in an otherwise rather desolate area of the country. P. Clinton Bortell unknown

A curated group of images of New Orleans subjects with an emphasis on women children and religious imagery including one uncommon image of a rosary and another of the interior of a church. Most photographs document the city’s wealthy residents at a time when elite culture changed due to the abolition of French instruction in schools and the general forces of reconstruction. 1882. Very good condition. A photographic album page with images of 'A Naval Sham Fight in Sydney Harbor' on April 16th 1881 with many horse drawn buggies and people observing. Trove locates a similar image of the Naval Sham Fight in Sydney at the State Library NSW call number SPF/1013. Obviously by the same photographer this is the next snap in a series this one includes the other ships taking part in the engagement. Below are images of 'Native Cats" and a "Native Bear". <br /> <br /> On verso a photo of a painting of the Sydney International Exhibition Building with an albumen photo below of the same entitled Exhibition Hall "After its destruction by fire" showing partial walls and much debris. The Hall burned in 1882.<br /> <br /> Images laid down on stock 9 1/4 x 11 3/4" images are 8 x 6" 8 x 4.5" 7.5 x 5 1/4". Smaller are 3 3/4 x 3". New York 1880. Very good condition. Photograph of the famed New York mansion which became George Washington's headquarters in Manhattan in the fall of 1776 and from which he won his first victory of the war the Battle of Harlem Heights. <br /> <br /> Accompanied by a lithographic portrait of the wife of the second owner of the house the shrewd socialite and real estate owner Eliza Jumel 1775 - 1865 who later married Aaron Burr. This connection to Alexander Hamilton led Lin-Manuel Miranda the composer of the Broadway musical 'Hamilton' to find inspiration in Aaron Burr's bedroom at the mansion writing some of the music there.<br /> <br /> Eliza and her wealthy wine merchant first husband Stephen Jumel purchased the Morris mansion in 1810. After Jumel died Madam Jumel married the 77 year old former Vice President Aaron Burr who famously killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel at Weehawken NJ. The Jumel-Burr marriage lasted a very short time with Madam Jumel filing for divorce on the grounds that Burr was after her money and hiring Alexander Hamilton's son as her divorce attorney!<br /> <br /> The lithographic portrait is titled "Madam Jumel" oval measuring 6 x 8" on thick paper 9 1/2 x 12". ca. 1860 The albumen photograph of the mansion titled in white at the bottom edge of the photo "80. Archive of 100 Photographs from New York Photographer Henry Reister advertising Remington Typewriters the New York Telephone Directory Other Various Products and depicting the People and Architecture of the New York Region c. 1915-1930
New York and Environs 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times from the Bronx to Bridgewater New Jersey then to Woodlawn New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots product photography events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York’s upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister’s architectural work which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays.<br /> <br /> Contents as follows:<br /> <br /> Seven images advertising typewriters with five showing a young woman posed with a Remington typewriter; five images of the New York Telephone Directory; five images of brightly lit grocery store interiors most focusing on elaborate lighting on a dairy display; two images of automobiles one showing a man in fine dress posed alongside an automobile the other showing a close-up of a license plate; thirteen varied product images including proto-modernist images of radiators an image of the Cory Smoke Telegraph Indicator three floral still lives and an opulently presented bowl of ice cream; forty-six architectural photographs including a rather stark series of institutional interiors including lavatories extravagant gardens the interiors of a bank on Broadway and high end domestic interiors; six photographs of the Yorkville Social Center Baby Parade of 1916; seven portraits including one of a worker holding two bolts several military portraits and an outdoor portrait of a couple in a garden; Eight scenes from Reister’s personal life most relating to an automobile trip made with his wife in 1930.<br /> <br /> Overall a strong representation of pre-Depression New York with many iconic aspects of the city and its environs represented. Despite his low profile Reister was a proficient professional photographer and the images remain quite attractive and in generally very good to fine condition with a few showing small tears at edges. unknown

Image is of a carved Maori meeting house with a large group of indigenous people Maori men women and children dressed in western attire posed in front of the building's ornately decorated facade. Amongst the group all dressed in their Sunday best clothing is a European dressed in a dark suit with the words "Merry Christmas" above him.<br /> <br /> A wharenui big house is the communal meeting house of the Maori people of New Zealand. The houses are often elaborately carved inside and out with stylized images of the tribe's ancestors in the tribe's unique patterns. This meeting house was newly constructed with a large glass window next to the door.<br /> <br /> 6 x 4" laid down on card stock. The Christmas greeting captioned in white. Insieme in ottime condizioni di conservazione (da segnalare solo tracce di ruggine alla pinzatura di alcuni fascicoli), completo di un rarissimo messaggio dattiloscritto circolare su carta intestata della rivista, che annuncia l’uscita dei due fascicoli complementari a chiusura dell’annata. L’ultima annata della rivista «Note fotografiche», l’“house organ” di AGFA Foto diretto da Alfredo Ornano e stampato a Milano presso la tipografia Lucini anziché Rizzoli dall’8 luglio 1941 al febbraio 1943, è probabilmente la prima esperienza di Albe Steiner come art director. Steiner illustra regolarmente con fotomontaggi pubblicitari la seconda e la quarta di copertina. Sospesa con il numero 10 dell'aprile 1942 «per disposizioni ministeriali», pubblicò nel febbraio 1943 due fascicoli monografici fuori numerazione per completare l’annata: «Fotografare» e «Pose istantanee», al fine di rispettare l’impegno preso con gli abbonati. Copertine fotografiche di W. Benser, Franco Grignani, Giovanni Scheiwiller e altri, stampa a cura del tipografo Lucini. Verso is stamped "Bremer & Judge Associates Rembrandt Studios Pittsburgh Pennsylvania." Dated and identified in the upper left corner: Blaw Knox Steel Yard 1949. Sam White John Boyd Norrie Freudenrich Bob Miller. Mounted photograph of string band musicians with weary hosts at a private event Bar Mitzvah <br />
None. Good. Photograph mounted to board with roughly cut edges 7.75 x 9.75 inches likely ca. 1900-1920. An unusual image of an event that's difficult to place. At one end a young boy looking a big haughty with his cigar bottle and chains. At the other end a man who looks exhausted and maybe a little past tipsy presumably his father. Both men appear to be wearing yarmulkes suggesting along with the party boy that it may be a Bar Mitzvah. The musicians also appear a little tired especially the two in the back whose arms sag as they try to hold the pose. A subdued but intriguing collective portrait. <br/><br/> unknown

<p>none. Good. A little over 6.5 x 9 inches mounted on 9 x 12 board. Board Fair with large chips and tears around the edges but photograph fortunately undisturbed and in Very Good condition independent of the mount. A quarrelsome-looking bunch armed with three saws a spokeshave planer and variety of hats among them. Several fixed slightly to the left. With a well-defined offset portrait on the verso but no identifying marks. <br /><br /></p>

Occupational portrait of sixteen men with "Little Minister" caps
<p>Photograph 5 x 7 inches mounted on 7 x 9 embossed card. In Good condition heavily soiled and worn around the board edges small half-inch loss at the upper left corner of the photograph. No markings on verso. The men are possibly furnace workers several with towels around their necks and all six in the bottom row holding twin pipes. Each man wears a hat two of which are visibly branded "Little Minister" utilizing the front panel as a billboard. B. F. Goodrich held a trademark for "Little Minister" recorded in the Pearson 1916 <em>Rubber Trade Directory </em>p.412. The product was a small toy one of very few manufactured by the Akron company better known for tires and sporting equipment. The hat may have been part of a promotion for the company—or perhaps it was related to the 1934 film adaptation of J. M. Barrie's starring Katharine Hepburn Whatever the context they're unusually early examples of the iconic American baseball cap used for advertising--a practice more associated with the rise of "trucker hats" in the 1970s.</p>
